CORNER STONE ROBBERY.

The Contents of the Coiner 8tone of the A Church Stolen-

Nothing Left but a Piece of a Bible and Coin—Excitement in Coicrcd Circles. I

'-'TLI

Early this morning it was noised around that the corner stone of the Colored Methodist church on Third and Sheet streets had been dug out and the contents stolen. The rumor naturally created a good deal of excitement in colored circles, aDd icquiry proved that the rumor was but too true. Sometime during the night eome persons, at present unknown, dug out the bricks »ur. rounding tbe stone and took out the stone. This morning when the theft was discovered the box that had been placed in the stone was found to contain nothing but apiece of an old bible and a coin. The church was built in 1870 and at the time, as is customary at all corner sjone laying, the records of the caurch, coins and various other ariicles of interest were placed therein.

Rev. Wilson, the minister, was seen this morning at his home in the rear of the church on Sheet street. He was very naturally shocked «the.occurrence. He said that he did not think the work re--paid the thieves. Charles Jackson, the teachcr at the colored school, said he was present at the laying of tbe corner stone, and to the best uf his recollection there was placed in the box lour or five dollars in coin and scrip, the latter being of the Shannon and Watson kind, then in dircula'ion, a list of the members of the church, newspapero, a bible and the emancipation proclamation.

Some of the bricks around the corner stone were lotose and that made the work of the thieves comparatively easy. The stone was located the north corner of the church. Rev. Wilson says if ihe loose bricks had been replaced, he thinks the affair of last night would never have happened.

As soon as the theft was discovered the trustees of the chufcb, prominent a niong whom are Aaron Saunders and Mail Agent Walker, were notified of the fact and the police set about to make an investigation. Nothing could be learned that would implicate any person, though the police profess to have suspicions of several parties—colored, by the way— and some arrests may be expected to take place before very long, if the investigation leads to what it is thought it will at present.

Mrs. Johnson, a colored woman who lives next door to tbe church, says she heard the noise made by the thieves be tweeu one and two o'clock this morning. 1

TO REMBVC PA^NT. *Ffbmrcefc*»uA4 I

One eveiiicg last week there was a tea party at the residence of a deacon, ana after supper the gentlest* went to Ihe smoKlng room, and amQBfed and told stories while the ladies visited and axchanged pieccs of silk neckties aod ribbons for making silk quilts. Tbe men gott) talking about the changes that ocenr in peoples' lives in ft few years, and each had eome illustration in bis own experience. The yofng minister had been a quiet listener, anil smoked his cigar in a dreamy sort of a way, and when they had all had an Inning telling stories the doctor said to the minister:

Elder, yoa must have noticed, as much as anybody, the changes that time brings. Cant yoa tell us something in your experience." "1 was just thinking," said tbe elder, as he threw his cigar stnp in the cuspidore, and took afresh one and lit it, "Of something that kapi&ied to me last witter in Chicago, and I will tell it to you to illustrate bow added years brings intelligence to the most of us, though it can no bring forgetfulncss, and to illustrate also how a man may be reasonably smart in knowledge of the world, and not know enough to keep his mouth shut at the proper time About twenty-five years ago, when I was eight years of age, my people lived in a small town, and I was allowed to run loose about the neighborhood- Yon wouldn't believe it to look at me new, but I was a terrcr. that is, I was full of fun, O, so full. I was up to all sorts of mischief, and my good lather and mother feared that I would nevei amount tomuct, and Igue6s they fear it now, but that is neither here nor there. Among my playmates was a little .girl of my »vn age, a bright little tning with blue ees and brown hair, and a dimple in lic-r cheek. It I was a terror tha wtis a terror, She could climb a fence quicker than I could, and outtun me, and wasn't afraid of any thing, and we were the best friends you ever saw. Her name was Susan. 0L6 dajr we were playing in the back ard, barefooted ana something induced Uo to go into her father's Lmio. On looking around t^r fcomthingt urnrse us I tov.ua acouplo of pots of pa-nt u:nt her lather Lad been useiug about Uie Louse, One pot was red and the other green We look the brushes and painted the stall in the barn red, and one wheel of her father's wagon green, and finally she suggested hat we paint our lett. Sol painted one other ieet green and the other r.d, and she painted mine, and

I rolled up my pants and she painted clcar up to my knees, and then she got jealous because I had more stvle than she did, and so 1 painted her legs also, but 1 striped them, the stripes of alternate grten and red running around like a barber pole. Being a girt we .argued thai it was right that hers should be more gaudy than me. Well, I have seen beautitul paintings since, ana .have done a little with the brush since arriving at man's estate, but I have never seen any thing that gave me the satisfaction, as a work of art, that the work of that afternoon in the studio of the barn did. I have seen marble sculpture of hnman form divine, in the g»llerys of the old and new world since, but I have never seen anything that could hold a candle to tbt landscape that I painted on Susan. She was so tickled that she had to go right in the bouse and show the chromo to her mother and it wa3 not more than a minute before a solitary horseman, about eight years old, with one leg green and tne o.her red, might have been seen poing over a picket fence just ahead ot Susan's mother's mop. I got home alive, and presented a picture io my mother that she had never seen in her wildest dreaihs. Paint tverwhere. And she watmed me, and Susan's mother across tbe street warnitd.her, and us two young artist mingled our cries across the dusty street. I need not dwell "on the jveeKS uf agony we endured in having that)paint removed. There was some sort of dryer in the paint that, made it dry and shine, and it seemed to pane trate clear to the bone. At least it did Oh me, and 1 suppose Sustn was made of the same kind of clay. Any way, all the fotue we lived in that town after that Susan worejstockings, and I judge she Vas having'the same trouble 1 was, be ing Washed every night in benzine, until I atmos: wished there was no such thing as being artist. I had almost forgotten the cir cumstance, in A busy ife until last winter I was down to Chicago to a mis:i nary convention. There were delegates from all over the country, and many of us took our wives. One evening, after the business of the convention was over, there was a reception at the residence oi one ot the directors at our society, snd Ijwas introduced to the wife oi a brother minister*. There was somthlng about her eyes that seemed sort of familiar, and finally she told me wbo she was, and as sure as I am smoking this five cent cigar, it was Susan- Well, we talked about old times, andjold friends, for along time, and of the good work her husband was doing out west but tor the lite of me I not keep my mind off of that incident about the paint. Here she was a grown woman, tbe glorious eyes she bad in youth were even more beautitul, and was enough to break up a prayer meeting, but I could only see her as che looked when I got.through painting her. Becoming lamiliar, 1 finally said, 'By the way, Susan, I would like to ask you one questiwa,' and she said, 'certainly' and I- allowed my eye to twinkle a little, and I asked: "Susan, tell me, did you ever get that paint off your "Sir!" said she, her whole frame showing the greatest indignation, and just then a bald headed preacher came up and she turned to me and said, "This is my husbbnd. Husband, this is an old friend of my youth, one who Knew me when we went barefooted together." "Ah, indeed, glad to meet you,' said the brother. My wife has often told me abotit how you and she used to handle the paint brush and transform nature into high art, and, eh, she is gone,' I looked around for Susan, and she had taken the arm ef another minister, and gone to the refreshment room, and before I could see her again she was gone^ome and I never saw her after. But for several nights my dreams were filled with visions of haDd painted articles, barns, indignant mothers with brooms, benzine and sweet oil, and a pair of the loveliest eyes that ever, were was seen. But herecomes my wife with her things on. What, lime to go home Well, good night, but for goodness sate, gentlemen don't say I told you about that paint business."
