NORMAL NOTES-
School was rather sliui Monday and Tuesday, so the ladies tell us, mat of the boys being out to cast their ballot. They have all returned except a few Republicans who were snowed under by a snow storm of Democratic report4. 0. B. Still was much amused in noticing the exceedingly long faces of the Republican boys attbe unexpected gains for Democracy. It was worth a complete defeat to see their "feathers fall" at the news. I shall be willing to give Blaine the Presidensv to see the Republicans pout once more, tie crape on the flags, give up all hope, and* look as if the world was comioc to au end, if Cleveland "got there. Eli!"
We hear that a party of Norraalites were out serenading. Among otbers they serenaded Pres. Brown. We also hear that there we:e other part es from the Normal, some of whom dm some mischief. O. B. Still was serenading too, but was out alone.
Friday morning Prest. Brown referred to an article in tue Nori h. American Re Tiew by E. E. Hole in which the author deplores tbe decline of tbe profession of ofteacbiug. The President wishes us to read and consider it,as we will be ao«ueed (f the same fauD.r viz. Lo*« of spontaneity and originality. Th.- President says there are three stages in mastering of any profession: 1. A stage of superficial knowledge and self-con ceitedness. 2. A stage in which be cuts tbrougb tbe superficial and looks into the subject 3-A stage of mastering tie principles underlying tbe subject.
These principles are those of mind and of the subjects themselves. The Philomathian society held its regular meeting last evening. The programme was interesting and instructive. The principal part of the programme was taken up with two debates which were we)l bandied by all engaged. Tbe question in the first debate was, Resolved that the profession is more desirable in every respect than that of teaching. Tbe second was, Resolved that tbe state has the right to fix the price of money.
The music of the evening was good and well rendered. The closing song was especially good as also a solo and AhortiB by a male quartett.

laid
NRW YOKE, Nov. 7.—1 a. in".—Tbe official vote of the oounties cut down Blaine's plui ality in the state. The official vote of 66 counties give pluralities for Blaine of 59,884 and for Cleveland of 69,407. An estimate on the lour counties not in give pluralities for Blaine of 9,819 and 487 for Cleveland, which would give Cleveland a net plurality in the state of 831.
Official rettfrtffr from Westchester county give a Democratic gain over the previous figures of 488. This makes Clevt land's plurality in the state 117.
Official cor.nty returns and very close figures on the twelve counties whioh have not been officially reported, indicate Cleveland's plurality reaches nearly 1,C00 in the state. The official returns show heavy Democratic gains.
NEW YORK, NOV.6.—1858 election dis tricts outside of New York and Brooklyn gives Blaine ,.403,621, Cleveland 845,028 Butler 10,839^ St. John 20,710, a net Democratic gain of 15,073.
WATKINS, N. Y., Nov. 6.—Schuyler Co. gives Blaine 2,616, Cleveland 2,039, Butler 113, and St. John 154.
BrvfiRHEAD, L. I., Nov. Cleveland* official majority in Suffolk Co. is 592. UTICA, N. Y., NOV. 6.—Oneida County official gives Cleveland 13,820, Blaine 13,792, St. Johr 897, Buttler 188, scattering 2.
NEW YORK, NOV. 7.—Tbe acting superintendent ot police to-day sent a mes sage to ail captains to prevent all parade* not having proper permits from the police, and to give an escort to those that had permits.
The Post says: The atiherlnt? ol Grover Cleveland may rest confident that this state has given him a plurality and that he has a larje majrrity in the electoral college.
SARATOGA, N. Y., Nov. 7.—Saratoga county's complete official returns give Blaine 8,190, Cleveland 5,846, Butler 92, St Johu 425.
SCHENECTADY, Nov. 7.—The official vote of Schenectady for electors is, Blaine 3,260, Cleveland 2,977, Butler 309, 8t. John 106. Blaine's majority has been incorrectly reported at 148.
