LaPorte Argus-

The editor of The Argus in all that has been said concerning the Calkins school fund loan has been moderate and fair in his statements to the public. We have spoken from the records and care fully avoided exaggeration, and have constantly kept well within the lines of the most explicit truth, hut notwithstanding this temperate and honorable action, we have been accused from one end of the state to the other of lying and slandering the Republican candidate for Governor. All the time we have had within easy reach poaitive evidence in ^ajor Calkins own writing that he owed the school fund debt. Owing to the private nature of the evidence we determined, however, not to use it, unless Major Calkins personally denounced our statements as false and slanderous. This we are informed on the most un questioned authority, he is now doing from the atump in all parts of the state, and it is for this reason that we publish his own words to refute his denial that he owes the debt to the school fund. The reason the debt was not paid as requested in the letters, was because no purchaser could be found for the swamp at the priee orfMO. The folk wing is copy ot the letters:

OMMITTKB ON APPROPRIATIONS, 1 HOCSB OF BBPRMBNTATRATS, Washington, D. C.. Feb. 20,1884.) DEAR WILL:—

I appeal to you to fix up that school fund matter. No matter bow you do it, please fix it. You know I feel like I could not allow it to hang over me, as a handle will be made of It in tbe coming campaign, and if our positions were re versed I would aot promptly for yoti Don't ask me how, but fix it and write me what I will have to pay. I leave the whole matter to you.

Yours, W. H. CALKINS.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Washington, D. C., May 20,1884, DEAR WILL:—

Won't you plesse- fix up thst school land matter? I want it closed up before the convention. Pleaae do this for me. and write what I have to pay, and 1 will send you a cheok for it. Don't delay.

Your friend, W. H. CALKINS.

It will be seen that Major Calkins fully recognized six months *go that he alone owed the debt, and that he wanted it settled before the Republican convention met, and before the campaign opened. No further comment seems necessary, but we ask tbe reader to judge for himself who has lied, and who nas made slanderous statements. These letters will not be disputed for the origin ala can be produced at any minute.

..MILKED BY A SNAKE.

Why Farmer Yard's Cow Came ia with an Enpty Udder. TRENTON, N J., Oct. 9.—John Yard, a farmer living on the Brunswick pike, eieht miles from this city, has been pasturing a number ot cows on a lot on bis place for some time. Recently he noticed that one of the finest of them invariably came in in the morning as dry as though she haa been milkea. He was puzzledbat this, and, as an experiment, changed her to another pasture. She immediately began to give the usual amount of milk. After a few days she was returned to the old pasture with the other cows, and at once began to come in f, as before.

Finally Mr. Yard set a boy to wstch the cow.* The mystejy was then quickly solved. Tbe boy reported that early in the morning a large snake, "the biggest he had ever seen," came and breakfasted from the cow's udder, draining it completely dry. Tbe cow did not seem to mind the operation. These facts are vouched for by responsible persons who have seen the snske taking its morning meal.

A Thoughtful Little Girl.

MARSHALL, Oct. 10.—The residence of James Moore, a farmer living west of the city, was entered by a tramp and about $11 in silver taken. A bag of gold, $525 in all, was hidden behind a bureau, but was saved by a little girl who worked there, she being the only one at home at the time. She managed to avoid being seen by the burglar, and carefully slipped the gold from its hiding place and escaped to the house of a neighbor. There is no clew to the identity of tbe burglar.

A Curious Fled.

NEW HAVEN, Oct. 10.—In demolishing an old building on top of East Cook the workmen discovered several undergroud passages thirty or torty feet long, fifteen feet high and three feet wide, which led to a subterranean vault. Several counterfeit silver pieces and a broken die were found. Milton J. Stewart, tbe last occupant, disclaims any knowledge of the matter. The place had an unsavory reputation. Murde-s and various crimes had been committed there.

Masked Mea

JOHNSTOWN, PA., Oct. 10.—Five masked men flourishing revolvers battered down the doer of tbe house of farmer Joseph Gates, in White township, early yesterday morning and compelled Gates at the- point of pistols to give them over $1,100 which he bad secreted. The robbers then hastily departed firing theft revolvets as they emerged from the house. ^..

