b,omery

gaily eo]id,ther$ being only 2% Totes again&t him oat of a total of 18. Bat this does not measure the exit nl of the discontent with Peirce in Montgomery county. He has, it seems, set up for a boss in a rather offensive manner, and his ticighbors ia that section do not think there is enough of him intellectually to warrant an altitude of that kind. He has proven a sort of disappointment to them in what he has done, and on tie capital oi very small achievements is trying to do altogether too extensive a business in bosship. As a consequence many are lukewarm in their support of bim others are covertly and and a great many actively opposed to him. lie will not run in Montgomery county as lie did the last time.

A great many promises had to be given by him to secure the nomination. One trade was believed to have been made with the Parke county people. Parke had a candidate in the person of James T. Johnson. Peirce got that vote, it is alleged, by a promise to support Johnson next time. This may be pleasing intelligence to tho supporters of Peirce in Warren, Fountain, Clay and Vetmillion, who probably think that their unquestioned fidelity to his fortunes from the start ought to entitle them to tho support of Pierce'd friends the next time for a candidate of their own. Possibly it may strike tbcm ns perfidious on his part to reward their fidelity by trading against them with the leader of a doubtful delegation. But then they may solace themselves with tho reflection that Peirce sold goods he can not possibly de liver. It took a world oC work by him and his friends to secure a broken delegation in the county for himself. lie couldn't begin to get a delegation for any other man lo pay off an old debt of his. The truth is, two years hence he will have to scratch around iike fury to get to be a delegate, and then he will control only It ia own vote, for the delegation will be made up of men as tall as ho is himself.

The Republicans of Vigo county, that is to pay the great bulk and body of them, were ridden over rough shod their wishes ignored and their hard woik for their party in the past made of no accouut. These men feel that Peirco openly, flagrantly, insolently and insultingly betrayed and deeerted them, giving over the control of affairs in Vigo to men who had not borne the heat and burden of the fight as they had done. More than this, he broke his promises to the soldiers and in his dealings with men played a treacherous part. Time works its own revenges, and it will do so again this year.

In Montgomery County Pierce's candidacy has brought on a war between the Times and Star, the two Republican papers, and the Democracy being a uni and having but one paper, the Review, which is a strong and ably conducted journal, the Republican outlook in Montgomery is anything but flattering.

The speech of our townsman J. D. Eorly in nominating Peirce was, in matter and manner, the best in truth it was the only piece of speech making which rose above mediocrity. Peirce's speech was dull and in bad taste, White's, as he described himself in it, that of a fourth rate lawyer, and Johnson's—well his was delivered while the delegates were going out ol the hall and was necassarily disjointed.

Eaily's speech wa3 well delivered aud was a handsome piece of eulogy, though •omewhatd slraine considering his subjectas for example this.

A man thoroughly respected and admired by his colleagues in Congress, a skilled lawyer, not given to clab orate flights ofihetoric, but as has been said ot Morton in debate, "ac athlete trained down to pure muscle," a man revered and loved by his neighbors and friends." *r If.,

The admiration foi44 Peirce by' his colleagues in congress is probably not overwhelming and "revered", we must say, is rather crowding the mourners. Mr. Early was moreover just a little off his historical balance in the following passage:

A man who carried this district for Congress when the district was gerrymandered by a Democratic Legislature to place our party in a minority ot 300 votes, by over 2,300.

But his speech was the event of the con •ention. That there may be no misapprehension concerning the nature of the disaffection toward the "reveed and beloved" Peirce by his neighbors we reproduce an extract from the Crawfordaville 8tar, one ot the. two Republican papers of the placa printed yesterady evening at the conclusion of its article reporting the proceedings of the convention: "In tbe nomination of Mr. Peirce a grave error has been committed. It requites no persona) moralizing on oar part Indeed it cau affect

STAR in no way.

Yet it can be hailed by Republicans of sober sense in Vigo and Montgomery counties in no other light than that of a political calamity. It portends dire things to the Republican county tickets in these counties—hard work and menacing defeat.

To liberty-loving people in general it means a triumph- ol Ring over Right— prostitution of manhood, political degTedation vuk disgrace.

The fight made by the Ring bulldozer their outrageous methods, their assaults

on private ciiizens, in fact th ir "rule or ruin" "policy has driven scores of Republicans fruul tbe sup|xrt ui ivm aud nsQre than *iie man ha# inwardly vowed to oppose him at the polls.

