Certain persons, out of a knowledge of ihe superior wickedness of the Prairie City, conceived the notion of establishing, a Detective Agency here, with the expectation of au abundance of employment. About month ag.i, Constables Flaid and and McMahan, who have had considerable of experience in this line, organized an association, lo be called the Hawkeye Detective Ageucy," with the central office in Uiis cily. Corkliill slated that on belislt of the prostcution he would withdraw all ob jectiou to Guiteau's addressing the jury, that this trial bad been long *nd expensive, and he didn't desire ta give any opportunity lor objection# upon wnicli to found a demand for a new trial.

Reed, with some vehemence, maintained that the Disliict Attorney had no right to attempt to influence the jury by such un imputation as be had just made.

Guiteuu— I appreciate this unexpected courtesy of Corkbill's, and I don't vholly agree with Reed, your Houor.

Judge Ccx stated that he had decided to allow the prisoner to speak. Davioge, who had just come in, inquired: "Is the prisoner to speak, your Honor? If so I wonld like to inquire about how much time he will occupy.

Guiteau—I shall deliver lo the jury *mv speech which has been 'published in all the newspapers.

Davidge—I have notseen it. Guiteau—Well, then, 1 would advise you to got it at once and read it. I shall want about two hours, your Honor. I speak rapidly.

iJ

As Cuiteau was not prepared to speak to-day the court adjourned till to-morrow. Davidge stilted that Judge Porter is in quite feeble health, and will probablv be unable to speak before Monday, it is probable, therefore, that the court will adjourn at noon lo-morrow until Monday.

TUB I'ROCKKDINOS.

WABHIROTOS,

Jan. 21.—Upon entering

the court room this morning Guiteau took a seat in the witness box, remarking as tie laid out his pupers, "I sit down because I can speak better, not that I am airs id of being shot. This shooting business is getting plnved out." At an intimation from Judge Cox the prisoner carefully arranged his glasses and with a flourish began to read from manuscript, as follows: "The prosecution pretend that I am a wicked man. Mr. Scovlllc and the rest think I am a lunatic, and I presume \ou think I am. I certaiuly was a lunitic on July 2d when I fired on the President and the American people generally, and I presume you think/1 was. Can you imagine anything®'4 more*- insane than my going to that depot and shooting the President of the United States you are hereto say whether I was sane or insaneat the moment I fired that shot. You have nothing to do wi'h my condition betore or since that shot was fired. You must say by your verdict sane or insane at the moment the shot was tired. If you have any doubt of my sanity at the moment y«u must give me the benefit, of that doubt and acquit. That is if y-i) have any doubt whether I fired Jhat shot or was the aent of ihe Deity. If I find on my own uccount I was sane If I fired it supposing myself the agent ot the Deity I was insane and you must acquit. This is the law as given in the recent decision of the New York Court of 'Appeals. It revolutionizes the old rules and i9 a grand fitep forward in the law of insanity. It is worihy of this age of railroads, electricity and telephones and it well comes from the progressive state of New York. I have no hesitation in saying that it is a special providence in my favor and I ask this court and jury »o to consider it Some eminent people of America think me the greatest man of this age and this feeling is growing. They befitve in my inspiration and that providence and I have really saved the nation from another war. My'speech settling forth in detail my defense was telegraphed to all the leading pipers and published Monday morning and now I am permitted by his Honor to deliver It to you."

he reached that point in his speech, "I have always served the Lord, and whether I live or die—" he broke down completely, stopped and tried to ehoke down the rising lump in his throat, but found it impossible to keep back a genuine sob. Taking out his handkerchief he buried his face in it a few seconds, wiped his eyes and with a determined effort started on again. He seemed to recover his composure so quickly that some *omc believed the whole efToit was manufactured. His sister, Mrs Scoville, however, apparently thought otherwise. She was deeply affected and wept and sobbed bitterly for some moments. Alter this incident Guiteau continued lo read, occasionally adding brief comments upon the text. As he proceeded with the reading all appearance of nervousness gradually wore of!', and wi'h the utmost composure and an unction that bordered upon the ludicrous the prisoner read on, with an attempt at every conceivable form of oratorical, rhetorical and dramatic effect. His description of the taking off of the President wa9 given with striking effect.
