ALL ABOUT IT.
That is, the Rose Polytechnic Iastitute
Things Concerning it, Past, Present and Future-
THE BUILDINGS VISITED.
Before another year will have passed, Terro Haute -will be the home of perhaps (lie beht Po'yN chnic school in the world. Everyihii'." is being done to make the school ac .ear perfection as possible. The trustees will not be hampered in "the least by any scarcity of funds, with which to secure this end.
Probably there are 10,000 people in Terre Haute who have never seen the buildings erected for the Institute doubtless, there are at least 30,000 who have never beheld the interior of the'buildings. Ignorance regarding all matters connected with the institution is very nearly as prevalent.
Thursday evening a GAZETTE reporter inspected the buildings, through the kindness of Hon. Wm. Mack, one of the trustees, and Mrs. Pettyjohn, who has charge of
THE
BUI1.D1NO.
The first noticeable feature seen, when looking at the Polytechnic, next to the magnificent building itself, is probably the beautiful grass which completely covers the large ten acre plot surrounding it. ltmakes one wish that he might become young again, simply for the luxury of rolling in the fresh green grass.
The entrance to the Polytechnic is by a broad flight of stone steps, leading to a knoad panelled door which stands in about ten feet from the face of the building.
There are five stories not including the basement. Each story contains two or three large and bsautiful halls, suitable for assembly or lecture rooms. Besides thene, many smaller rooms, smaller only comparatively, are found all through the building. All have high ceilings and are well ventilated. 1IEATED BY STEAM.
Two large boilers for heating the building, are at present situated in the basement. But this summer, a boiler house will be erected north of the main building, and the boilers will be removed. A complete and elaborate system of pipes and radiators lias been carried into every room, heating them easily aud well.
Gas is also supplied. In the center of the third floor A COMMODIOUS 11 ALL is found. It is fitted up with a large stage, wilh ante-rooms attached. Two gallaries at each side, furnish entrances to
THE TOWERS.
These are situated side by side, topping the center of the front part of the building, facing the south. The right hand tower is twenty feet, more or less, higher than its companion, anj is kept locked. From tiie other tower, a magnificent view of the city and vicinity can be had. The Wabash is visible from Ft. Harrison down to the bend s«uth of the city all Terre Haute is spread out panorama-like, before the view of the rash individual who is enterprising enough to climb the numerous and steep stairs leading to the tower. Apropos of tower?, it may be stated here as of interest, that there are only three good points for observing the city from heigth: the Polytechnic, Normal School and Blast Furnace, towers. The former is situated at the extreme northern part of the city the latter at the southern and the Normal tower is in the heart of Terre Haute.
There is but little to be seen in the MACHINE
SHOrS.
Nothing has been done here as yet, towards obtaining machinery. The superintendent is at present employed in the Worcester, Mass., Polytechnic School. He will begin to fit up the shops in a few months. An addition is to be built to the south end of the shops this summer.
FACULTY.
The GAZETTE'S readers are familiar with the fact that Prof. Charles O Thompson has been engaged as President He has been for twelve years President cf the Worcester, Mass., Polytechnic,, and has made it the most successful school of the kind in America. He has had a large business outside of his school work, as an expert, and to induce him to give up his place as president and his private business, the managers pay him $10,000 bonus, and a salary of 4,060 per annum with a good residence. TTie head of the school is to be one of the fir9t educators ia the country. The Board has given him permission to visit Europe in July, and to inspect all of the polytechnic schools from London to Moscow so as to enable him to start this school with every advantage which the world affords.
Some ether professors have been decided upon, but they have not accepted as yet. Prof. Jenkins, who was announced a short time since as one of the faculty, has declined.
NOTES.
The additious at present determined on area boiier house, an addition to the shops, and a chemical laboratory, all of which will be built this summer.
Sam Early. Jr., and Ben McKeen. at present attending the Worchester Polytechnic, of which Prof. Thompson is president, will remove with their preceptor to Terre Haute, when the Rose Polytechnic begins operations.
A clock has been ordered for the right hand tower. The'school will be opened without doubt, next March.
The Board of Trustees are: Josephus Collett, President 8. S. Early, Secretary. Demis Deming, Treasurer. and F. Nippert, R. S. Oox, Gen. Chas. Cruft, Preston Hussey, Prof. W. A. Jones, Wm. Mack and C. R. Peddle.
general education, will be disappointed. Chemistry, and civil and Mechanica\ Engineering, are to be the fundamental branches taught. These will all be well illustrated by work in the laboratory and machine shops.
It will be hard work from seven o'clock A. M. to six at night. The campus, as the gronna surrounding an institution of learning is generally called, is at this place about ten acres in extent. g"he railroads almost encircle the buildin?.
The Board is constantly buying books for a school library. Those already ob tained amount to about six hundred. A valuable /zeological cabinet has also been purchased.
OUR THOMAS.
Response to the Toast of "The Republic,'1 at the Banquet of the Army of the Tennessee, by Hon. T. H-
Nelson.
At the banquet given to The Army of the Tennessee at St. Louis Thursday night Hon. T. II. Nelson responded to the toast "The Republic—-Its spirit, purpose and institutions are the crown jewels ot humanity." His remarks, as we find them in the St. Louis Republican ol yesterday, were as follows:
MK. PRESIDENT AND GENTLEMEN OK THE ARMY OF THE TENNESSEE—Inasmuch as my time is necessarily restricted, as others arc to speak upon this magnificent occasion—the most magnificent of the kind I have witnessed in this country, I shall confine my response to an exceedingly brief statement ot the effect, the moral and political effect, of the success of the arms of the Union in the great war
01'
TO FAIL OR TO SUCCEED.
Thanks to God and the heroism of our soldiers and sailors, and the wisdom ot our statesmen, these questions were settled, as we firmly believe and hope finally and forever. [Cheers.] The lesson taught to the nation by the success of the arms of the Union was significant and progressive. It is felt now, it is felt in all extremities of this country and throughout the world, and will be felt till the last syllable of recorded time. All history demonstrates, gentlemen, that while republican governments are admirably adapted to foreign wars, and foreign war always solidifies and crystallizes public sentiment and party spirit at home, as was the case in the Mexican war yet all Republicans had hitherto
SIGNALLY AND INVARIABLY FAILED For want of inherent power to put down gigantic rebellions. It was reserved for the United States not only to vanquish every foreign foe but to put down the mightiest rebellion ever since the world began, thus demonstrating that after all that government is strongest in which the people rule. Hence it was that the sympathies of the people of those countries of which I have spoken were with us in this great contest, and were cordial and sincere and outspoken.
The speaker said he had the honor at the close of the yar to represent the government of the United States in the beautiful republic of Chili on the southern extremity ot" the continent, and he spoke of the great interest manifested in their great war by the Chilians, and of the warm sympathies with the United States In concluding he 6aid it was his heart's desire and prayer to God that the success which has attended this republic of ours may continue and forever remain a monument of true liberty, wisdom, peace and progress.
At the conclusion of Mr. Nelson's speece the band played "Hail Columbia," and the next toast was announced.
THE judicious use of printer's ink has again proved efficacious in the recovery ot lost money. On Thursday an advertisement appeared in the GAZETTE that a roll of paper money had been lost. Yesterday morning on opening his safe the advertiser found the missing property. His theory is that the money was stolen and the thief stricken with terror and remorse on reading the notice determined to replace it
When the shadows of evening fell and rain clouds darkly lowered over the face of the firmament, the guilty wretch must hayc obtained a key, entered the store, studied out the combinations of two patent locks, carefully unbolted the inner vault and gently deposited the funds, after which, to conceal all traces of guilt the doors were properly secured and the penitent villain songht his unhallowed couch to meditate upon the mutations of life and the wonderful influence exerted by the press.

