AMERICAN HOMES.
A Righteous Defense of the American 1/ Nationality
Against 81anderous Insinuations Touching the Vices of the Eace.
From the Indianapolis Evening News. He—If he was at the lodge last night, look in his pockets tor theater tickets. It lie saw the other on'- yesterday, there will be a hair or traces of powder on the vest pattern. If he brings home to his wife a "peace-maker" at midnight, he was not '*working on these books." If he thinks fche "ought to visit mother, for she needs rest and'rtcreatiou," it will be found the governess is good-looking.
She—If she dotes on her"dfear Marie," that part ot feminine anatomy, which is the houie of envious jealousy, could it be opened, would be found seething and bubbling. If t-he is at tea-time "tired to dentil, worked hard all day long," she read novel oil the lounge or was at the uiatiuee. If bins is troubled with delicate nerves, r:quirii'g considerable medical attention, tne family physician is a haodswuie man.
This is from an alleged "funny" paper ui-.d we presume is intended to be "fuu." It it were only dismal drivel such as mighl he passed around some select "literary club" for instance ensconced in the scenery of some back room, and appertaining only to the few addressed, or if it were some fireside tf»lc as in the nature ot personal confessions made by soma "lewd fellows of the baser sort" it were not worth the notice, but as a public thing, predicated of "He" and "She" as the typical nian and woman of the time, the representative of nineteenth century civilization and the fmlts of Christianity, it may be worth denial. Like that nasty s-Hig "They all do it" which came out with a smirk, with a crook ot the thumb over the shoulder, with a depraved wink of the eye, and was bawled iu the face of decency, and ot nil things, whatsoever, which were of good repute, so this etretches out its solid inference to smirch manhood ana womanhood everywhere. Translated, it means that husbauds are habitually unfaithful to wived and wive to husbands-a detestable moral atmosphere, such as prevades the most scrofulous ot ''scrofulous French novols on gray paper with blunt type." Who doesn't know its falsehood who might not feel the strain on churcater which a denial of its truth involves
That mere are such cases is true, and that there will be such to the end of time only iaith in the tinal christianizing ot the race can gainsay. And it is also to be said that, in the oldest and "steadiest" portion ot this country, "the land ol steady hubits"—New England-crimes against chastity are increasing in ralio nbove other cuiMt-a and only the other day Dr. Leonard liacon had a paper upon "Polygamy in New England," iu which ho contrasted Uiah and Connecticut, his general proposition being thai the crime was practiced in both places, with this difference, that in Utah it was against the law while in Connecticut it was in compliance with the law, there the legislature distinctly instituting it— meaning then by to so characterize the laws of divorc^ by which with fatal ease Christian wedlock is nullified and moral concubinage or what might be termed "successive polygamy" is i'osterfcd. Grouting for the sake of the case the full truth of this, it is a lesser and lighter thing in every way than that marital infidelity alleged of this land aud people by those wretched paragraphs which that "funny" paper seems to think are so consumedly comical. The thing is not Anglo-Saxon, it is not Teutonic, and the blood of this country is of that strain.1 When the Germans were savages in tents the chastity of their women aad the purity of their marital relations were the wonder of Rome and if one may trace Rome's siu in this regard among the Latin races ot to-day, he must see as plainly the inheritance of the old Germanic virtues among their offspring.
The Saxon was drunkfen, he ttecoarse and he was brutal. If we. hkvfc refined his coarseness and soltened' his-brutality we must admit we bftvd still his drunkeuness. "Americans drink to get drunk" is a common saying. So let it be, but if we acknowledge our vices let us at least maintain «ur virtues and pay off the detestable innuendo of our "tunny" paper with a good touDd denial which conforming to the truth shall give it the lie. This thing does not run in the blood which has filled Americans' veins. We may admit that drunkenness does, that brutality does, as finding its expression in the knock-down blow which is ever ready to supplement a quarrel that blasphemy does, in that preeminent facility in this regard which the Euglish language has. But the moral dry"rot which licenes the detestable expression of the basest animalism, whicb looks with complacency upon the things which our "funny" paper finds tood for jest, have no place among all our sins. We are a people whose heartstones are white. The family with us makes a borne, and oui homes have altars in thera. They are the refuge ot rcpentance and the shield of innocence, not the market for trade in sin. They are the sigaof better things, the moral conservator which comes first before the church, the sure foundation upon which the pillars of the 6tate rest, the earnest of that bettex condition hereafter.
The Busy Burglar.

VIGO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
July Meeting of the Society.
vv\,.
From Wednesday's Dally.
The July meeting of the Horticultural Society was held at Lake Fluvanna yesterday. The weather was delightful, and a large attendance of cheerful faces urrounded the lake.
The first thing on the programme was a feast fit for a king, served as none but the ladies of tha*. society can serve dinner.
The next thing on the programme was the reports of various committees. Mr. Hulman made a most interesting repurt on vegetables, dealing with the fertilizers anil giving the result of some improvements. ifr. Eli Brown made a verbal report on flowers. Mr. B. is a most beautiful and instructive talker. He makes his reports verbally and afterwards writes them in the record book. He commenced bv say ing the subject was too narrow, a flower was but a part of a plant. The Bubject should be plants.
He had in one hand a small boulder in the other a pennyroyal, both of which he had picked upon the grounds.
He then, in most clear and beautiful language, de^criBcd the origin, nature and destiny of the rock, showing il had no organization and no life. He then held np the plant, showed it had life, how it originated from a cell, and that it was to grow and produce more cells and die to go bark to the elements.
At the next meeting he will describe the digestion, respiration, circulation, etc of plants.
Mr. Mark reported en Meteorology, showing the rain full ot June was less than the average lor the last six Junes being less than 0 inches, while last year it was less than 4 in 187i, and 1877, il was 9$ each year.
The other committees, not being prepared with reports, Mr. Mack was requested to describe the city of Alexandria being burnt by the English guns This he proceeded to do, making a diagram on the ground ol the city harbor forts fcc giving descriptions of the people, houses, streets and the cause of the bombardment.
He stated that Alexandria was a growing city, as hundred years ago it had but 5,U()Q or 0,000 population, a great portion of it is built up as well and looks like an American citv.
Prof. Carhart, by request gave two or three most excellent recitations. A more enjoyable nueting has rarely been held.
There will be no meeting in August. The next will be Saturday Sept, 2nd at Mr. Corey Barbour's.
The Terre Haute Literary Club. At meeting lastnight of the Terre Haute Literary Club the following drafted by the Hon Wm. Mack was unanimously adopted us thosentiment of the club on the departure of the Rev. C. It. Henderson
Rev. Charles R. Henderson is about to leave us. He was one ol the original, and always a taithful member." We are gratified to think lliat a distant city has so appreciated the merits of our brother as to call him to a higher end broader field of action. But, with the whole population where he has spent his manhood, we will feel the loss of his exal ted character, his broad theology, proficient scholarship and disinterested philanthropy.
We esteem his membership an honor to our society, and in coming year* will watch with pride his future as he rises higher and higher in his holy calling, ever sustaining the character of the scholarly Christian gentleman."
The society will attend Mr. Henderson's church on Sunday to hear his farewell sermon.
