WASAIHGTON, D. C.. Feb. 23 —The cross-examination of Rerdell was resum ed in the Star route trial this morning by In^ersoll. Referring to the interview with Dorsey at Willard'e, the witness said he feft the court room at the request of Dorsey aod went .to the latter's room at the hotel* Doraey loeked the door and charged the witness with going over to the government, but said: "Yon reckon without your host. I have got! you within my grasp aud propose to hold you there. 1 can send you to the peniten- ~, tiary for perjury. 1 have got' those letters and I propose to publish he no I ha it ha I want. I want yon to go and copy it and take it to a notary phblic and swear to it. I can have you arrested before night if I so desire.

Witness was completely crushed supposed he could he prosecuted for perjury in meriting the first affidavit .'

He did as Dorsey desired' and on the day following tho interview gave an affidavit to Dorsey in Boeler's presence. Dorsey wrote in the words—"ana others," ,, then striking a match, he buined the pencil draft of the affidavit.

Death in Riley Towaship Theie were two funerals in Riley township, near Lockport, Thursday. One was of John X. Smith, a farmer living abiut a mile north-east of Lockport, who1 died on Monday. He was a married man and leaves a wife and several children. He was a good citizen and his loss will be felt in the community.

The other was ot Samuel Gibson who lived in Lockport. He leaves a wife and' several children. His disease was typhoid preumonia. There is a great deal of sickness in that vicinity.

In the trial at Lockport yesterday in which George Grosjean, principal of the public school there was charged with assault and battery on one of his pupils, Lee, fourteen years 6ld, the defendant^' was found guilty. Grosjean's attorney" was Thomas A. Foley, of this city. An appeal to the Circuit Court will probably be taken.
