AGNUS- RKI'PUEU.

It

WAS only an hour and a half'T journey and the day, for June, was cool and pleasant. I had a magazine and the morning paper with which to refresh my wearied spirits, and on the whole I expected to SVijoy my ride extremely, but I was mistaken. Just before the train started, Dick, whom I fancied hnlf-way down to his office by that time, came rushing back, bringing with him an unknown man, with large side-whiskers and pale blue eyes. "The most fortunate thing in the world, Nan," he said "I have just discovered that Mr. Muzzle is bound for your destination, too, and he will be delighted0 to take charge of you and see you safely home." Thereupon he introduced me to Mr. Muzzle, who said he would be delighted, and the train beginning to move Dick had barely time to jump off, waving me an adieu through the car window as he stood outside, with an expression of suppressed amusement on his face, which I noticed at the time, but only understood later.

Now, I did not think I stood in'need of protection for a short ride, and I have always preferred being left to my own devices when traveling, but I decided to offer the newspaper amiably to my companion and keep the magazine, and flattered myself that it would not make much difference after all. Vain delusion! We had hardly cleared the depot, when I observed Mr. Muzzle endeavoriug quite frantically to attract the attention of a very sour-looking old gentleman on the other side of the car. The old gentleman at last becoming aware of these maneuvers, looked, I thought, sourer than ever and touched his hat glumly in answer to the other's good morning.'FFFWHAT a relieved expression, Mr. Muzzle sank back on his cushions and turned to me. &, "That is Mr. Brokonoff," lie' said, "John Thomas Brokonoff Do you know him at all?"

I said I didn't and felt inwardly grateful thafsuch was the case. "Broker on Wall street lives outside of the city very influential man, indeed. He married one of the General Gibbert's

ought to know them "It was one of those Gibbert girls, the youngest, I believer-no, she married young Scrubbs it must have been the older. Now that I have come to think of it, it was not one of that family at all, but their cousin, Adelina Gibbert, of St. Louis, who ran off with that good-for-nothing Dumfries Diddlebirt. He drank himself to dfeath a year after their marriage. I dare say you hare heard of him."

I had not, but kept my humiliating ignorance to myself. "Poor Dumfries! I used to know him right well good-hearted fellow as ever lived but not much brains. They tell a story of him down at—but here the locomotive whistle gave a long, agonized screech and I missed the next sentence. When the whistle stopped my companion was still talking and had evidently reached the middle of lis anecdote. Having:lost the begir jiing, it did not seem worth while to listen to the end, so I took a mental survey of my position. We had been just about ten minutes, so far, in the cars. Was it possible that th% next hour and a quarter were to be filled up in this way? I thought the train had never been so noisy before. Through the open window the rambling of the wheels almost entirely drowned Mr. Muzzle's voice, though was conscious he was absolutely screaming at me in his anxiety that I should hear. Suddenly he paused. There was an inters rogative look in his pale blue eyes. He must have asked me a question*

but what could it have been? With some embarrassment I screamed back that I had not heard him. "I asked you if you thought he was called on to t8ke it under the circumstances?" he repeated. "No, indeed," I hazarded, and instantly perceived my reply

was a wrong

morning

paper?" handing it to him as I spoke, and picking up my magazine at the same time.

He seemed a little surprised, but took the sheet, thanked me, and turned directly to the list of marriages and deaths. "Ah!" he murmured, "Smith, Bobson, Newcastle must be some relation to old John Newcastle, I fancy. He used to live in that part

He seemed so much concerned that I asked him If she had beon a friend of his. "Oh, no, not particularly," he replied "in fact,Inever saw her but once but his first wife was a sister of a very old acquaintance of mine. Browns, and the match was a very unexpected one, indeed. Took both families by surprise, I reihember, when the news came."t*5A Y*J

By this time I had closed my**magazine and reconciled myself.to fate. It would have been ust the same if I had not given him the paper.

He would

distantly related to the fourth

cousin of some one he knew, or we would have stopped at a station where somebody lived Whom he used to meet at somebody else's house and about whom there would be plenty to be told. As well hear of Todkins Billingby's first wife as anyone else, but what could Dick have meant by burdening me in this manner? -$

After that I attempted no further distraction. We went smoothly through the Billirgbys and Smithkins, with a slight digression into the family history of the Browns and the cars rumbled, and the whistle screeched, and Mr. Muzzle grew quite purple in the face with his well intentioned effort to amuse me. Then an incident he related about the Smithkins put him in mind of the Tumbledowns, whose entire family tree he furnished me with before he came to the anecdote itself, and in this way the hour and a half went blithely by.

When I had finally seen the last of Mr. Muzzle and had reached home, feeling as limp as if I had traveled three hundred miles, instead of thirty, I found a telegram awaiting me, which I tore open in some alarm. It was briefly worded, as follows: ~,]Viva Voce! RICHARD.

K:.'$
