Short Shrift for a Marylaad Xiscreant BALTIMOBB, NOT. 28.—A report has reached bere that George Briscoe, colored, was lynched Wednesday night at Newbridge, la Anne Arandel county, this state. He was charged with robbery, and when delivered to the con* stable to be taken to jail at Annapolis a orowd waylaid the constable and took Briseoe and hung him. He had previously been warned to leave the county because of frequent robberies in the neighborhood.

ANNAPOLIS, Nov. 28.—The Coroner's jury rendered a verdict of death caused by strangulation at the hands of parties unknown. The place of lynching was on the public road abont fifteen miles from Annapolis time between 7 and 8 o'clock. When Briseoe was seised he was in charge ot Deputy Sheriff Groton, Boone and Tip Wells, who bad been summoned to aid the deputy. A double barrelled pun was put in Boone's face and Tip Weils was pulled from the buggy and hurt severely. The lynchers numbered eighteen and were masked. A lady in the Third district, who was enciente and was fired at by Briscoe during one of his robberies, is a lunatic now from the assault. Briscoe was a convict from the penitentiary, where he had been Bent for housebreaking. When he was in jail here during the spring burglaries in the neighborhood ceased when he returned they began again. Public sentiment generally approves the act. Shot a Skunk.

SYRACUSE, N. Y.,Nov. 28.—Last evening N orris Eaton, a farmer near the town of Manlius, who bad been annoyed by skunks stealing his fowls, shot at a black spot in a straw stack and killed an unknown man hiding there.

Released From Custody.

LOUISYILLB, NOV. 28.—Robert MoPhun, alias Bruce, charged with extensive forgeries in Calcutta, was released from custody to-day. Judge Barr, of the United States Circuit Court, decided that the evidence, which was by affidavits of parties in Calcutta, was not adequate, and accordingly Bruce was freed.

BANK FAILURE.

A National Baak at Mi ddletowa, R. Y. KIODLKIOVI, N. Y., NOV. 28.—The Middletown National bank has failed. Its doors closed this morning. The failure was caused by President Thomas King, who accepted large draft* frosa Benjamin D. Brown, a grain dealer of Indianapolis and Burlington, Iowa, without security. Brown hae made an assignment. The capital of the bank is $200,000 the surplus $115,000. The extent of the loss is not yet known definitely. Depositois will lose nothing* President takes all the blame on himself. Hia recent advances were ncade without the knowledge of the other ofllcers acd directore. The bauk examiner Is on his way from Washington. There was a alight run on the savings bank here, but the latter is ia no way involved and will stand the run easily.

T. Goodwin, of the firm of Charles P. Goodwin & Co, cracker manufacturers, of New York, left his house about two this morning in a distracted state of mind, uttering horrible outcri ss. He was pursued unsuccessfully by his wife and neighbors. His mangled body was founi this morning near the*railroad track with his headj and right arm cut off, and the heart and entrails torn out. Goodwin was 62 years old. He leaves a widow nd five children. The recent failure of his firm is supposed to have affected hiss mind.

Father and Son in Congress. Washington Special: Mr. Charles S. Yoorhees has telegraphed to^his lather, Senator Yoorhees, that he was elected as congressional delegate from Washington Territory from 1 to 2 hundred majority. Mr. Yoorhees was the Democratic candidate, and the result of the election has been in dispute. Senator Yoorhees is naturally very much gratified at the succes of his son, who has, after a residence of only three years, overcome a Republican majority of about three thousand.

Small Pox.

BELLEVILL.*, ONT., NOV. 28.—News from the smafl-pox infected distriot in North Hastings is of a very encouraging character. Only two fresh cases were reported and those unrter trearment are rapidly recovering. The spread of the disease is believed to be checked, and the danger of fatal results is past.

Miners Meeting.

PITTSBURG, NoV. 28.—The convention of coal miners re-assembled this morn ing. The question of maintaining the distriot price of three cents per bushel was discussed during the entire morn ing. The competition which natural gas is now forming was considered in all its bearings and it was resolved to have the facts prepared for submission to the trades tribunal at its next meet ing. A committee was also appointsd to wait upon the miners employed ai the Plum Creek and Sandy Creek mines to induce them to strike for three cents. They are now receiving two-and-a-half cents per bushel.

DeCatar H. Miller, Capt. Clark, which sailed from this port yesterday afternoon for Boston, was sunk one-half mile from the mouth of lower Craighill channel by a collision with the steamship William Lawrence, Capt. Hooper. Both vessels belong to the Merchants and Miners Transportation Company. The Lawrence was bound from Savannah,

.CHICAGO, Nov, 28.—It is understood a partial compromise has been effected by which the Board of trade will continue to furnish the Western Union Telegraph Co., with its market reports and theywill be sent to all correspondents of the Western Union Co., pending an effort to set aside certain injunctions now in force against the telegraph company which prevent it from cutting off quotations from "bucket shops."
