An editorial paragraph in yesterday's Gazette objected to John E.Lamb's sup posed subserviency to the generally understood wishes of Collector Minshall in the matter of locating the government building away from the business center of town and across the street from the residence of the latter gentleman. Mr. Lamb denies explicitly that he did advocate such a location before the meteoric commissioners and in this view of the case our otherwise just and merited strictures were undeserved. It is a pleas* ure tc be able to put Mr. Lamb right on the record. I

Peter C«NMr*s L^f AMrtlii New, pmv. One of Mr. addresses in public was singular!^ clglfeactttistic of the man. It was aelivete^ in the qpen street to a mixsd crowd ot men and hoys, who cheered the. aged philanthropist right lustily in return. It was late one afternoon last fall at Broadway and Hoston street. Peter Cooper's, carriage had come to a sudden stop in front the Revere house one of the traces was broken. The driver labored vainly to repair the damage. The policemen on the corner tried to help him, but with no better success. The street was blocked' and the crowd pressed on impatiently in the hubbub Mr. Cooper opened the door of the carriage and siepped ont to learn what was the matter. The crftwd instantly recognizing him, made room respectfully. He no sooner saw what the trouble was than he called the coaihmar away and, unbuttoning his great coat, fell to work on the broken trace himself. The crowd watched him with increasing interest as he deftly made his hitches and half hitches, and with Only a piece of string and a small wooden stick in a few minutes repaired the trado sufficient tly to allow the carriage to be dtiven On. As he stepped upon the curbstone after finishing his work, Mr. Cooper pdinting to the trace, spoke.kindly to some young men who stood near, explaining to them the advantage of being able to help one* self when there was need. His address was brief,.ana was listened to witn a res. pectful attention, and when the old gentleman stepped in his carriage and closed the door, the crowd cheered and hats were swung in his honor.
