WONDERS OFTHB TELEPHONE. Nothing can be more wonderful than the telephone itself. Any adjuncts to which time and the ingenuity of inventors may giro to the pablic can not equal the primal marvel of the telephone itself Nevertheless some ef the expansions ot its powers are likely to result in a* greaincreaee of its capacity and usefulneset One of theeeflate improvements is des cribed in atjarticie in the New York Sun which is appended:

1.

"Negotiations touching the trial in the Rev, T. De Witt Talmage's Tabernacle of Mr. Frank C. Mason's recent telephonic invention have been completed, and the work of perfecting the details of the experiment will be poshed on this week, is expected that on Sunday next th( apparatus will be connected for the test. A wire will be connected wiih the Brooklyn Central Telephone Office, and from that point Talmage's discourse will be served hot from the speaker's mouth to numbers of people in Brooklyn and New Yo»k.

Mr. Mason is the superintendent of the Brooklyn police telegraph. He has been studying his invention tor some time, and making experiments at his home which have been very satisfactory. It is not a new transmitter he has made, but an adjus tor to the common transmitter now in general use. The trouble with the common transmitter has been that it could not be kept long in a delicate adjust-

Whi

would take up a few words and then become disarranged from the concussions of the sound waves. This caused it to buzz and rattle, making conversation im* possible, Mr. Mason has invented an appliance which not only makes it possible to adjust the platinum point more delicately toward the carbon button, but when thus adjusted is held firmly and securely. He has thrown transmitters that he had so adjusted roughly about and found them unimpaired. "There is no pnlpit in the Tabernacle," be said, "so I snail be obliged to put the transmitter on the organ back of the speaker. Whether the jarring ot the heavy brass notes will throw it out ot adjustment is something I am interested in testing. It does not make the least difference whether the speaker talks at the instrument or away from it. If it holds its adjustment it will take up the sounds I have regarded the invention n.ore as a plaything than anything else, and have taken no steps toward having it patented I ehonld prefer not to go into the details of its mechanism, however, as what shall do with it in the future depends up on how more extensive experiments turn out. If it succeeds in Dr. Talmage's church it will be kept there permanently, and I suppose there will be nothing to prevent subscribers to the telephone service having Or. Talmage's sermons on tap, juBt as they do their water and gas. There are several private lines from churches to houses, although I don't know of any general experiment such as the one we are contemplating. Mr. Beach of the Scientific American, built, and he still maintains, a line at his own expense from his residence in Forty-second street,* New York, to Henry Ward Beecher's church. The transmitter used is the common kind, but it is placed under the pulpit, and the speaker talks more or less directly into it. I understand that it works very sat isfactorily. Two invalid ladies living in First place here in Brooklyn have a line running from their house to Dr. Ludlow's Westminster Church in Clinton street and Second place. It works well I am told, the transmitter being, as in the case of Mr. Beach's line, directly in front of the speaker. "I have the utmost confidence in longdistance telephone circuits, and have no doubt that we might as well talk with Boston aB with Harlem. The trouble is that companies will not go to the extra expense which the putting up of the right kind of wire demands. The wire should have a steel core to give it toughness, and over the steel should be a copper covering to serve as a conductor. This is, of course, expensive. I have talked with perfect ease from New York to Cleveland, Ohio.

TUB total Democratic pluralities for Congress are 19,144, and the total Republican pluralities 8,977, leaving a net Democratic plurality on Congress of 10,847. A study ot the figures will show some of the beauties ot the Democratic gerrymander, against which the Republican party has to contend both in congressional and legislative contests.—[Indianapolis Journal.

The facts do not Dear out the Insinuations of unfairness made by the Journal. Eight Democratic congressmen have pluralities of 19,944, or an average plurality of 9,418. Vive Republican congressmen have a plurality of 8,977, or an average of 1,795. So it will be seen the present districting of the state is so very decidedly in favor of the Bepnblicans if their congressional pluralities equaled that of the Democrats they would only have three and not five congressmen Under the old Republican gerrymander of the state the Republican majorities average less than a thousand and in the two or three Democratic districts the majority were many thousands. Study the figures, everybody, and iearn that the present districting of the state, dene by Democrats, is so fair that it gives considerable advantage to the Republicans.

