Rufus Lawrences carpcnleT living in thv old St. Clair building on west Main, vu discovered in his room a little after twelve o'clock to-day to be insensible and almost void of life. Medical help was immediately called bat to oo avail. The man died in a lew minutes afterwards.
It was discovered that death resulted from opium. The dose taken was so large that no doubt was possible as to the intention of the deceased. He haB been a confirmed drinker for years, and although a good carpenter, has been unable to support himself, his wife and child.
Lawience was thirty-eight years old and was a brotherof Ei'.E. Liwituce. At the time Jordan drowned it was thought for a while that it was Lawrence. He and bis wife have been occupying room 53 in the St. Ciair House building. Drs. Young and GiJmour when sueatLOnedl found him unconscious and past any aid. His wife says she did not see him take anything.

IRISH NATIONAL LEAGUE.
Meeting or the Executive Committee in Boston. BOSTON, Aug. 21.—The National executive committee of tbe Irish National League of America has held two secret meetings here. The following were in attendance: Prest. Eagar, M. F. Wilhere, of Pennsylvania, a Vice-President H»v. Chas. O'Reilly, Treasurer Secretary Walsh and M. B. Gannon, of Iowa, Dr. Hannahan. of Vermont, R. A. Odium, pf Pennsylvania, Thos. Flatley, of Massachusetts, P. A. Devine, of New Hampshire, Timothy Moroney, of Lousiana, Hugh J. Carreii, of Roade Island, Patrick Martin, of Mareland, Jno. Wrennj of Indiana, W, J. Qleason, of the State executive committee of Ohio, and Wm. Collins, of the State executive committee of Kentucky. In accordance with the resolution adopted at the previous meeting delegating the power of the selection of the National committee ot seven to the President, Mr. Eagan announced the following names: M. V. Gannon, of Iowa, Michael Boland, of California, Timothy Moroney, of Lousiana, Thos. Flatten, of Massachusetts, M. D. Holmes, of New Jersey, Judge J. G. Donnelly, of Wisconsin, and Hugh J. Carrell, of Rhode Island..
The committee approved the president's action. The president before the adjournment of the National convention presented the following communication:
BOSTON, Aug. 15: Gentlemen oi the National Committee—When accepting the position or president of tbe Irish national league of America, 1 was not aware of the amendment to the constitution passed at an earlier part of tbe day that an amount not over $3,000 shall be annually appropriated out of the general funds of the league to idemnify tbe president of the National League for his timp and services in the cause. 1 desirp to say that in the future as in the past my services will be given to the cause o! Ireland gratitiously and on no condition will I accept any idemnity nor renumeration from tbe League.

Kidder A Co., of theBloomington Road Mills, and after a short vacation in the Ea&t he will return and devote his attention to the latter mill. The firm just dissolved has not only been prominent hert, but all over the country it was well know and occupied a high position. At home tbe firm has been held in the highest regard.
MINE DISASTER.
Seven Men Suffocated to Death. SHAMOKIN, Pa., Aug. 21.—A fire broke out yesterday in the Buckridge mine slope, 1500 feet from the surface. The ccmpany bought tbe Greenback Colliery adjoining workings, which are higher than those of the Buckridge Colliery. The intention was to bore a hole, thirtysix feet in length from the Greenback te the Buckridge Colliery and run tbe creek into both Collieries, and by flooding them put out the fire. While the men were engage.1 in this work to-day, gas suddenly poured in trotn the burning mine and before they could escape, seven men fell victims to the deadly gas. It is impossible to reach their bodies, as both mines are fUll of gas and the fire is increasing. Eleven mules also burned.

A Coal-Miner Crushed to Death. Swrrz CITY, Aug. 20.—[Indianapolis Journal Special.]—An accident occurred this evening in a coal mine located at Lyonton, west of bere, on the Narrow, guage, resulting in the death of a miner named Isaiah Davis, aged forty-five, recently from Pennsylvania, where, it is thought, he had a wife and family. He was industrious and reticent, and |but little was known ot him. He had just shot some coal down when the r«ot fell on him, crusbicg his head and body terribly, death being instantaneous.

Sentesced to Death.
FORT WAYNE, Ind., Aug. .21.—The jury in the case of Fred Richardson trial tor the murder of Amos Bockestro, of Adams county, this state, in March last, after being out all night returned a verdict of murder in first degree and of affixed death penalty. Tbe verdict gives very general satisfaction here and in Adam* county, where Richards was twice mobbed soon after his arrest on suspicion of being guilty ot the crime.'
Man Hunting.
VIENNA, III., August 20.—About 100 men at laat accounts, with guns and pistols, are still in pursuit of David Avery, the man who, Monday, burned his wheat stooks to prevent a levy hy the constables and then went gunning tor his neighbors and burning thtir stock also. The pursuers think he cannot escape. Tbe settlement is greatly excited. Last night after midnignt some one burned Avery's house and barn. Tbe premises were unoccupied.
Barn Burned.
A barn on the farm of Elias Adams near Jessup, in Parke county burned Sunday night It is supposed the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion in a lht of hew hay that had just been stowed away in the loft The barn with all its contents except the horses and a wagon were destroyed, including in addition to hay and grain all his farming implements. No insurance.
Miners Arrested For Conspiracy. PITTSBURG, Aug. 21.—Warrants have been sworn oat by detectives,for the arrest of all the miners in camp at Wood's Run for conspiracy. Trouble is expected, rhe strikers are many of them weakening and returning to work.
Jail Breaking.
ST. JOSEPH, MO., Aug. 20.—At 10 o'clock this morning eight prisoners broke out of the county jail here and went throogl. a sewer pipe of the water closet. Dae was captured and tbe «"»thers are still at large.
