As they wander ihrcugh the graates Of the fresh and dewy pasture*, -sy Of the tangled forest-pane* I can track them as they wander
By the trail of morning-glories I can read their happy footsteps— I can tell tlieir pieasaut stories.
O I know the paths of children Up the hills and down the valleys Rnttercup* and faded daisies
I
Mark their sortie* and their sallies By the buttercups and beeches 1 can mark their resting.places: And I know the mossy brooksides.
And the wide, green, open spaces.
Where the wild white plum-tree blossoms Where t+ie grapevine swings and losses Where the plumes of scarlet sumac
Toss among the wayside mosses Where the golden-rod in Autumn Flaines among the ha^el-btishes— There the trooping army wanders
There the scouting party pushes.
O but they are kinjr* and nobles As they wander there together Cloth-of-gold is alt the common
To their feet in Summer weather Up and down, in field and woodland. I can see their glowing faces And by scarlet leaves and berries 1 can mark their restinx-places.

THE DANGER SIGNAL.
BY MEDIAL1SA.
"You cannot do it," said Meca'nas-, "I'm sure they will not consent. And," he added, taking base advantage of my sensibility to remark, "if I were you I'd sit down, and not wriggle. You don't know how satirically Gov. ia watching you."
Now, 1 had no fear of the regard of that mild countenance across the airfle, and I resented this duplicity of Mecajnas. ''If you don't ga and bring hither the conductor," I threatened, "I will go to him myself—yonder among all those men—and ask him."
Mecu'iias—I think the trait is common to most men—dislikes to be made conspicuous, and he knows my pertinacity. A moment later the strong, square face of the conductotf bent over me, as I preferred my request with an artistic admixture of appeal and assurance. This artfulmw was rewarded at the next station he came back to the platform where I perched, breathless with suspense. "The engineer says you may come."
Tauntingly, then. I protruded my chin at Meeienas. '•Now! You see all men have not your obduracy."
Mecauias sighed. "Ah, welll 'Being so very willful, you must go.' It was with no commonplace sensation that I shadowed my guide through the mictocosmic life of the platform, hustled by a varied throng. Here stalked tailor sturdy prospectors, rough-bearded, rough-clad, equipped in all the pioneer paraphernalia of the section here towered the stately form ami grand gray head and rever-
of a man I had often marked ed. From the ehoas of this crowd, and the babel of their voices, the conductor swung me up to the engine. '•llere is the young lady who wants to try the cab."
With a prompt, business like air, the engineer lifted me to the cushioned ledge where he had been leaning, tucked my scant skirts beyonrl reach of the great shining lever of the air-brakes, showed me how t.o brace myself, rang the warning bell, blew off the prescribed amount of water, and sped his engine forward.
To me that was a wild, weird ride. The sun shone in at the open cab windows, but the wind blew cold from a snow-clad range at the right. Section men along the line—grimy, stern-faced Caucasians and stolid coolies—leaned on their picks to gaze in wonder at a woman's face looking on them from such unwonted masculine .surroundings, as we flew past. Forward, forward sped the engine along the ringing rails, fairly bounding over long, straight stretches, panting up heavy grades, reeling, swaying inward, as the incline of the road fought the centrifugal force around short, sharp bends.
The dismal surroundings horrified me I trembled that the great monster I mounted should go careering on, apparently unguided. I wanted to know how it dominated—to see the hand of man on the curb of the insensate creature. I leaued out of the window and spoke back to the engineer standing on the tender. "Come and stand by me I am afraid." He smiled, indulgent to weakness, as strong men are, and came in at once. He taught me the trick of the throttle, fearned me the Jo?*- of the lever, and showed me the secure index of the waterguage, where the aerated, milky iluid rau up and down the tube, with our motion.
Suddenly I clinched his broad shoulder with a nervous band. I'That man on the track! You will run him down!"
But his hand was already on the bellrnpe. "That is a track-walker. Do you see bis red flag? They are stationed all along here every five to fifteeiv jnilpa. He will leave in good timet «f 4The man, but a few rods away, stepping from tie to tie between the rails,

THE TERSE HAUTE 'WBBKLY GAZETTE.
