that Hoon'sSABSATABIIXA win core everything, but the fact that on tbe purity and vitality of-the blood depend the vigor and health of the whole system, and that disease ol various kinds is often only the sign that nature Is trying to remove the disturbing cause, we are naturally led to the conclusion that a remedy that gives life and vigor to the blood, eradicates scrofula and other impurities from it, as HOOD'S SABSAPAMIXA undoubtedly does, must be the means of preventing many diseases that would occur without its use hefice the field of its usefulness is quite an extended one, and we are warranted iu recommending it for all derangements of the system which are caused by an unnatural state of the blood. Why Suffer with $a/t-Rheum MZSBBS. C. I. HOOD & Co., Lowell, Mass.

Gentlemen—I was a great sufferer from Salt-Rheum on my limbs, for a dozen years previous to the summer of 1876, at which time I was cured by Hood's Sarsaparilla. The skin would become dry, chap, crack open, bleed and Itch intensely, so that I could not help scratching, which of course made them worse At the time I commenced taking Hood's Sarsaparilla (in the summer of 1876) they were so Dad that they llscharged, and I was obliged to keep them bandaged with linen cloths. The skin was drawn so tight by the heat of the disease that if I stooped over they would crack open and actually Dring tears into my eyes. The first bottle benefited me so mucn that I continued taking it till I was cured I used one box of HoodYs Olive Ointment, to relieve the itching. Hoping many others may learn the value of Hood's Sarsaparilla and receive as much benefit as I have, I am,

Very truly yours, MKS. 8. S. MOODY, No. 76 Broadway.

THE CIRCUIT JUDGESHIP.

ASuggeatiea Fren A Deatcratic Citizen. Ci [Editor GAZETTE.]—The office of circuit Judge is one of great power and responsibility. in this county. The interests of the community, in hit charge and keeping, both civil and criminal, are ol vatt magnitude. No one will deny that it is the most important local office to be filled at the ensuing election, and no one will deny that a mistake in fitting this office will be a serious blow at the interests of the people, and one net soon to be recovered lrom, for his term of office laats six years. It behooves our convention, therefore, to be wise, and to make no mistake in putting a nominee before the people.

A judge should be learned in the law, honest, firm and qualified by age, and by experience at the bar and in the practice to discharge the important trust of the office.

Io this county such material can be found in both parties. In the republican parly there are H. D. Scott, B. E Rhoads, I. N. Pierce and others. In the Democratic party, C. F. McNutt, Wm. Mack, John T. Scott W. |E. Mc Lean and others.

Let our convention profit by the mistake of the Republican convention. H.D. Scott has served as Judge of this circuit almost continuously since the death of Judge Patterson, in January, 1881. His administration of the law has been eminently satisfactory to the people. No on. has questioned his honesty, firmness, fidelity or capacity yet he was unceremoniously set aside in ihe convention to give place to an untried and inexperienced youth, and (or such an important office. "Young men tor war and old men for counsellors" is an old adage and a wise one, and applies with much force here. The wisest counsellor should be selected tor this trust.

No wonder that the business men and the men of wisdom and sense in the Republican party are dissatisfied and disgusted with the actiou of their convention on this matter.

Let our convention make no such mistake. This is not a political office—a msjority of tbe people, without regard to party ties, wiii *eek to pat in this office the best qualified ui.u. No man can be qualified for tbe place without age or experience at the bar and in the practice.

The brightest youth in (he land ia not qualified without the experience that age and practice bring.

It ur convention will nominate aome one ot the ab^ve last uumed gentlemen, there can be no doubt ot hit eleetion. There is a large number of Republicans in this county who will vote for such a man rather than make the dangerous experiment of voting for the Hebuplican nominee.

Each of the tour gentlemen named communds the respect and confidence ot tbe people. Each is qualified for the place and a nomination of either would be followed by a triumphant election.

GEYSERS.

Dr. A. (\Peale states that the geyser region of Iceland covers an area of about 5,000 square m'rles that ot New Zealand 2,200 square miles and of the Yellow stone National Park, 3,578 square miles. Besides these great geyser regions of the world there area number of pieces where a few individual geysers are known, a* in Thibet, the Azores, Mexico, Japan and Java. In the number of springs and noted geysers, the Yellowstone National Park and New Zealand far exceed Iceland, in which the Great Geyser an Stokhr are the only two prominent spoutas. The number of springs in New Zealand appears to be large, but is not Known. Over 2,000 springs in the Yellowstone Park have been enumerated and mapped, and among tbem are seventy-one geysers, of which about twenty are known to spout to a height ot not less than fifty feet. There is probably but little difference between the three regions in the heights to which the column of water is thrown, although the Yellowstone Park baa, perhaps, a greater number which erupt regularly to a height of one hundred feet or more. The maximum recorded heights are 300teet for tbe Excelsior of the National Park, 212 feet tor the Great Geyser of Iceland, and 200 feet for one of the New Zealand, geysers.

THE CIRCUIT JUDGESHIP. In view of the general dissatisfaction on the part of citizens. Republicans as well as Democrats, with the nomination made by the Republican convention for Circuit Judge, there has been increasing interest felt on «11 sides to have the Democrats select a man whom all good citizena can support This feeling has found wide-spread expreasion. The gen eral drift of sentiment hat been in the expression ot tbe hope that the Democrats would nominate Hon. Wm. Mack for judge. They feel that his position at the bar gives assurance to the people that they will find in him a lawyer whose knowledge of tbe law whese character and integrity, will satisfy every one that with him on tbe bench justice will be done. Tois expression of preference for Mr. Mack has come to the GAZETTE from men ot every shade of political complexion and in almost every line of business. The GAZETTB is, therefore, decidedly of the opinion that the strongest and most Batis factory nomination that can be made is that of Mr. Mack. It is assured by Mends of Mr. Mack that while he is not in the ordinary sense of the word a candidate he will accept the nomination it tendered to him. This ought to settle the matter «nd the GAZETTE hopes to see his nominatioa made unanimously and by acclamotion.

NEARLY A DISASTROUS FIRE.

Rtaeh'a Saleea Saved by Tiatly Ditesvery. Had it sot been for the watchfulnese of Special Poliocman Haniah in detecting in its ineipiency a lire in Joe Roach's saloon, corner of Fourth and Ohio streets, this morning shortly after 2 o'clock, a destructive fire must surely have occurred in that block. The officer smelt a smoke in the vicinity of the saloon for quite a while before he heard the windowa oraek from the heat. Be turned in the alarm and the 4's put out the fire. The origin is peculiar, but it illustrates how easy it is to make a fire. In one of tbe little rooms at tbe west end of the saloon was a wooden spittoon filled with saw-dust. Some one-must have unthougbtedly thrown a lighted cigar stump into this box. There is no telling how long it smothered the Same, but the box, which was placed against the partition separating two or the rooms, communicated tbe fire to the partition. Tbe heat burat the glass in the partition, and it was this noise that the officer very fortunately heard. The fire burned a hole down into the cellar at the place where tbe spittoon stocd. The.damage ia inconsiderable.

THE FIRE DEPARTMENT

gave another exhibition of their .incompetency. Why didn't the 2's go directly to the fire instead of going out of tbe way?