NEW YORK, Nov. 7.—Tbe question of who has carried New York state is now chitfly a question of the accurate footings of long columns of figures. The footing of county clerks with only a few missing, indicate that Cleveland has about one thousand plurality. The footings of election districts made in the associated press office indicate that Biaine has nearly an equal plurality. Twelve districts in the stats had not up to this morning reported at all. Some 60 others bad reported, but their accuracy was questioned and tbey will be veretied t?-day. The whole list of counties will be carefully readded to-day, and tbe result of that addition as well as th° result ot the compilation of county clerks figures will be sent out by associated press.
Firing Guns.
NEW YORK, NOV. 7.—'This okoming a salute of 100 guns was fired in City Hall Park by order of the leader of the county Democracy in honor of Grover Cleveland's eleotion to the Presidency. The booming of guns drew a large crowd from the bulletin boards at the newspaper offices to the park. During the tiring a portion of a rock from a gun struck a little newsboy named Jacob Simon in tbe face, knocking out his eye. The Herald, Sun and Extra have withdrawn their bulletin boards. At the World bulletin board this morning tbe crowd was quite enthusiastic over the announced election of Cle\ eland and Hendricks, and this was increased when it was declared that Jay tioald had conceded the state to Cleveland. The Republicans continue firm, however, and still maintain that Blaine has carried the state.
Back Counties.
NKW YORK, Nov. 7.—11:45 a. m.—Ten districts not heretofore reported at all have just reached the Associated Press office, some of them coming from mountain regions by mail. These foot up as follows: Blaine 064. Cleveland 217 a not Republican plurality in these districts of 447.
They Die Hard.
NEW YORK, Nov. 7.—The Mail and Express sayR: Neither party yields New York state. The contest is so close that official figures i»ay be neces« sary to determine tbe result. Returns so iar arrived indicate an apparent plurality for Blaine.
CHEERING CLEVELAND.
His Friends Taking Him by Storm. ALBANY, N.Y NOV. 7.—Congratula. tory dispatches have poured in npou Gov Cleveland ..11 the murmng. They come from evary stale in tb© Union, and already several thousand have been received. Among the telegram? was one from Jay Gould congratulating Cleveland on his election. There was a constant jam of visitors in aqd out of the executive mansion all the morniog. Many ladies were among the callers. The Governor bore his honors modestly.
The excitement in this city has largely subsided, tbe Republicans generally conceding Cleveland's election. Many business and private houses are decorated and the enthusiasm among Democrats is subdued but intense. The acksoniane, one of the leading crmpaigu slubs, will serenade President elect Cleveland at the executive mansion this evening. On Monday night next a monster celebration will be held in which all the campaign clubs of Albany and the county will participate.
Catarrh is a constitutional disease. Hood's Sarsaparilla is a constitutional remedy. It oures catarrh. Give it a trial.
NOT one single question of them any settled and settled right by the war shall be disturbed by a Democratic congress and a Democratic President. The colored race need have no fear. They will be protected in all their rights as freemen and the equals of any before the land. No rebel debts will be paid or rebel sol. diers be pensioned. The dead past is buried as well as dead. That surplus in the treasury will be theie no longer. It will be paid on the national debt and the heavy war taxes which produce a surplus will be reduced. U. S. deputy marshallsatthe polls have served their nefarious purpose of fraud and strife and bloodshed for the last time. Our foreign policy will not be brilliant bnt it will be safe and sound and patriotic. We shall not march around among the nations with a chip on our shoulders seeking a qusrrei, but it will not be safe for England or any other countiy to arrest Dan. iel MoSweeney or any other American of Irish, German or any other nationality! visiting his old home, without being made to undestand that his being an
American citizen means that he has rights whieh must be respected or there will b3 a row. We shall reduce rather than increase the regular army. Wc do not want a large navy, but the rhips we shall have we shall try to make batter than the unseaworthy old tubs which sink on the slightest provocation or with no provocation at all. We Bhall try to save from the wreek of our public lands the little left by the land grant railroads and rescue every acie hat tbey have forfeited and that can be secured by honest legislation.
