Newly Appointed Secretary of the Treasury. Hugh McCulloch, the newly-appointed Secretary of the Treasury, is a native of Maine, having been born in Kennebunk, that state, in 1810. He studied law in his early manhood, and, on being ad. mltted to tbe Bar, in 1838, removed to Fort Wayne, Indiana. After his arrival there be was tendered and accepted the position of Cashi of the State Bank of Indiana, which incident undoubtedly shaped a career which developed into one of distinguished financial siooeBs. He filled the position of Cashier and Director of the branch of the State Bank of Indiana until 1857. In that year he was elected President of the State Bank, in which position he cont nued until 1863 when President Lincoln appointed him Comptroller of the Currency. After thoroughly organizing and putting hi bureau into successful operation he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Lincoln, on tbe 7th of March, 1865, and held that office throughout President Johnson's administration, until succeeded by Secretary Boutwell. under President Grant, »rch 11, 1869. Mr. McCulloch then established in London the banking house of Jay Cooke,McCulloch & Co with which ne continued until the suspension of the American firm of Jay Cooke & Co., in 1873, when the London house reorganized under the name of McCulloch & Co. A year afterward he returned to the United States, and since then, although participating in several financial entei prises, he ha? not been engaged in active business. His winters hav? been spent in Washington, a during the rest of the year he has lived on his farm* about six miles north ol that city, in Maryland.

Although seventy-four years of age, Mr. McCulloch is still vigorous, and his friends believe, quite capable iu every way of resuming the duties of tbe nosiiion which he eo long held wh the finances of the country were in a condi tion by no means so satisfactory as they are now. He is a man of great knowledge, experience and ability, and bis ap-, pnintmest gives universal satisfactionThe office ol Secretary of the Treasury is worth a salary of $8,000 a year.