The sameful practices of

Tbe Ring have succeeded in their nefarious and underhand xt-hemes. Let them lay on the led they, are now makir£,

THE tiip lo Crawfordsville yesterday over the Loganaport road revealed agricultural prospects vastly more important and pleasing than Rnytbing that could happen in politics In tlie first place tbe Loeansporl road runs through a magnificent farming country, particularly at this end of it. There is, in fact, no more fer ile and qertajnlv no piD'c tyeaytifu] section of country in Ihe United States than our own Fort Harrison prairie. It was a visiou of beauty yesterday, in the brij-hf, fresh sunlight of ibt early mornin}.', the dew glistening on the wheat and grass, and the deep, rich fo'iage of the woods in thedislance or of occasional trees near ut baud was ut its loveliest. And what a prospect there is for wheat, to be sure. Theie is undoubtedly a very considerable increase of acreagc and there is not bad looking field of wheat on the line between here and Crawfordsville. It war« all good and most of it considerably above the averag .'. And it is past all ordinary chances now of rain or shine or warm or cold. Some of the fields we beginning to turn and in a week wilt be ready for tbat greatest invention of i&e age—the self-binder. All of it will be harvested inside of two weeks. And then fari-well to dear bread. In the midst of a prospect of this kind Peirce or antiPeirce are among tbe small annoyances of life, and they can danee their little reel on the stpgo of life without disturbing the equanimity or vexing the temper of a full stomached and content! people.

A Snake Story.

One of the healthiest snake stories we bave heard for longtime comes to us through tbe telephone, ostensibly from the south end of town but we suspect that the speaker was really in Marshall or Paris. The story is at least fine in conception and challenges admiration tbe boldness of its statements it not belitf for its probability. It is to this efTect,: That Thomas L. Harman, late of southern Missouri, recently killed a rattle snake measuring sixty-eight feet in length, three feet in girth and wearing fifty* four rattles -n the end of his tail. On being told of these immense propor tionsthe reporter expressed some doubt as to the accuracy of measurement in fact, suggested to his informer (feeling security in distance) tbat he was lying to him just, to hear himself lie suggested that he submit it to Col. W«»olsey for revision and addition but he stuck to the original story that it was sixtyeight f»*et long, three feet around the waist and was bom in '28—if each rattle represents a year—and would not abate loot from the length nor a rattle from the tail, not even for the sake of credibility. He killed it with ft gun while it was sunning itse'f on the bank of the river, and on every item of the allegation be was ready to "cross his heart, hoped to die in his tracks and be d—d" if it wasn't every word of it true. Mr. Harman is going to briag the snake to Terre Haute and exhibit it ou the prairie south of town. It will be a drawing card— when he gets it ncre. in

A PROPOSITION hi

By a Man of Varied Experience to Keep the County Records.

THE TERRE HAUTE WEEKLY GAZETTK,

t^e

TEKKE HAUTE, June 8,1882.

To the Editor OAZRTTK: I see by the Express that one James Murphy proposes that if the good people will elect him County Recorder that he will record deeds, etc", at 50 cents each, and claims that this would be a saving to the county of $2,000. Very good. I have a proposition to make to the citizens, tax-pay ere and, voters of Vigo county.

If they will elect me I will obligate myself to turn over to the common school fund all the receipts of the office over and above clerk hire and ORE thousand dollars per year. As the office is worth irom $8,500 to $4,000 per year this would be a saving to the county ofabout $4,000 in the four years term, ana will place the money wnere it will do some good. Will any candidate do as well I think I have some claims on ihe people. I have farmed, driven oxen, split raits, driven Jwrge* on the canal, plead at the bar and been under firet Many eminent men before me h«vndone the same, some of them have been elected to the highett offices in the natioq, but my extreme modesty forb'ds that I should at present aspire to mnv higher office. Trusting that my proposition will meet with favor I am Ac.

Pauley Bro*., of St. Louia, write Commissioner Jordan that they will be ready to begin the cell work on our new county jail on the 15th of June and expect to have it completed by the 35th. The jail will be ready for the reception of those who desire to become inmates by about the 4th of July. It is suggested that a grand free blow out, with refreshments and whiakeys of all kiuda,be given on that day. There is no reason why the general public shouldn't be hilarious over anew boarding house.

AT the annual meeting cf the Indiana Millers Association at Indianapolis yesterday Jos, Pollock, of Vincinnes, and Wm. Strow, of Madison, were appointed a committee to prepare a suitable memorial on the death fo R. L. Thompson.
