Sale of Market Stands.

Jifctice is hereby given that the stalls anS stands in the market house of the city of Terre Haute, Ind., situated on the northwest corner of Fourth and Walnut streets, will be rented to the highest bidders on the 3d day of April, 1884, between the hours of 8 and 12 o'clock a.m.

The said stands will be rented for the space of one year and persons to whom the same are awarded must In all things conform with the ordinance of the city relating thereto.

Pauper Practice.

Sealed proposals will be received by the Board of Commissioners up to S o'clock p. *. of April 10th, 1884, for the pauper practice in the several townships of Vigo county, for the year ending Way l, 1885.

All bidders must be regular practicing surgeons and physicians, and must attend the poor in sickness and accidents and furnish all needed medicines and surgical appliances in such practice, and perform all postmortems in their respective towhehips when •ailed upon hy the corner. Also to file suitable bond, when awarded the contract.

CHICASO, March 21.—The markets opened on 'Cnanget.his morning with a panicky tendency and wheat and corn sold off rapidly from closing prices Saturday, the former declining a eent and May option selling down to Mo, making the cash article on tho same basis, the lowest known at this season la twenty years. These low prices invoked the greatest trading activity seen in weeks, and after the first flurry buying became more general and prices gradually advanced. Return of Judge Carlton.-

United States Commissioner Carlton has returned from Utah Territory. He willgowlth the rest of the commissioners to Washington in about three weeks to receive further instructions from the government. The commission will meet in Utah the latter part ot May.

Collett Park.

At a meeting of Mayor Armstrong and Park Commissioners Thomas, McLean and Farringlon the announcement was made that Wm. P. McCarthy had filled his contract to clean the grounds and remove trees, etc.

Twenty-five bushel* ot blue grass seed have been bought of J. A. Foete to sow the park as soon as the cleaning is done.

A lence was discussed at length. The commissioaers do not favor Mr. Earnsbaw's suggestion of an osage hedge fence A wire fence was vo:ed down. It i« probable a picket fence will be bnilt but the matter will come up again at a meeting next Monday.

Messrs. Armstrong and McLean wer£ appointed a committee to draw up rules and regulations for park government.

E. H. Colbertsoa.

No trace of the runaway, E. H. Cul bertson, has been learned today. A letter from Mr. Co wen, hie attorney in Chicago, has, however, been received asking about the attachment against his accounts here which Mr. Dave Henry attached for the protection ot creditors. It is now known that the Mrs. Grace L. Pratt with whom he has runaway, was {he same he introduced here at his boarding house as his wile. She was here with him about a week and then returned to Chicago whither he followed her with the results as already novated.

The News Journal to Be Enlarged. CINCINNATI, O., March 26.—The News Journal comes out Wednesday morning as an eight page paper, under new management, with a complete change of heads of all departments. Governor Underwood has tendered his resignation as gen eral manager of the concern. It has been ascertained that Cha*. M. iltesle, the well known Democrat of this city has purchased the stock and will succeed Governor Underwood as general manager.

ST. Louis, Mo., Mareh 26.—The assessment ol taxable property in this state, outside of railroads, bridges and telegraph lines, is just completed, and shows a large increase over the preceding year. Tbe total real eetate is $492,489,000 personal property, $187,348,000 estate for railroads, bridges and telegraphs, $40. 000,000 grand total, (719,000,000, an increase of $80,000,000 in two years, and $118,000,000 since 1881.

LOUISVILLK, March 26—Tbe CourierJournal London, Ky.. special says: A terrific cyclooe, the severest ever known in this section of the country, passed near that place and Pittsburg, two miles north of London, about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, carrying death and dcstructionin its train, especially at Pittsburg where it was |he Severest. Tbe Methodist church was razed to the ground and much other property damaged. At Pittsburg, John Hailman, brakeman, was 4 blown from a freight box and carried about 60 feet, lighting on hiB head in a creek, breaking his neck, and causing instantaneous death. Three freight bona two coal oil tanks aad a caboose wer» blown from thO track, slightly injuring others and detaining the south bound mail train five hours. The little cabin in which Mr. Broughton was living waa blown down, instantly killing Mrs. Broughton and two little children.

The following^ persons are thought to be mortally wounded: Col. C. W. Springer, both legs broken, and eut in the need Mrs. C. W. Springer, hip mashed Kobeit Redings, spinal column broken, and cut on the head Miss Sal'iio Goff, cut on the head James Warren, two ribs brbken, and wounded on the head. Among those slightly wounded are W. Woolsey, William Philpot, Mrs», Thomas Ross and others whoee names could not be learned.

Virginia Thornier Storm.

PETERSBURG, Mareh 26.—A tremendous thunder storm burst over the city shortly alter midnight last night. Rain came down in torrents. The thunder was severe and shook tbe houses. The Appomattox river at this point is very high and tbe meadows on the Chester^ field side of the river are submerged. The water is'still rising. A protracted spell ot dry weather this month hae neatly retarded all farming operatione in this seetioa.

SHOCKING AFFAIR.

A Charivari That Ended in a Tragedy EAST SAGINAW, MICH., March 26.—A shoeking tragedy occurred near the village of Coleman, on the Flint and Pere Marquette Western Division, forty milea west of East Saginaw, last night. The particulars as learned are that a party of young men went some distance from town to charivari a newly married couple, and on their return, about 11 o'clock, halted at the residence of an eld German named Van Valkenburgh and proceeded to give him a little racket and noise for mere fun. Tbe old German, it appears, did not relish the sport, and opened fire upon them with a loaded gun, the contents of the first charge striking a young man Charles Cleave In the mouth, making a frightful wound and killing him instantly. Van Yalkenburgh Aed, and at last advices had not been arrested. Cleave was a young single man and came from Chatham, Ont., where his parents tragedy eaases intense Coleman.

LAWRENCE, MASS.. March 24.—In the anit of Ellen Leahy against Arohbishop Williams for the reoovery of money doposited with the Catholic Augusunian society, the jury to-day tendered a verdict for the plaintiff of $1,240 with the interest, the full amount sued for. An appeal will be taken.

ALBANY, March 26.—In the assembly, the bill paased to day regulating the sale of oleomargarine and other substitutes tor butter. Tbe main feature is a rule requiring a conspicuous posting of notices of the character of stuff sold.
