Mias Ida Mercer returned to Nevins township on Monday so as to be ready to begin her school Jan. 2.
The schools in our township began Monday, closed for New Year's -day. From this time forward there will be no more interruption from holidays until the close for the yearly vacation, and we believe both teachers and pupils are glad.
Miss Mime Stewart went to Chicago on Monday for a visit. Mrs. Nesl Howard and her sister Miss Belle Deeter are visiting friends in Clay county.
Mt. Harvey, of Newport, Vermillion Os. spent Sunday with Mr. Johnson. John Bennis returned on New Year's day from a several month's sojourn in Illinois to visit his friends in the north eastern part of the township.

Niw Tear's paased off very quietly in our neighborhood, a tew turkey dinner's and a few social hops being the entertainment*.
Singing was well, attended, at Japgjt last Saturday night. Among the visitors from Park County were Mr. Bess Falls and lady, George Boatmar. and Miss Mary Laney, Miss Eliza A. Boatman and her cousin from IHiaols. The Boatman family led by Prof. Cottrell, gave us some vocal music, for wbioh they are becoming famous, whereever they are known.
The Binginf School under the manage ment of Prof. Cottrell at Pleasant Grove, closed Sunday night with the old year. It will open again with the new year of 1884. Amour the visitors from Mount Zion, were George W. Boatman and his little brother John, Willie Newton and George Laney George Boatman favored ua with some music from the harp which Was hard to beat.
The hop at Jim Valentine's Monday night was aplendid, the young folka all enjoyed themselves till a late hour, everybody darced and aeemed to know that it was their last dance in'the old year, for they shook the,ground for miles around and even the old chimney (whieh Was a brick structure) could not stand the racket and took a tumble within five feet of the ground.'
Tne hop at Mr. Lunsford's Christmas uight was a grand success and all went merry as a marriage bell.
