Masonic Temple, on 6th avenue and 23d street is now on fire. About half past 8 this morning the roof of the Masonic temple on 23d street and 6th avenue was discovered afire and before the engibes reached the spot, great volumes of smoke belched from the windows in the asylum of Knights Templars in the Mansard story, just below the roof and dense thick volumes ef smoke also poured frem the roof, followed by sbeets of flame which darted high up in the air. Fire engines came tearing to the scene a few minutes after the alarms sounded. The report that Masonic Temple was on fire spread rapidly and hundreds of the fraternity hurried to the place. A large force of police kept the crowd back from the firemen. Patrick Lynch and Samuel Warren, of the foremost firemen in the Mansard story, were struck to the floor by the heavy plastering falling from the ceiling and were overcome by the heat aud smoke. They were rescued by their comrades and removed to the hospital, restored to consciousness and sent home. As the building below the Mansard is fire proof the firemen devoted their energies to saving what portion they could ol the Mansard story. The entire building is water soaked and much valuable property destroyed. After two hours hard work the further spread of flames was prevented in the Mansard portion but tbey were still raging in the roof. It is thought the loss will not fall short of $100,000 as the costly frescoing and other decorations are destroyed. In The Commandery room was expensively fitted up and in the adjoining closets were many costly equipments and uniforms of Sir Knights. Austin room," named in honor of the deceased grand secretary, was recently fitted up at an expense of $10,000 find the beautiful pictures which the order had been so long accumulating are very much injure d, if not ruined.

THOMAS A. HENDRICKS.

The Veteran Statesman of Indiana. Thomas Andrews Hendricks was born in Ohio on thfe 7th ot September, 1810. He was graduated from South Hanover College in that state in 1840, when he removed to Chambersburg, Pa., and be^an the study ef law. Three years later he was admitted to the bar and began the practice of his profession in Indiana. His career opened auspiciously and-in a few years he became a lawyer of excellent standing. In l&kS he was elected to the State legislature and in 1850 was a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention. The next year he was elected to the House of Representatives, and in 1853 his term expired. He *'as appointed commissioner of the General Land Office by President Pierce, and from this on he has been one of the fnost important political characters iD Indiana.' In 1S60 he ran for Governor against Henry S. Lane, and was defeated. He was elected to the United States Sea ate in 1S63 for the long term." Here he won considerable distinction as a e'ebatey acd served with marked ability in the Committees on Claims, Public Buildings aud Grounds, the Judiciary, Public Lands and Naval A Hairs.

His name was presented to the Democratic National Convention in lSfi^t as candidate for the Presidency, aqd he would no doubt have received the nomination but for the Ohio '-legates, who by persistently voting for Horatio Seymour finally caused a stampede in bis favor. The Iriends of Mr. Hendricks have always insisted that his nomination would have ensured a Democratic victory. Again in 1S72 he was proposed as a candidate in the Democratic Natiosal Convention, and but fdr the unexpected t'ussions of that time he would probably have been the nominee of his party. He was nominated for Vice President in 1870, and since that memorable contest his professional duties have engrossed the greater part of his attention. He will be the candidate of his partv next year for Vice-President, with Tilden.

Violation of the Law

Though it is certainly known by ibis time that there is a law compelling persons to get permits from the City Clerk before they can build, a great many to. tally fail to comply wivh it and build without getting the necessary permit. The ordinance provides that "any person vi lating aay of the provisions of the ordinance shall, upon conviction before the Mayor, be finrd in any sura not exceeding $10" It might be well for builders to attend to the matter promptly and avoid any trouble that ni&y arise, as it is the intention to enforce the ordinance strict Iv. It isn'c fair for souie people to be compelled to get out permits when others, probably building not more than a squsre away, do not come up to the requirement.

Nathan Morris.

Nathan Morris, of Parke county, whose insane act of burning his own residence and store was related in the GAZETTE, WES found, yesterday, asleep a hotel at Newport. He bad previously deposited in the bank there $1,450, but, as bis wife saw him have over $1, 800 a tew hours before the arson, it is supposed he was robbed of a part of it. It is understood that his arrest has been ordered, so that the question of his sanity may be acted upon.

HESRY Waiters-OS, editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal, in an editorial in tbis morning's issue of his paper telegraphed to it from New York, makes empbptic denial of the story Rocdall's iiiends are circulating in his behalf to the eifeok^that Mr. Tilden is anxious to have and is working to secure his election to the speakership. Mr. Wattetson says Tilden is takiag no part whatever in the speakership contest

He Went to th8 Crapo House Mr. Richardson, if Greeucastle, put up at the Crapo House last night. At 3 o'clock this morning he made the discovery that he was minus $52. He suspects Mr Hughes, also of Greencastle, a near and "dear" neighbor over there, and the officers have not been able to find him.

What Struck an Old Soldier.

"It will soon be twenty years since the war closed." Under tbe hot son of August, 1882, the village of Dover, N. J., lay still as tbe sphinx in Egypt, while Elijah Sharp, of thai place, slowly and softly spoke of the past. "Yea," he said, "1 was in the army and saw many of the sights of those tearful years. I was finally dlqpharged from disability, resulting from sunstroke. 1 came home, miserable in health and spirits so enfeebled that"! took, cold on the slightest exposure, Life seemed wertl^lcss to me I lived only in memory.^ "That was sad enough," 1 said, dividing my last two cigars. "That's so," responded Mx. Sharp "but I got over it. "Ootgrew it? Xot Exactly. When in that condition I began taking PARKER'S Toxic, AND my healtu commenc* edno improve right away. I was astonished at it, ana so was my wife, 1 piled on the flesh and oouli eat anything. Mr ambition biazed up. I could attend to business, and now—excepting.that 1 have to take oare about exposing myself to the hot suu—-I am as well as I was, tbe day I enlisted. Whit differences there are in things—guns and bayonets kill PAHKEK'S TONIC saves."

This preparation, Which has been an own as PARKER'S GINGER TONIC, will hereafter be callea simply PARKER'S TONIC, AS unprincipled dealers are constantly deceiving their customers by substituting inferior articles under' the name of ginger, and as ginger Is really an unimportant ingredient, we drop the misleading word.

There is no change, however, in the preparation itself, and nil bottles remaining in the bands of dealers, wrapped urnhr-the name of PARKER'S GINGER TONIC, contain the genuine medicine if tbe fac-simile sinnature of HISCOX A Co., is at tbe bottom ol the outside wrapper.