POOR Blaine has warned tue Presidency so badly, has wanted it so long aud fought so valiantly for it, that now in the hour of hts defeat we find it in our heart to be sorry for him. He was and is a royal good fellow, but he has two fatal delects in his character for which this paper was and is sincerely sorry. It is a pity, an amazing pity lor a flaming, shiaing sun to have spots upon it. We very much doubt if he will survive the shock caused by his ambitious hopes and plans tumbling into cureless ruin about hi&.feet. He stands to-day in the ashes of bis ambition.
COL. R. B. F. PIERCE and Gen. J. R. Carnahan may have dangled their shapely limbs beneath the m&hogony at Senator Harrison's in company with James G. Blaine. They may have stood upon tbe marble steps of that senatorial mansion and reviewed the common crowd as it marched by with torcnes and transpcrencics, Thev* may have turned heaven war I the tips of the'r Grecian nose when they saw their toiling friend Nicho las Filbeck go shouting by. But death is the great levekr. Their erstwbilt. proud heads lie as low to div in the dust as doss thai of Mr. Filbert:.
WITH the other thrilling news of ibo day is a report of butttr found in a well and perfectly pure and swett, although fifty years old, and another of a woman from whose body "no less than fortyr seven pieces of needles, common brass pins, etc., were taken out. TLey were mostly laktn t'rom the woman's arms." After the lies of the campaign now over, he cautious news editor wants to let tbe country taper off on mendacity,

The People Go Wild Ovr the Election cf Cleveland a::d Hendricks. Democrats went ld in lndianapcl.s last night. Thiy appeared upon the streets in great
crowds,
their hats decorat
ed with roosters and other devices, carry, ing broome, and headed by a band, paraded the principal streets, raising a deafening din with hsu horns. They called upon Hendricks, filling the spacious yard and street in front ot his residence, and when he appeared the noine was simply terrific. Finally something like order was restored. Mr. Hendricks was about to open his moutb, when a young negro broke out wilh a wild speech, and explanation said: "When you make a convert you ought to allow him to shout." Mr. Hendricks then said:
Gentlemen, I am taken by surprise by this large collection of my fellow citizen?. I appreciate how well you have done and the honest sentiments which animate you. I have no satisfactory information, but I have no doubt that the ticket which waF nominated in Chicago July 8, has been elected. [Applause] Uut this is a matter of such grave importance that I would like to know very conclusivtly before I make any remarks. This has been the most extraordinary oontest I have ever been connected with. There has been the most profound sentiment among the people, and for thirteen weeks I have been a pari ot the interested mass ot my fellow citizens. I have done everything to promote this result. It you appreciate it I thank you. applause.] I suppose that by evening we sball have very full information, attd then I shall be very glad to join you in some expression of gratification. Until that time I think I will say good-bye to you.
Mr. Hendricks had a number of callers during the day and was in receipt of congratulatory messages from all over the country. At v*rious times during the day Mr. Hendricks reiterated his opinion that the Western Union Telegraph Company and Associated Press were conspir ingto damage him personally throughout the iuutry by falsely reporting that the state bad gone for Blaine and Lngan. The q'ueition of polv: amy in Utah was discussed. Mr. Hendricks declined to enter into a detail of his opinions, but intimated that the D9tnocraoy had very pronounced views, and would develop a strong policy in its treatment of this evii.
The system," he said, ''has become so deeply rooted that it trouble aiises I fear it will nut be disposed of without resoit to force." "If the presidential vote is very close,, will another electoral commission be tolerated, Mr. Hendricks?" "No, sir, and so long as I control th? matter this state will never again be disgraces by having one man controling the voice of deputy ma^hals, acting as a partisan police force. It was a d:sgr8C\ There was no disturbance in this sthte, ana no occasion for this secret counciling and threatening of tbe people's liberties.'
