RESOLVED,

THE TERRE HAUTE WEEKLY GAZETTE.

A VOICE ON THE VETO.

Whose Lightning Will Strike a Fear* fulBlowin'84-

SAW

FaAircisco, April 7.—-The Oregon Democratic convention adopted resolu tions demanding legislative regulation of railroad tariff, reform, attributing the assassination of Garfield to the Republican spoils system, denouncing polygamy, favoring the repeal of the navigation laws and demanding that the congressional delegation do the utmost te secure an appropriation for the Oregon river and harbor improvement. The resolution on the Chinese question is as follows:

That the President's veto of

the Chinese immigration bill is a public misfortune. It sets a degrading mark of competition with the coolies from China upon the labor and working men of America it treats with contemptuous derision the unanimous protests and appeals of the entire Pacific coast. On behalf of the people ot Oregon we disapprove, condemn and declare it to be the duty of every citizen, regardless of party to express his disapproval with his vote as well as with his voice.

The ticket is completed as follows: Secretary of State, J. K. Weathersford Treasurer, H. Abraham Superintendent of Instruction, W. H. Worthington State Printer, Wilbur Cornell Jupreme Judge, Eden Shattuck.

Jos. S. Smith is the nominee for Governor and Wm. D. Fenton for Congressman. VJ

SAN FRAHCISCO,

Commissioner Swift, now in Sacramento, publishes a card in regard to the recent interview with him published in the San Francisco Call, which he says was not correct in making him say, the commissioners discussed and agreed on any limit of time of suspension of immigration What he did say was, "It was distinctly agreed that what might be the necessary time, whether ten or fifty years, to correct the evil, the United States was to be the sole and only judge, and the Chinese government, as he understood it, relied upon the government of the United States not to take more time than was necessary to accomplish the desired result and in his opinion thirtythree years would have been satisfactory to the authorities at Pekin.

OLD MAN BENDER.

The Kansas Butcher Thought to Have Been Captured.

ST. LOUIS,

April 6.—Police authorities

here believe they have at last captured old man Bender, the Kansas butcher. The arrest was made last Tuesday afternoon, but the police have kept the affair sccret. The circumstances of the arrest are as follows: Herman H. Green, a German who resides in this city, was formerly a private in the Sixth United States Infantry and in 1871 was stationed at Osage Station, Kansas, seven miles from where John Bender and family resided. He saw Bender several times every week as the latter brought his vegetables to the camp to sell, and knew him well. Last Monday he saw three men in a skiff on the river in North St. Louis, one of whom he declared to te John Bender. The police were informed and the men were arrested. Two of them gave the names of August Kloots and Charles Hammond. The man supposed to be Bender gave his name as John Bailis. His two companions stated that they lived in Osage Co. Mo had come down the river intending to go to Arkansas that they met the old man who called himself Bailis a few weeks ago and he wanted to accompany them and finally they consented. Kloots and Hammond were njlwwei and Bailis has been held in confinement since. Green is a man of good character and antecedents and police believe his statement. Developments are expected.

THK AMERIOAM SUSPECTS NOT LIBERATED. LONDON, April 6.—The Times' Dublin special says: The report that the IrishAmerican saspects have been liberated on condition that they quit the country, except two or three who refused to accept the conditions, is unfounded. About six ef the suspects who are naturalized citizens of the United States have been released within the last three weeks, but only on the same grounds as were the others who were liberated. Their citizenship is entirely unconnected with their release, the executive holding that all persons resident in Ireland are liable to British law and are to be treated as British subjects. Among those of this class who were released was Boyton, who was liberated on account of ill health. There are only four suspeets of the same class now imprisoned.
