It Is cunous to observe how V.i tl»u talk about Webb Bayless ia coanectivn with the Mrs. Nelson murder has ceased. In the light of the true facts about tjue finding of the policy Bayless was beyoad doubt wronged by the gossip. Tbe popular version of the polioy business is wrong, and Bayless could bavt prevented a great deal ot the talk about hunsslf had he taken the trouble at the 'inn to explain more satisfactorily tin.- lw ivuer and incidents leading to tbe discovery instead of allowing vague and suspicious ruinate that eould have been easily »t at rest pass on without denial. In tbe liret place, it appears thr-t Bailees was not drawn into the ease of bis own calling and that his connection wim it in any capaoity was due more to accident than anything else. It will be remembered that previous to the "discovery of thepolicy bearing Mrs. Nelson's name the murdered'woman was supposed to hav« been

and the police were following that clue. Ida Nicholas had been -living at the house of Dave Henrv, the "crank" in thfe case, at the time she was last sean, and Henry was consequently a most important person, especially being sought after ^by the detective^working at the cuee the hope of getting a clue. It is possible, too, that at mat time, before tbe public was fully aware of the idiosyncraaies of Henry, some persons were rash enough to believe that the crazy blacksmith had a hand in her disappearance. Henry saw in his sudden elevation to prominence the greatness oi himself ss a detective and aept declaring with persistent regularity that be could turn up something important. John Bradford, an unpretentious Sugar Creek farmer who wears a heavy beard and his pants his boots, was the first to fall inio the idea that perhaps Henry could discover something, and Bradford was not long in impacting his knowledge to Bayless. Ida Nicholas had taken a basket belonging to Henry's family from their house when she left it for the last time and Henry doubtless thought that by a thorough search of the place where the remainsvfcte found he might be able to identify something belonging to ber. The lact that many fruitless searches of the same spot had been previously made by other parties did not

of bis mind, which was greatly augaieaten by sleepless nights and the general peculiarity of his constitution. Accordingly, H«nry, Bradford and Bayless visited the spot, conveyance thereto being furnished by Bradford. On the way they struck up some sort of an agreement about a reward if any dit oovery they made should lead to such a -ng.. Henry mainly did the searching, Ln being Number One and having the nfldence, the other two acting undf directions. The search revealed uo iuug and they were about to depart, but litnry wasn't satisfied and they remained, longer. Finally, Henry came across the* hollow, rotten stump covered ever with leaves and brush. Running' his hands down he drew up a pileol leaves and up also came the policy.' Heury's exclamation drew the two others to the spo and the policy was eagerly examined! Ii was in an envelope, and was torn as described. The paper was damp and could not be read. All they could make out was word which, from its iudistinctne-s, they

The paper was taken to Sheriff Cleary, and after being dried and spread out its exact nature appeared. Now, ss will be seen, this discovery was made when tba murdered woman was thought to be IdaNicholas and the question of Mrs. Nefson had never entered tbe case nor did any of the parties know there was tuch a person. Bayless wss immediately nt to Anderson to learn what he could nbuut Mr?. Nelson, taking the policy witb him.. He went there, found Mrs. Aid^on mussing, produced the policy, and then commenced the hullabaloo. It will therefore be seen how unkind all this gimip about Bayless was.
