-"It is caused by your danger. I doubt my own ability to keep ailent I am not convinced that it is my duty to do so." "What! do you threaten me?" •'No I implore you to do what is light, what id kind!" "You must have discovered something which you consider important evidence against meT Baid the count, approaching his daughter and speaking in a whisper. His eyes had a dangerous gleam in them. Valentine faced him boldly. "You are right I have." "What is this proof? Where did you find it?" •'Do not ask me. It is enough that it is sufficient for the purpose if I wish to use it against you. I ask you again to leave France and clear the innocent." "I want that proof. Give it to me!" He caught her firmly in bis powerful arms his white face was convulsed with pas8ion his words came rapidly, in eager, hissing tones) his hot breath seemed to burn her cheeks. "Give it to me, I say! quickly, or—or I will make you!" "For what—to hide it or destroy it? Never!"

Valentino trembled in his grasp, but her eyes unflinchingly met his. "You will not, you say then, by Heaven, I w^l "You will kill nie, ns you did—Madeleine!" Valentine said, slowly.

The count's arms relaxed, let go their hold, ami, with a cry like that of a wounded animal, he shrank before Valentine's flashing eyes. She caught his arm, speaking passionately: "Well, do it! kill me if you will it would be more merciful than to let me live wilh this Eccret to hide from the world." "I will not let you brave me," cried the count, repainin^ courage as Valentine faltered. "You are my daughter—you shall obey give me what you have!" ••Yes, I am your wretched daughter, made so by your crime. Why do you hesitate? Once before a helpless woman stood between you and your heart's desire

With a yell, the count sprang upon her, and caught her by the throat, but her sharp cry was echoed-from .the doorway. As the duko and the duchess entered the room the count released his daughter, and cowering away, sank into an casy-chair and covered his face with his hands.

Valentine tottered toward the duchess, and fell, nearly fainting, in her arms. The astonished duke looked from father to daughter, as if at a loss for words. "What does this mean?" he at length asked the still trembling count. "I am sorry that you should discover us in such an embarrassing situation," stammered tho count, with difficulty.— "But—really, my daughter "What is the matter with your daughter? She is white and cold—she trembles like a leaf! I do not understand this!" cried the duchess, indignantly. "Speak, Valentine, speak, my child!"

Valentine stood upright with a great effort, and looked steadily at the count. "Shall I speak, or will you agree to my proposal "Oh, speak if you will, my daughter." The count came quite close, speaking slowly. "Of course, you must do as you think right. I—am only your father." "My father!" Valentine shuddered her siarl led eyes glanced at the three faces confronting her. The count's snakelike gaze seemed to fascinate lier. She put her hand to her head, speaking wildly: "Yes, yes, my father! What did she say? 'I would die, but I would not be tray my father!' Oh, Adricnnc Sho stopped. the duk", (irmly. "I—the fact is, I am as much surprised as you are. The events of the last few days have undoubtedly unsettled my daughter's mind. For the last tive minutes the child has been uttering the most alarming, imjo.-sible accusations and threats. I fear she is mad." "Mad!" cried the duchess, while Valentine stared at the count as if doubting the truth of what her quick perceptions were grasping wit-h fatal accuracy. es, inadame, there can lie no doubt of it. My daughter is mad!" "Mad?" echoed Valentine. "Mad? Oh he says that 1 am mad! mad!"

The last word was a cry of wild despair, and as it rang through the room, Valentine fell insensible to the floor.

The duke raised her and laid her on the sofa the duchess, assisted by the maid, who came running in at the sound of Valentine's voice, quickly applied restoratives. The count walked quickly up and down, avoiding looking at his daughter. "Take him away" whispered the duchess and the duke, understanding her glance, drew the count into an adjoining apartment.

Valentine slowly regained consciousness. Coming out of the long, death-like swoon, she saw the duchess bending anxiously over her. She smiled as she recognized the kind, motherly face, but the next minute shivered and glanced fearfully around her. "He is not here do you wish to see him asked the duchess. "No, no, not now I am not strong enough. Do not let him come." "No I will invite him to come with us to the city. You will try and compose yourself and sleep, my child. You are over-excited and troubled give up thinking, aud rest. I will tell your father that you must not be disturbed." "I shall feel quite well in a little while," Valentine said.

