JOANITA.

BY ALFRED T9VNGE.

A slight, graceful form of medium height, a rich brown complexion, deeply tinted cheeks like the velvet leaves of a damask rose, wavy hair of the color of the raven's wing, and black eyes that scintillated with suppressed mirth and fire that was Juanita.

It was high noon and the girl lay at full length upon the soft, warm sward, just as the beautiful Magdalene in the picture lies, only Juanita held a simple daisy between her brown fingers and was counting off its snowy petals with feverish eagerness.

At last the only remaining leaf fluttered away and she threw the goldencrowned stamen after it in disgust. "You foolish flower!" she cried passionately, "what can you know about his love! You nonsensical thing, how dare you you tell me that he loves me not? What a goose I am to be sure!"

And she burst into one of her peals of laughter that sounded like a chime of silver bells, butthis time the laugh was hollow and mirthless, and the black eyes flashed viciously as though at a glance they sought to annihilate the whole species of daises.

Ere the last echo of this laugh died away a voice, a gay, manly voice, came from among the foliage. "Well done, Nita! Are you practicing for the mad-scene in 'Romeo and Juliet,' or do you propose to debut in opera and treat us to one of Lucia's crazy cackles?" "I presume I enn smile without ask ing your permission, Mr. Leonard Murray she said pettishly. "Smile!" echoed the young gentleman, and then he treated that woodland glade to a genuine peal of careless laughter that set the birds singing aDd the brook babbling, until it seemed as though the already bright day had grown brighter.

No wonder Juanita loved that handsome, fascinating fellow few women could have withstood his attractions if he had chosen to display them, and he certainly had been very agreeable to the little Cuban girl all that long summer they had been thrown together, but he had been agreeable to her because—well, because there was really no one else to be agreeable to down in that quiet country place.

He had never uttered a word of love, bat Juanita thought she read enough in hia fine eyes and willingly became his victim.

l'

',

So even now, provoked at his mocking laughter as she was, she could not find it in her heart to be rude to him, and fatally laughed herself.

And then they sat down side by side and he took one of her smooth brown hands in his white ones, *, "Marion has come, Nita," he said presently.

The girl started *and the dark eyes clouded. "Already!" she breathed. -.Wi*.

Leonard Murray glanced at the downcast face. "Of course," he replied,

"you

knew

she was to come to-day." "Yes, I knew it, but I had hoped— yes, I must say it, I hoped something would happen to prevent her coming." "Why, Nita! What do you meanf' "Just what I say. I know I shall hate Marion Dane, and I'm sure she'll spoil mv visit."

The young man looked annoyed, but he said very quietly: "Come and see her you will be sorry for what you have said."

Though Juanita swore inwardly that she should never be sorry, she shook the leaves and mosses from her muslin dresf and went through the sunlit woods at Leonard Murray's side to see Marion Dane.

Juanita disguised hefr iWrsiot Under one of her matchless smiles and Marion was charmed with her. "We shall be the best of friends," Miss Dane said "Leonard has written in every letter about you since you came from Cuba, and I have been very anxious to meet you for I have felt as if I knew you intimately." "Does Mr. Murray write to you often, Miss Dane?" Juanita asked. ,. Marion blushed and smiled. "Every other day," she replied.K "Js it necessary that cousins should write so often?" was the next inquiry.

Marion stared in surprise. "Why, my dear," she said, "we are

rather more than cousins, you know we are engaged." hw Eagaged!

No she certainly did not know it but she smiled, and very soon found aa opportunity to escape to her own room.

When she appeared for dinner that night she was perhaps a little paler than usual, and there were dark rings about her luminous eyes, but the smile was upon her lips, though in her heart was registered an oath to put her rival out of her path by fair means, if possible, by foul, if necessary.

The moon was at the full that night, and the first time ai-.ce she became the ward of Mrs. rray #he found herself deserted the loven had wandered away do one knew whither, and Juanita was alone.

For a time she lingered at Mrs. Murray's side upon the piazza, but finally sauntered away towards the ravine, in the depths of which the little brook babbled away down past her favorite nook.

As she stood upon the brink she could see the rustic bridge above—a pretty, graceful, good-for-nothing, which had long ago been condemned as unsafe, but which had been left there as an ornament.

She looked at it and smiled grimly, and then turned slowly away, and had retired for the night when the lovers returned from their stroll and inquired for her.

To Juanita's surprise, next morning she found that Leonard Murray had taken the early train for the city before she was up consequently Marion was at her disposal for the entire morning. "Shall we walk?" Miss Dane asked.

Juanita hesitated. "Where do you wish to go?" she breathed. "Leonard said you would show me your favorite nook in the ravine," Marion replied.

Juanita grew cold and trembled. "Do you mind crossing a narrow bridge?* she asked. "Why, no," laughed Marion. "Then I will show you the place," was the scarcely audible rejoinder.

So the two sauntered away across the lawn and were soon lost in the shadow of the refreshing woods. "Why are you so silent?" Marion inquired, presently. "I was wondering." "Wondering what?" "Why Mr. Murray went so suddenly tq the city this morning."

Miss Dane blushed until she was transformed from a stately lily to a lovely rose. "Shall I tell you. Juanita, and will you keep the secret?

The Cuban bowed her head, but did not speak she seemed to divine the agony that was in store for her. "Leonard has gone," Marion continued, looking away through the Bun-lit trees, "to ask papa if we may be married on the first of next month."

There was no reply, and when the young lady conquered her emotion sufficiently to glance at her companion, Juanita was tearing a blood-red poppy to pieces, and was apparently unconscious of her surroundings.

At last they reached the fatal bridge, and Juanita paused and leaned against the rail, overcome with the tempest of emotion within her.

At the same instant Marion advanced and was about to pass her and enter upon the doomed passage when Juanita suddenly rallied and caught her arm. "Stop!" she panted.

Marion turned and gazed at her in silent amazement. 'f j' "Answer me one Question," the girl breathed "do you love Leonard Mur-

T*yf"

"As my life, Juanita." ^Jt "And he loves your "I am sure of it." ,-,f* W -'btH

What if you were to be separated?" "We would sooner die." Marion Dane has since said that she bever saw such a transformation in any face aa in that of Juanita.

It waa as though the gates of Heaven had been suddenly thrown open and the holy effulgence from within had rested upon the features of the poor little orphan.

And while that beautiful light was there Juanita caught her hands and kissed them, and with murmured "God bless you," she sprang upon the bridge. {^Marion, utterly mystified, was about to follow her, when—crash! Down went the frail rustic work, carrying with it the doomed girl.

That night Leonard Murray returned, joyous from his successful mission, to find his little friend lying in her chamber mangled past recognition, and Marion unconscious from the awful shock.

Three months later they were made man and wife, and to-day their first-born is named uanita in memory of one whose heroism, they never knew, but whose grace and loveliness will ever be an agreeable reminiscence.
