Aa elegant supper was served and every one present had a merry time. Dancing was indulged in to Lockard's delightful full string band and the light fantastic was tripped until a late hour this morning. Altogether il was a brilliant celebration of the important occasion and one long to be remembered. May they live to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary as loyally.

This waa that th* 'elder Jefferson"—meaning the father of tbe eminent actor, Joseph Jeffereon— bad played Kip Van Winkle during the memorable season ot bis troupe at the old pork house theatre on Mulberry atreet, more than forty years ago.'
The father of Mr. Jeffereon is not known in dramatic history as tbe '•elder" of tbe name that distinctive being aceorded to Joseph Jefferson, Sr.* tbe first ot the line In this oountry, who was grandfather of tbe illustrious star of our time. The father is generally

designated as Joseph Jefferson, Jr., or second, and derives his celebrity rather from his having been tbe son of the Great and tbe father of the Greater Jefferson than from any speoial blstrionio poweceof hie own. Ha was a

but not an actor of distinction, and It was beeauee of his well-known qualilcations in this respect that 1 considered it doubtful whether he had essayed, her* or elsewhere, eo diflloult a role aa Rip Van Winkle.
To arrive at the truth of the matter^ which appeared ef sufltoient historic importance to warrant investigation, 1 consulted all the works of theatrioal reoefd witnln my reach, but without finding any mention of tbe seoond Jellerson aa a representative of the part. I tben wrote to Mr. Jobn T. Ford, the distinguished 1 manager of the Baltimore aud Washington theatres, wbo is very conversant

and possesses a valuable dramatic library, asking him for information. Mr. Ford's answer was that he ooutd dlscover no mention, in any of the books of his collection, ot a rendition of tbe part by Mr. Jefferson's father and tbat while it waa possible be bad played it during hla career as an Itinerant manager, ifc was, in bis opinion, improbable. Had it been tbat he had done so, the Tact would.: hardly bave escaped record.
Tbi« was strong presumptive ovid ia favor of my view of the question, bat not conclusive. 1 oonseqnently took tbe 1 liberty of addreseing an inquiry te J»~ seph Jefferson himself. From him 1 have reeeived the reply that his "father did play Rip Van Winkle in Terra Haate in 1840- or 1841."
