A MURDERER CONFESSES.
L. G. Duval Confesses to the Murder of George Long and the Burglary*? of the Perry County
Treasury.
1 I
The following special to the Indianapolis Times is of particular interest to Terre Hauteans as Mr. W. A. Jordon, of this place, was treasurer of Perry county at the time the safe was robbed:
Cannelton, June 8.—A curious confession has been made by L. G. Duval, a prisoner in the county jail, in this town. Twenty-two years ago a citizen of Cannelton, named George Long, mysteriously disappeared, and for along time the belief was entertained that he had been murdered, but no clue could be obtained that promised a solution of the mystery. Duval has voluntarily confessed that he murdered Long. He says that be accompanied Long on a barge loaded with coal, and after tbe coal had ljeen sold and Long got the money for it he killed him ana then tied a grate bar to his body and sunk it in the Ohio river. Duval further confesses that he was one of the parties that, several years aeo, burglarized the safe of the treasurer of Perry county, he keeping watch while the safe blowers did their work, and receiving $200 for his services. Many persons believe Duval insane but he tells a very straight story. ..«
Heavy Wheat.
The Gazette has received from Stonefort. Salem Co., Ills., through the courtesy of George A. Hayward, a commercial traveler formerly of this place a sam pie of wheat in that section. There are eighty-two straws each capped with a splendid head of wheat, from a single root. Tbe wheat may be seen at this office. George writes about it as follows:
I was out of this place about one mile to see one of my customers that was cutting wheat, and to give me some idea how the wheat yields in this section he pulled up a bancli and connted the straws that come from one grain of wheat. There were eighty-two. It was such a cariosity to me that I thought I would send it to ou.. I know by so doing that people in 'erre Haute would also see the kind of ftheat raised in Southern Illinois. This was from afield of about sixty acres and the whole field looked the same as this I send you. On returning to town one man told me he had counted one hundred and six straws from one grain. That, the boys say is a whopper. A great many farmers have commenced cutting their wheai. Weather fine and every thing looks good.