The marquis had listened iu shocked silence. He pressed the hand he held to his lips, and with a low "Trust me," left the crowded room. In a few minutes he was riding rapidly toward Chateau JLa (i ange.

His bright, clear-headed Valentine mad! That, was simyly an absurdity. He had talked to her within twenty four hours, aud had left her in the gayest spirits, full of inffrost in the coming presentation to the Duke de Choiseul. What had happened to trouble her? Who had dared to annoy her? The count must have caused this rapid alteration of spirits. With a sudden feeling of terror, the marquis re called a fact that he had tried his utmost to forget. This was, his first impression of Valentine's father. It had been entirely unfavorable now it recurred with added force. [The continuation of this remarkable story can be found in the Weekly aud Saturday issues of the Gazette. Back numbers can be obtained at this office.]

Trunks.

One of the porters o£ the Fifth Avenue Hotel has been talking about trunks to a reporter. He says the secret of handling a trunk safely lies in the knowledge of the fact that the corners are always dovetailed and strongly braced with iron. Let a trunk down on the corner and it's all right. Big trunks are not what porters dread, "it looks tremendous," said this practical philosopher, "to see a man take one of them and trot up to the top story, but you want to remember this all through life: Wherever a woman is concerned, things are bound to be light so when a woman's trunk—and only women have big trunks—comes along, a porter picks it up easily. With a man, though, it's different. Old travelers are apt to carry books, and books are mighty heavy, while a drummer will pack half the stock of a dry goods store iu his trunk, which is usually small, and then make funny remarks when you nearly break your back lifting iu"

Hard Treatment. [Philadelphia News.]

the duchess kissed her. She was qu tioning whether the** would ever meet again.

Fortunately, the duke bad persuaded the count that he had better appear at the i-eception, the minister having been informed of bis presence in the neighborhood.

The duchess entering, reported Valentine much better, but advised leaving her *o obtain rest and sleep. The count, after a slight hesitation, agreed to be advised by the duchess in iegard to visiting his daughter, and soon after he set out alone for the city.

Neither the duke nor his wife felt at ease about Valentine and when Adrienne described her interview with her friend* and the count's anger, they thought it only partly explained the scene they had witnessed. "The man is passionate, and has been away from the societyofladies. He would not intentionally injure his daughter," said the duke. "He must lie something worse than passionate," exclaimed the duchess. "I am positive that he was choking her when we surprised them at that time. Do you know that I consider it dangerous to leave her in his power so completely?" "Oil, you were mistaken, inv dear. What! choke :i delicate, lovely girl—his only child! Why, the man would 1x5 a monster!"

The duchess and Adrienne were not convinced by the duke's explanation. Adrienne began to grow nervous in regard to Valentine's safety, but felt somewhat reassured on perceiving the Count de Mornaase in the crowded receptionroom of the

Hotel de

1

The duchess, with her quick intuition and faith in personal sympathy, thought it but right to let tho Marquis do Calonuo understand tho present state of aflairs at C'lnfeau La Grange.

Perceiving the young man enter the rooms and look about him rapidly in search of the brilliant vision he expected to meet, the duchess quickly sent for him.

The marquis was looking unusually handsome his features were lit tip with a charming smile as he bent over the hand that the duchess held out to him." "I suppose," he said, "you are perfectly happy this afternoon. I just saw Mademoiselle Adrienne leaning on Raoul's arm and smiling at his remarks. I alwayr judge of how you feel by her appearance." "You are right, my dear marquis. Adrienne's face is a very good test of my condition of mind. But you have not mentioned Valentine?" "No, I expected to find her with you. I saw the count in conversation with the Duke de Choiseul a few moments since." "Valentine is not here and I think that if you can leave your duties here without it beinir noticed, you had better go to her. Say nothing to any one. I will tell tho duke if he misses you." "Why, you alarm me! Yesterday I saw her. She is well?" "Do not look so worried. I cannot enter into explanations without attracting attention, tho very thing I wish to avoid. You must see Valentine before the count sees her again. Something is wrong neither Adrienne nor I could wfn her confidence. You understand me? Try what you can do." "But when did this happen "Since morning she was dressed to come here. It is inexplicable to me. The duke not suspicious, but I fear something very terrible. The count was quite ready to pronounce her mad, but Valentine is not inclined to lose her senses. I loft her quitu weak, but perfectly sensible. Lose no time."
