LAKGEST CITY CIRCULATION

SATURDAY. FEBRUARY 24,1883.

FORT VIKCENNCS.

AN EPISODE OF 1778.

BY H. W. TAYLOR.

In the heat of a summer Sunday noon Fresh with the healthy breath of Juue

That waved the canes in the marshy fens That flanked thy saad redout, Vlncennes,

Cooled by the shade of a spreading elm With pipe in hand sat Captain Helm. Jr^

For old Jo Helm and his squad of one'#! That day were Vincennes garrison!

A musket and a sand-scoured spade

As if, like Captain Helm, they knew 'Twas noon of a summer Sunday, too. -wr*Sj High over his head a dirty roll

A

"But, hark thee comrade! thy meal soon

done

I pray thee take thy accordeon,

"••And piny me thy bravest marches yet ••That my logs their stiffness may forget."

•'And draw not the bellows out so farl "As to have no wind at the ilrst of a bar."

A twinkle gleamed in Old Joe's eye As it peeped from its wrinkled corner sly.

A

flitting pucker along the lip '"u That almost let a grim laugb slip. ||TQl

.And lie smartly shouldered his heavy gun As if he said: I must have my Tun.'!?

The accordeon bellow? did puff and blow High over the Wabash's rippled flow.

The thunder-pumpers* from out the marsh Threw in some bass notes loud and harsh.

And the grizzled eaptain stepped in tit^^# To an afr that never was set to rhyme.

Up the river but half a mile, "Were forming inbattlerank and file.

As thoy sprang from wide batteaux and barge A thousand soldiers of English George.

And Governor Hamilton raised his hand •'Hark! these rebels must have a band."

"Of martial music! That speaks, egad! "Of a mightier, force than 1 deemed they bad."

"Another tuhe the J' Bhall presently sing, "Go summon them in the name, of the

single sentry lank and tall With arms at a shoulder paced the wall.

Said Old Jo rising up to his feet '•Comrade 'tis time thou drink and cat."

••And that thy duty be not too hard "The next two hours I shall mount guard.',

"a'

So, close in the edge of the shady wood fi? With horn to his lips the bugler stood.

He stood but stayed both lip and nand For pause in the crash ot the martial band.

But still the screaming accordeon ""i In equal volume roared on and on. ^fj|

But there came a period, by and by. In a burst of musical ccsiasy,

The very nil?hap, in fact, befol That erstwhile the Ciiptaiu did foretell.

Rccklesaly pushed, on along half note ^g| The bellows collapsed with a wheeze in us throat! "They've made an end o' that tunc atstal." The bugler muttered, and blew his blast.

On the semi-wall backing the palisade The qnonO:im sentry "about face" made,

Brought down his piece with soldierly air And fiercely shouted: "Who goes there?"

The an?wer enme w'th hardly a paui •'Fivehundred Indian Ottawas!"

"And if these are not enough, why then "They are led by as many of Englishmen."

Captain Helm fiom his sentry beat Up the river beholds the fleet 'A'"*' it

Then eagerly Governor Hamilton: "If ye will out of the land be gone,',^•»»»

"And in that no blood is spilt thus far A "Ye shall all march out with Honors of WarP^^n^A 3 ffUf fjp "Twas good as a ci: cus to hear Jo laugh As he told how the English General's staff

Foamed and shouted and spurted and dre« Their Hues :u the martial aveuue.

Through which he must march at tay of a drum. .. -.5) The gate swung back: "They ccMel tbey come!'" •WWSf Run in a half spoke murmur low

Down the enemy's lines, aiid out came—Jo!

With sword at "carry "and uniform on And his one man playing the accordeon!

Governer Hamilton loved a joke, Though this was on him he laughing spoke

To his staff, who down from their saddles leant, And pointing to Helm's queer instrument:

-"I've often beard it, but now I know "How much may be done by a vigorous blow!" •HooSlcr name for the Bittern.
