If inclined to be feverish in winter look at your coal bills! It in summer, study the watering-place hotel rates. The fever will immediately give place to cold chille. "The surest way to take cold," says a distinguished physician, "is to hug the. stove." Toung men who go courting on Sunday nights should remember this and not spend all their time hugging the stove.

Care should betaken to have sleeping apartments well ventilated, but not too much so. If you waka up with a cold in the head it is a sign that the bed-room was too breezy. If you wake up with a headache it is a sign that the lodgeroom was too close.

Melancholia in married women is very hard to conquer, though this prescription has been found effective: Syr. (simple), 1 oz, chloride of sodium, aqua pure, 2 oz. Allow the preparation to evaporate until it becomes a dry powder. Place it in a snail oiled silk bag and put the bag in the outside pocket of a new sealskin sacque. Dose: One sacque every two winters.

The affliction known as softening of the broin id now very common and seems to be spreading. The patient has feverish pulse, weak respiration and runs to outlandish styles of dress, supposed to be of English origin. A cace handle is the only diet he cares for, though a cigarette is now and then desired by way of variety. Medicine does no good, but striking the patient a hard blow with a feather will otten cure if it don't kill him, and in either case the change i9 for the better.

"Time to Slop It

It's loo bad, Sir or Madam, but don't get frightened. Your hair is falling off— that's certain. A glance in the mirror, or an Investigating committee of fingers tell tt|e dismal story. We won't discuss the possible causo. It Is enough that Parker's Hair Balsam used now will prevent further destruction. Is your hair somewhat gray, too, and crisp? Alas, yes. The Balsam will give back the original color, softness and gloss. Not a dye, not oily, elegantly perfumed, a perfect dressing.

THE TIB THAT BIND!.

Remarkable Exhibition of Christian Harmony in tbe Rev- J. P. Vewman'8 Church.

N«w York 8pe«ial.

With a strong effort t*-Make him&elf heard abevs tbe noise of the meeting in tbe Bev. Dr. Vewman's church last night, a veteran Mew Tork politician *aid: "I've seen a goal many disorderly political primaries, hut I aever saw any thing like this."

The meeting bad been called for the parpose of electing a superintendent of tbe Sunday school, a clerk of the church, and "the transaction of such other business as may regularly ooue before said meeting." Tbe church* is divided against itself. Its pastor, Rev. Dr. Newman, has never been installed, and is a member of the Methodist church. He has been tbe pastor two years, and a large portion of the membership, headed by Dr. J. W. Banney, is anxious to have him sever his oonnestion with the organization. They are many politicians in the congregation. They followed General Grant, who followed Dr Newman. There were. fully eight hundred people present when Dr. Ranney, senior deacon, took the platform and announced tbe object of the meeting to be the election of officers, "and to deliberate npon Dr. Vewman's relations to the churob."

There was immediately an uproar. Dr. Ranney looked down smilingly on the upturned faces of a howling, soreaming gesticulating mob. Dr. Newman sat in tbe midst of the uproar, not appearing to notice it, but apparently absorbed in conversation with his wife.

Deacon DeWitt finally made himself beard, and nominated .for chairman Deaeon McDonald. Dr. Ranney insisted on his right te preside. The crowd hissed and shouted at him. "Well, brothers." he said, "I can talk as long and as loudly as any of those geese oan blss." lb the midst of the uproar Deacon Cummings attempted to read a section of ecclesiastical law. Whereupon there was a noisy demand from all parts ot the hall that be "sit down." Deacon Andersen suggested, as a solution to the trouble, that Dr. Newman be elected to preside.

Dr. Banney then jumped to bis feet, and waving his arms excitedly, declared the meeting adjourned, and said if it went on its deliberations would be illegal and without force. The orowd surged around the platform and prevented Dr. Ranney's descent. Soice one nominated another chairman. "I #aj this meeting is dissolved," said Dr. Ranney.

Then Mr. McDonald was nominated chairman. He stepped to the platform and said that although he didn't want the office, he should aot without fear, or favor, and hoped Dr. ltauney woulomot feel personally aggrieved. Dtf Katiney then insisted that he was still chairman, and that he had meaut to dissolve the meeting only in case harmony oould not be maintained. This provoked another uproar. "I think that thte* rabble should be dispersed," exclaimed Deacon Seymour. The greatest confusion followed, in which charges were made that Dr. Newman had packed the church in order to get a vote sustaining his course. Before this charge oould be refuted, a motion was put from one corner of tbe hall that Dr. Newman's actions be sustained. A rousing and overwhelming "aye," followed by a succession of cheers and tigers, shook the ehurcb. The meeting then dispersed in «onfu9lon.

A

SINGULAR CASE.

Tie Salt Against John Maynard' ie Kansas Dismissed. Readers of the

GAZBTTR

will remem

ber that several months ago an office came here from Thayer, Neusha couuty, Kan., and arrested John Maynard on a charge of obtaining money on false pietenses. At that time Maynard was working'On the farm of T. C. Wilson in Riley township. Maynard was a young mao who had borne an excellent reputation in Riley township where he was born and raised and where he had lived all his life except a matter of three or four months in the summer of 1880 when he worked on a farm in Kassas. The charge was that he had conspired with a man living there on whose farm he had worked during the summer, to male money by the fraudulent transfer and mortgage of some farm property. Tbe news of this was learned by his friends in Riley township with great surprise and few if any believed him guilty of the crime with which he was charged. Circumstances afterwards developed went to support this theory, for his employer in Kansas had confessed his guilt by committing suicide when his arrest was sought to be made. He had undoubtedly used Maynard, a yotmg and inexperienced country boy, as a tool to carry out schemes which the younger and honester man believed to be all right when he signed ocuments, the full purport and meaning of which he did not fully understand.

Maynnrd himself, when arrested, was horrified at tbe thought of being suspected of any crime. By a very singular mistake and one for which he was in no way responsible, he and the officer became separated at East St Louis, when on their way to Kansas. Tbe officer had put him on a particular car and was himself on another. In tbe make up of tbe trains these cars went in different directions. Maynard finding himself separated trorn the officer really made an effort to find him, but failed at the time and then disappeared. He has not come back here from shame, it is thought, at the idea of his having been suspected of being a participant in a fraud. His whereabouts are now unknown.

A few days ago his case was called in court in Neosha county, Kas., and dismissed by the prosecuting attorney with the statement that there was nothing in the case against Maynard, and that there was no farther use in cumbering the records with it.

Let These Things be OonsideredThousands of men die every day who oould be saved. Prejudice is rffainly to blame for this loss of life. -If it were believed that the sum of disease may certainly be reduced by physic, much would be gained. And yet tbe proposition is very simple if you take out daily more impurities than is daily generated, you will sooi. be rid of impurities. The effect of this wise practice is soou seen tu Bilious. Liver, and Kidney troubles. But it is equally of value in head and brain affections in Pleurisy, Pneumonia, Apoplexy, and Paralysis^

In chronic and acute Rheumatism, and in all affections of the bowels, this principle soon relieves and cures, when the medicine used is Brandreth's Pills.

Tea, when all other means and medicine tyave failed to relitve from pain, these pills have cured, by taking impurities from the bowels and blood, and thousands of men and women now place Brandreth's Pills amoug tbe blessings of mankind.