the rebellion, especially as
they effect our sister republics upon this, continent and I promise you in advance that if my remarks posess uo other merit they will at least have that of brevity. The American rebellion which relieved the colonies from British bondage, for the first time questioned the divine right of kings and taught European monarchs that there was a power behind the throne greater than the throne itself that the voice of the people is indeed the voice »f God. That era of rebellion was inaugurated which resulted in the emancipation of nearly the entire continent from European domination Emulating our example, the Central and South America republics sprang into existence and we, their older sister, ushered them one after another into
THE CHEAT FAMILY OT NATI0K8. As the origin of these republics—the American republics being substantially the same and all modelled upon one system—it was obvious that they must share the same fate, that they must "sink or swim, live or die, survive or perish" together. Hence people of every nation aud kindred tongue, aud representing every system of government, watched and waited with the most intense anxiety the fortunes of the great struggle. Hence it was the ardent wish and prayers of patriots not only of Spanish America, but all over the world, were with the cause ot" the Union. It was not a mere contest lor power upon the one hand and independence upon the other it was not a gener al insurrection, or gigantic rebellion, for the extirpation of the greatest of human evils—slavery—only,|but the armies ot the Union were solving the grandest prcblen ever submitted to human society—whether mankind can be trusted with purely popular govfrnnient whether the people are capable of self-government whether this great experiment of a popular government with Republican institutions was

"MK. B. B. BRUCE of Cleveland, O. Writes: "I felt generally unwell. Not desiring to get into the clutches of some rapacious doctor, I stepped into a drug store and inquired if they had a remedy that would cure anything and everything. The clerk promptly handed mc a bottle of Brown's Iron Bitters. I said, 'is it good for dyspepsia?' He replied 'there's •othing better.' I said, 'my urine isn't just the right color, I guess my kidneys are out of order' 'Just the thing,' said, he, 'for kidney disorders, you will find it strengthens all ports of the body, and very refreshing lo the mental faculties.' Just the thing I want, thought I, and it suited my complaint precisely. I never before believed in 'cure alls,' and now I mi'ke Brown's Iron Bitters the only exception, for I really believe it will relieve any disease that human flesh is heir to."

Gentlemen,—For five years I have been greatly troubled with dandruff, with a se vere itching of the scalp, and hair falling out. I have tried almost every known remedy, all proving worthless.
