HOUSE BREAKING.
Tbe City Suffers Again From
Burglars Last Night.
Arrest by the Police of a man Named Frank Warren, Lately From £piiig£tl), 111*.
Last night the city again suffered from housebreakers, no lees than ten at* tempts, some'successful, being made to rob tbe residences of well-known citizens. Thfc developments of the last few nights have put the people an tbe verge of a burglar scare and it would be well for citizens to make use of every precaution, a* it is evident that the city is infested with a gang who have come here to systematically work the town. The depredations of lost night are as follows: ..

1 SURVEY FHK MELD.
Dan Fasig's residence, 30? south Third, was entered through the back way. Tne'burglar used a match and opened the rear door as soon as he got into tbe noustj and theu fastened it, so he would have a clear exit if interfered with. He didn't take Snythiug, and it is probable that his departure, from some reason, was sudden.
At Barney Greggs',428 south Third, in tbe block below Mr. Fasig's tbe burglar came about *2 o'clock. The hallway window was up and he.cut through the mosquito bar and then climbed in. He took a gold watch and chain and two silver dollars.
Robert Joyce's grocery, at the corner of Second and Vine, was broken into about the same *ime, or shortly afterwapd. The burglar tot into the barroom through a transom and had tbe temerity to strike one of the "go off" matches. Ur. Joyce woke up and noticed that tho burglar was careful ol not scorohing bis fingers. As soou as Mr. Burglar notieed that somebody was awake he skipped in aburrv.
At a house on the east side of Seoond, between Gookins and Moffatt, the ourfelar effected an entrance, awakened a girl, was plainly seen by her, and then eft.
An attempt was made to get into Hauseman's grocery, corner of Second and Moffatt, but it failed.
Mrs. Kendall's residence, 152V south Second, in the next square eouth, was entered, but nothing taken.
Kingtn*», 428 O'aborne, was also visited, but. no*hmg taken* Mr. Hartweli, of 1515 south Sixth, beard the visitor cutting his shutters. He stood inside and looked out at him, and had a good view of him. The burglar left the window he was working at and finally skipped.
The burglar took a watch from Attorney Bumsey's residence, 811 south Eighth. A girl living there saw him plainly.
ID addition to the above, Gounciiman Klug's residence in tbe Sixth ward was entered night bet^re last and $15 taken.
AN ARREST.
Or course the police were mad because the burglar or burglars didn't run into them somewhere during the night, and Chief Vandever was not in very good humor this morning at 7 30 a. m. Officer Eicbelberger arrested a young man, aged about 23, at the corner of Secpnd and Main. He came here several weeks ago with two fast women from Springfield, 111. The women were brought here by the keeper of a house of iii-fame and this fellow accompanied them here as a "friend."' Kotbing was found on his person to criminate him. He bad a letter, with mourning border, addressed to "Frank Warren. Terre Haute, Iod." That is tbe raniH be cives. The letter bore the Sprinuliel'J, Hi., postmark and was from two persons—Edward Houseman and Wallio E. Hopping. Tbe latter wrote on the letter after the former bas finished bis part. Houseman said: "Times is dede here" and Dopes they are better with Warren. The letter fipm the woman and the general tenor of both indicate that they were written at a bouse of prostitution in Springfield, kept by the woman Hopping.
IDENTIFIED.
The girl at W. W. Rum9ey's and Mr. Hartwell identified Warren as the man they had seen. Chief Vaudever says that froth the description given it must have been one man doinr it all. Warren is a small man. wears black clothes and had a black mustache. He is "up to snuff."
TO HIS GIRL.
Warren wrote the following note this morning to his girl. She is at "Jude" Allen's: "MINNIE—I «m put in jail. You go to Staub's livery stable and ask the boy Charley if I did not stay there last night. Bring me up some tobacoo.
F. WARREN.''
Chief Vandever said the people at Staub's declared* be was not there last night.
THE WATERMELON BOON.
Interesting to the Raisers of the Wabash Fruit. A few weeks ago watermelons were a drug in the market here. Four cents apiece, wholesale, was a good price and maoy allowed their mtlons to rot in the fields rather than accept it. Now, however, things are changed. Tbe melons at Owensburg and Soutbers Illinois are out and the town is full of 1 uyers from Lansing and Detroit, from Chicago, Ft. Wayne and her points and the whole-, sale price has gone up to 10c. The C. & B. I. is shipping large quantities t" all the points above named. Tbe freight on a car oi melons (about 9000 is the usual capacity, to Chicago is $20. Melons are graded in a special class of their own and pay about the sam» rates as grain.

There is nj denying that the sweet spirit of intolerance which brealbe3 in the above paragraph sounds very much like some of the editorials James G. Blaine used to write when he sat upon the tripod as editor-in-chief ot the Kenneoec Journal.
WHAT the Democratic party do&sn't know about forgery is not worth finding out.—[Indianapolis Journal. ,We have all along been of the oDinion that the forging o[ proxies by wLich one wing of tbe Republican party in Mew York gained control of tbe Republican State convention two-years ago atd nominated a ticket which- Cleveland beat nearly two hundred thousand votes was a neat stroke ot forgery and unparalleled in Democratic atfoals. But we yield to the superior judgment of the Journal touching political forgery and if, in view ot the disastrous consequences which ensued in that canvass, it does not want that forgery to count, why of course it should have its way. Far tie it from the GAZETTE to recal' reminiscences which are distressful to the tender susceptibilities of its esteemed Indianapolis contempo rary.