Beeeher Cliaekea the Stery sf Blalae'a Crsekedsess. The following letter has been given to the public: To General U. A. Alger, Republican

Candidate for Governor ot Michigan DEAR SIB—The publication of your telegram to James F. Joy, of Detroit, bnt now in London, and his reply compels me to publish the facts connected with my interview with him at his house on or about September 29,1877, in order to clear myself of the charge of bearing false witness ngainst him. I have stesdily refused to give to the public press the story ot that interview at his hospit ble board, his private house, but as the utterance of a public man about a pubi man, I had aright to mention it privately among my intimate friends. In what way the partial and imperfect story of that interview got into the newspapers I do not know. Certainly it wss not with my knowledge that yon were misled by these reports and that you telegraphed Joj in Locdoa:

Y.-F DETROIT, Sept 30,1884. To Joy (care Brown, Shepherd & Co., London):

Did Blaine offer to appoint a commit tee to suit you if you took Little Reek bonds off his hsnds? Henry Ward Beeeher ssys you told him Blaine did.

Henry Ward Beeeher said nothing of the kind, as yon will soon see.. It wss easy for Joy to reply:

TRTP. ITBRtcy. TTATTTR WEEKLY GAZETTE.

LONDON, Sept. 30,1884.

ToR. A. Alger, Detroit: Blaine never made me an offer to appoint a committee to suit me in any manner or form for any consideration of any kind whatever.

J. F. JOY.

Plesse send to him the following narrative and you may depend upon it Joy will not contradict its substsntisl accuracy, neither will any one ot the several gentlemen who were at the table with me, nor will the other witnesses deny tha»- the same substantial statements bsve been msde br Joy to others not unfrequently: Toward the closs of dinner, September 29, 1877, poiitioal matters wero introduced, among other things Blaine's failure to receive the nomina tion thst went to Hayes. Joy spoke with contemptuous severity of Blaiae, snd gsve this statement: When the difficulty occurred in regard to certain lsnds in the southwest in regard to certain lands in the southwest in which 1 was interested and the committee was about to be appointed by congress to examine the matter, Blaine being speaker of the house, through a friend I asked Blaine to have one sound lawyer appointed on that committee. I did not care of which •arty, 1 simply wanted a sound lswyer. a day or two Blaine sent me word through a iriend that he had certain depreciated bonds that if I would enable tiim to place them at par 'I could have my committee as 1 wanted it'" I cannot forget with what scorn Joy leaned back in his chair, and said: '•"ihat is the kind of a man Blaine is." And he added, "1 refused the offtr, and as the courts soon settled the matter no committee was appointed." At that time I knew nothing of the lands in question nor of the bonds alluded to, ut I did understand fully Joy's opinion ot Blaine. What changed Joy's notion and led him to nominate Blaine at tbe Chicago convention in 1880, I do not know but it can probably be found out by inquiring of the editors ot certa great daily newspapers who hardly found language bitter enough lor years to inveigh against Blaine, who now can not find language enough to pour contempt upon men Wao do nut approve of placing Blaine ia the presidential chair. I shall not prolong my 'etter by narrating Blaine's views of matters in an interview with me which took placetrfter my speech ai Cooper Union during the Garfield canvass, at his own request, in the Fifth Avenue hotel. 1 can hardly believe be has forgotten that. I can not but admit the indomitable pluck with which Blaine is deiendiog himself against such a cloud of charges as was never made against any other presidential candidate since tbe government began, yet I can nofe allow mysolf to be misled by sympathy. With his undoabted kindhearteduess, couragr, audacity, unsound in statesmanlike judgment, unscrupulous in political methods, dim-eyed iu perceiving the distinction between truth and Untruth, absorbingly ambitious, shortsighted as to tbe methods ot gratifying bis ambitioo, but with genial social disposition, brillianl rhetorical capacity, Blaine makes an alluring candidate, but would make a dangerous president. I pray you to excuse my adding to tbe oares of your canvass the consideration of these matters. It wa«, however, but jubt to you to point out how mit-leadiag was your telegram to Joy, and how iirelevaut to the subject matter was his reply.
