Mrs. Belva A. Lockwood was nominated for President of tbe United States by tbe Women's National Rights Party in California. In tbe letter conveying the news of her nomination her correspondents say that she was selected for the Prisidenev because Elizabeth Cady Stanton was"tooold,"Sa*an b. Anlbocv •'too much of a spinster," Mary A. Livermore "too opposed to certain classes," and Lucy StoDe "too uarrow." This statement of why another person w&s not notcjnated marks a new departure in American politics. Practiced tberwise than with feminine tidt it would hardly conduce to harmony in tbe party. Mrs. Lockwood ptomptlv wrote her letter of acceptance. She says:» "I believe that with yt.ur unanimous and cordial support and tbe fairness and justice of our cause we shall not only be able to carry tne election, but to guide the ship of State safely into port." She pioutises if clected to try to promote equal priviletcis for all citizens, ami to seek to insure a lair distribution of the public offices to women as well as to men. She is opposed to the monopoly of the judiciary by male voters, and it elected will appoint a reasonable number ol women an District Attorneys, Marshals and Judgesof tbe United States. She advocates temperance, and believes woman suffrage will brinir about the abo ition of the liquo" traffic. Mrs. Lockwood also expresses her views on marrUge and divorce, tbe Indian policy, and other public questions. She savs of her leuei: "I have madn a bid for all voters, Irish, German, temperance, monopolists, ar.ti monopolists, capitalists and laborers. I didn't know how to ^et around tbe Germans because I'm lfemperince. and so I saij 'due consideration will be given to tbe honest, industrious, home-loving Germans.'" Candidate for the Presidency-

The, so far, generally dull Presidential campaign of 1864 is not. without features of enlivenment. There are people who seem to regard the candidature of Benjamin F. Butler as a joke, but a9 it means tbe transfer of myriads of votta, perhaps it is wiser to take it in earnest and consider its funny aspect, if there is one, as an incident. But the ease iB verv different with tbe candidature Qf Mrs. Belva A. Lockwood, of Washington, for tbe Presidency. Seeiug that women ire not entitled to vote for President or hold tbe office of Cbuf Magistrate of the United States, for a '-party" to nominate for this office, aud a person to accept tbe nomination, are facts apt to excite the risibilities of the average citizen. Of course nothing ugbt to be said to the prejudice of the fair sex, and to suggest the absurdity of perpetrating a fruitless folly as a meaus of adding to the "record" of man's inhumanity to woman, is all that can be expected from a masculine pen on this occasion. To say that a woman does uot advance the cause of her sex's rights by making herself a laughing-stock to men and an object of wondering contempt to her tisters. would be going too for. Saf fine it to repeat here that a woman to in the field for tbe Presidency, tbat she can have no votes, and that, consequently, she cannot possibly be elected.