ACCORDINC to the Philadelphia News, St. John could have been bought off the track by paying him $10,000. This is a gratuitous and malicious falsehood. Nominated by a national convention, it was clearly St. John's duty as an honest and honorable man to continue as a candidate, and he would have betrayed those who trusted and honored him if for a money or any other consideration he had left the field. No one diflers from St. Jobn's notion ot propogating temperance by prohibitory legislative enactments than does the GASBTTB, but it is only the commonest decency to say that there is nothing in the character or career of the man which goes to show that his morals have been corrupted by the mildew of dishonesty which has blighted the other- ^nightmare."

wise lustrous fame of James O. Blaine. He had the same right to ran as the candidate of people who hold the same views as he does on prohibition as Blaine had to run as the exemplar of some other views, and in personal character St John is the better man of the two.

THE COLORED PEOPLE .| On the question ot the ^colored people and the incoming Democratic administration let there be a clear and distinct understanding at the outset. All sorts of wild and reckless assertions have been and are being made. The GAZETTE may be taken as a fair and reasonably accurate exponent of the views ot the Democratic party in this vicinity. Certainly without it the party would be in a deplorable condition. Well then, let it be understood, once for all, that this paper believes absolutely, without reservation and so aggressively that it would change its politios instantly to suit the emergency, if the question were raised, in the perfect equal ity before the law of every individual without regard to rage, color, nationality or previous condition ef servitude. If the Democratic or any other party ever champions the doctrine that any nationality( race or color has special privileges before the law over any other, or that any class, order or condition of men has less rights, before the law th&n any other, that party is the especial aversion of this paper and no stone will be left unturned to compass its defeat. The GAZETTA believes instinctively, inherently, beyond all reserva tion and above all party fealty in the ab" solute equality before the law of all hu. monity. And it believes so strongly on that doctiHe that with it the matter trans, ceuds all other questions, *nd if that ub. ject should ever be made an issue, as it does not believe it ever will be, the ques tion being forever settled, it would drop all ether issues and make the contest on that point until no man dared dispute it The colored race does not ask and need not expect special privileges. What any other race has it has and shall continue to have, no leas, no more, and with this it ought to be and must be content. Let us have an end ef this idle and useless discussion and proceed to the disputed business of life, about which there is difference of opinion

JUDGING from the almost unanimous testimony of the female part of the Washing'on community Mrs. Blaine is as unpopular with her own sex as her husband is popular with his. In that ait of pleasing people by suave manners and a happy address, in which Blaine is strong, Mrs. Blaine is not only defective, but she has a "temper is inclined te snub and lout other women and to put on airs. Any probabilities of her being mistress at the White House were not very welcome to those who know her. She is edited with saying that when she got to the White House everybody could not call as they do now. The company would be moreseleet. Acd those who know her best believe that she would have undertaken to draw lines. They are not surprised at her behavior toward Boston ladies who, during the late campaien, invited her to a ladies' dinner at the Brunswick Hotel, where also the procession could be seen. She arrived at the appointed hour, but learning that she was not to have a private room—the houae being too full—for her own speeial accommodation, she immediately drove away without apologiiing or even sending word to the ladies. They sat down to their dinner without her, and ever after that ceased to take any interest in Blaine's election.

"TUB grand old party'* ot free speech still "goes marching on." A Baptist clergyman named Bellusmy, at Little Falls, New York, made St. John speeches during the campaign. Several Republican members have withdrawn from his churoh and he has been so fiequently and grocsly insulted in the streets that2he does not leave his house, except when he is obliged to. He will probably hare to leave town. "John Brown's body lies amouldering in his grave his soul is a go
