PALACE CAR RELIGION.

A party named Harris, who has been making a specialty of converting railroad men, has a scheme on foot to build a gospel car, a sort of a palace affair, with kitchen and all the conveniences, io use to run around the country converting railroad men. His plan is to have religious people subscribe about fighteen thousand doilars to-build the car, and he will attend to the building and equipment of the car, and run It on shares. It will be hauled to a large city and sidetracked, when the work of converting can commence, and when all of the railroad men that can be reached have been made to see the en or of their ways, the palace car evangelist will couple his outtit on to the hind end of a train and seek fresh fields and pastures new. The scheme looks as though it would be a splendid one tor Harris. He could travel over the country like a prince, and get in his work like a star actor. While Thk Sun would not throw a straw in the way of the evangelization of the loudest mouthed brakeman, or the dirtiest switchman or car wheel tester oit earth, it must say that the palaco ear Religion does not look feasible. It is not according to the teachings of Christ, who was contented to ride a jackass, and do all the good he could out under the stars, with no palace Qar upholstered in red plush, and who never rode on a pass. If the Reverend Harris was going to make a specialty of converting superintendents, and general managers, and directors. a palace car with a side-board, and an organ, and a baptistery, might be appropriate, but as that class has all beea converted, and have palace cars of their own, he has got to find his field amongthe conductors, the brakeman, the freight handlers, the baggage smashers, and the engineers and firemen, and they had all rather get under a shed in the depot, and sit on trucks, and listen to the word, than to gb iuto a palace coach, with their greasy overalls on, and listen to a dude in a circus car. Such men are sensible men, who are not caught by gilt-elged tomfoolery, and the palace car evangelist would build up a barrier between himself and the boys the moment that elegantly upholstered juggernaut shouId roll into the depot. Some citizen would ask what car that was, and a brakeman would spit across the platform and say that was a private snap of the New Jerusalem train dispatcher. Railroad men who know enough to take religion, tf they want it, whether it is handed to them on a tin platter or a silver service, would go around a block to keep out of sight of a man who had to have a special car to eat and sleep in, and a closet in one corner to pray in. The quiet, unostentatious worker in God's vineyard, who would go to the switch house and talk religion and smoke dos leg tobacco with the switchman, while he told him of the glories of the religion to which the railroad man was a StfSiitfe!, would double discount the palace- car 'evangelist on souls saved. The godd man who would travel on a caboose of a freight train, and talk to the boys of a land that is fairer than this, as they eat the cold lunch fropi a tin pail, put up by loving hands at home, and who could go out and shovel snow if th.e train got stalled, or hold a lantern while (he hoys unloaded a car load of way freight, could garner more soals and turn them over in good order to the general manager of the broad euage- heavenly line, than the palace car fellow, with his colored cook and h^-thambermaid, could in a life time. When those whose business it seemft to be to save souls learn that a plain statement of facts between man and man, and an appeal to their good sense, has a thousand times more effect than gilt edged and upholstered monkey work, there will be fewer such lunkhead enterprises sprung upon the men who are always glad to contribute to any scheme that promises good to the Master. Let the eighteen thousand dollars that iB proposed to be expended for a mahogonr and walnut palace,on wheels that would never catch a human soul till Hades froze over, be paid out to buy clothing and food for the children of railroad men who have been disabled, or who are sick and unable to work, and it will be the meaae of saving more souls than can be sstad by'the Pullman plan, and the men who contribute the money will be much happier to know that it has gone to bank up hungry little stomachs with pork and beans, than they would to know that a man wa» traveling around the country in a palace oar, with a French cook, singing gospel hymns on side tracks, and being laughed at by the whole oountrv.