I am t|p fl#»f g^e« way, sgpat of wind swirled in and swept my skirta back from the Tow siboe» and scar-' let hose that matched all the rest of a rather masculine costume. In despite of himself the engineer smiled at my consternation. Correctness of detail is my pride and weakness. "Let me tell you a story," he said. "It can hardly seem impertinent now that we have laughed together. Before the junction of these roads I was running between N and he uamed two stations on the eastern line. "Lacy, the station-man at Austin, had a daughter, a half-grown girl, wild as an antelope. Austin was no place at all, just the station-house, in part of which
Lacy's family lived, and we never stopped there unless signaled. It was only four miles out of Las Milpas, and Lacy daughter walked daily to the pueblo to school and back. We passed Austin between 4 an 5 in the afternoon, and I used to meet Marcia trudging along the ties homeward. Sometimes she would bring my heart to my throat by keeping to the track till I thought she must be caught sure. But she always escaped just in time, and stood mocking at us like an imp, swinging her arms and whirling about like a mad creature. I spoke to her father about the risk she ran, but he seemed to have no control over her. I suppose it waa the solitude of her home that made her so wild. "One day a 'hot-box' had delayed us, and wo were tearing along at unusual tipeed, making up time. Front the moment we flashed past Austin I was on the watch for Marcia, fearing she'd be caught if she should be careless or slower than usual. About half a mile beyond the station, on a long down-grade, 1 saw her faraway, just a mere speck on the sand, and, as well as I could judge at the distance, all of a heap on the ground. 1 slowed up, fearing something had befallen the girl. As we came tolerably near she jumped to her feet and began waving a red flag that had the singular appearance of being in two long, narrow pieces. That wa3 enough to stop the train no man would be reckless enough to disregard that signal, even front such a mad piece as Marcia. I left the engine to Joe, and ran to tho girl. The conductor had reached her already, afd held her where she stood, a brave liLtle woman as ever lived, hot, exhausted, dirty and barefoot. 'The rustlers have chopped the trusties down in Riley's cut,' she gasped. 'Them timbers is weakened enough to wreck 40,000 trains, and 1 kuowed yo' couldn't see it from above and yo' behind time, and comin' fast and I run and run to tell daddy in time and when I see yo'. I no wed it wasn't no use to make signs at you', cause I'm always a-doiu' some fool caper. Iiut the flag was sure to fetch vo', and *o I just pulled of my red stockin's and buck 'em out and liyer yo' are, O. K.!" l'alk about fainting as a consequence of uver-reiiuement, delicate rearing and hereditary exhaustion of nerve tension! That child panted through her explanation, and then fell back in a swoon, as naturally as if she had been a princess. And now, miss, you see why I admire cardinal stockings," said the engineer.
Oddly enough, the speech did not impress me as impertinent. .V..XJ»V
Story ol tl»o Tnmato.ul A Pennsylvanian says: A good man years ago a man who had recently arrived from the Bermuda Islands was sent to York County (Pa.) Jail for some offense committed against the laws of the Commonwealth. He had with him a few seeds which ho planted in the rich soil oI the jail yard.
Beforo the plants which sprang from the seeds reached maturity he was discharged, and no otic knew the nature of them! They grew luxuriantly, bearing fruit of a large size and unusal nppearnnce. As this strange fruit ripened its color changed from green to a brilliant red, and became an object of wonder and admiration to all the inmates of the jail. Mrs. Klinefelter, the lady keeper, cautioned all the prisoners against eating any of the fruit, as she was sure it was poisonous, and besides planted the seeds, as she would endeavor to preserve specimena ci it for him should he return in time.
Just when the fruit was fully matured the Bermuda prisoner revisited the jail and asked to see thv plant. This request granted, he next called for pepper, salt and vinegar, and to the horror of the good lady cominencedtto cat of the supposed poisonous fruit with a relish thnt astonished the beholders. Afler enjoying the strange repast, he informed Mrs. K. that the fruit or vegetable wn* the tomato, or love apple, and it would be fouud wholesome and nutritious. •The t-eeds of the remaining tomatoes, were carefully preserved and distributed among tlie friends and neighbors of the lady, and thus this new popular esculent was introduced into the ancient and goodly borough of York. For many years thereafter it was cultivated as an ornament rather than for table use, but by degrees its merits began to be more fully understood and appreciated, and ther»»f aft elsewhere, it grew into general public favor._ .*
