Arrival of the Arctic Relief Expedition at Portsmouth
With Lieutenant Greely and the Survivors 6f His Crew.
Affecting
Meeting Between Him and His Wife-
POKTSMOOTH. N. H. August 1.—At juat about sunrise to-day the United States steamer Alliance, which has been stationed outside the harbor in expectation of the early arrival of the Arctic fleet, discovered a double line of smoke and steaming out, soon became aware of the arrival of the Greely Arctic relief expedition. The armament of the Alliance was brought into play, and gun alter gun thundered forth peals of welcome, to which the cannon of the Greely boats responded, doubtless in grateful recognition. Shortly the Alliance came within bailing distance of the approaching steamers aud with bells ringing ana whistles blowing, the Alliance nailed the Bear and Thetis. Shortly after sunrise the Bear, Thetis and Alliance steamed to a point off the Isle of Shoals, where the first stage ot the homeward bound voyage ot the Gieely relief expedition was finished. Gracefully they came into the harbor with yards tquaied and the stacks pouring I'orta clouds of smoke, fully twenty-four hours before the fleet had been expected. There was Utile about the three vessels 10 denote the severe experience which two of them had passed through. When it became known the Arctic squadrooa bad arrived outside the harbor the excitement on board the Men of War at anchor, was intense. Shortly after 3 o'clock the welcome news of the sale arrival of the Greely fleet spread through the city and when the Bear and Thetis had arrived off Newcastle, Secretary Chandler dispatched a steam launch to Commander Schley with orders that the Bear and Thetis should remain in the offlng unt.l preparations could be completed. The secretary of the navy then proceeded to the Tallapoosa and orders were given at once for the entire squadron of war vessels in the harbor to prepare for the reception of the artic heroes. All the naval vessels were decorated |with Amen* can flags at the topmosts. At noon the press boat, the government tug Leyden, steamed down the river and came to rpchor where a good view of the ceremonies might be obtained. As the Leyden steamed down the river the men on the old ship Constitution ran up the shrouds lifted their hats and waved and shouted a cordial salute. The other vessels in the lower harbor wer.e deckeo in the gayest colors. The flag-ship Tennessee dis played Acting Admiral Brood's penant at the mizzen mass. Th# Tallapoosa gave to'the breez the colors of the secretary ot 1 he navy. The ships soon got under way and steamed down the river. At noon preparations for the reception of the Attic fleet were finished.
As Mrs. Greely passed down the companion way to the bridge she walked with a firm tread and showtd no signs of emotion other than biting her lips and tightly clutching her hands. Lieutenant Greely had not been informed that his wife was about to go on board the Thetis, and a few minutes before her arrival, in conversation with Commander Schley he said he didn't expect to see her to-day as she probably had not been able to reach there so soon. When 'he secretar's barge was seen to leave the Tennessee with Mrs. Greeiy and her two brother's, G. O. and C. A. Nesmith, sitting in the stern sheets. Commauder Schley said to Lieutenant Greely: "Lieutenant, I would like to see you in my cabin lor a few moments." Commander Schley en* tertained Lieut. Greely in conversation about Arctic matters until a peculiar signal was given on the boatswain's whistle, to indicate that Mrs. Greely was on board, aDd ready to meet her husband. Now the lady trembled very much, her breath caine in gasps, and her whole frsm shook with emotion. With faltering steps she went to a cabin door and just at the instant she entered Commander Sehley left the room, leaving the long separated couple alone. Lieutenant Greely was sitting with his back to the door but when Commander Schley so abruptly left him he turned and at the same time saw his wife enter. With a gigantic sob half smothered, Lieutenant oreely bounded from his chair with his eyes gleaming in joy at the sight that gladdtned them. Mrs. Greely, tall, dark and stately, sprang forward to meet her husbaDd," crying: "Arthur, Arthur, home." After Mr. and Mrs. Greely had bten alone tor twenty minutes her brothers were called in acd cordially and teartuliy greettd their brother-in-law. It was uoticeable 00 board the Thetis tbat everybody shed tears when Mrs Greely entered the cabin where her bus band was. Late in the afternoon, the mother of Lieutenant Greely came from Newburyport and was taken at once on board the Tennessee. Shortly after she was put in the secretary's barge and taken on board the Thetis. When she arrived there, Mr. and Mrs. Greely and the latter's brothers were seated in Commander Schley's cabin, alternately crying and laughing and embracing. The instant before Lieutenant Greely's mother entered the cabin Commander Schley stepped to the door and said: "Liieutenant, your mother i9 here." Mn. Greely then entered and threw her arms around her ben's utck say, "my son," my eon," Lieutenant Greely spoke no word save "mother," but in his tone and expression there was a world of tenderness. Clasping his mother in his arms, he did nothing else but sob while the mother cried. Fearing the excitement would be too much for Lieutenant Greely's shattered condition, Commander Sehley entered the cabin and wisely directed the conversation into less emotional channels.

THE PROBLEM SOLVED.
Wheuttc point gets dull you simply turn it over.' When tbe share gets dull you simply turn it over a!s. The •'Economist" plow is made a Steel plow or a Chilled as desired. The "Economist" Sulky Piow is also Self Sharpening either Steel or Chilled.
Below read .he names of some of the farmers who have PAID CASH FOR "ECON »MIST" PLOWS Someoftuem have used the "Economist" plow three seasons and like it better and better the loneer they usp it.

WEALTH."—Franklin-
For 50 years the brains of numerous inventive geniuses have been taxed to devise and patent a successful Self Sharpening" Plow. It was believed th6 advent of such a plow would be bailed with delight by the Farmers of the Country. Just as our lathers tell us the coming of the mold boardplow, which it was said would "scour itself," was received with mcb enthusiasm all over the country, and tbe ol} wooden mold boari piow speedily passed into tbe background of history.
Now you can purchase a plow tbat you can slop in the furrow and without lo^s of time or a cent of expense restore its point and also its share to tbeti original sharpness and efficiency. The wonder is, why any Farmer wants to buy the "Old Style" plow with its share and point welded
together in one solid piece, anymore than ho conld be induced to buv one of the old wooden mold beard plows in use iorty years
When you are guaranteed to save 65 per cent, of the preseot cost ot keeping the "old stvle" plow in renair, by all means why not purchase the' "Economist" 8elf Sharpening Plow.
Tt»e share oftde4'Economist"Plow i9 divided into two parts, the point or nose being separated from the wing, or cutting blade. Eacu pait is bolted direct to 'he standard. both point and share are equal aided, 01 reversible.
