VIENNA, 0:30 P. M., Dec. 8—Ring Theater, formerly the Comic Opera House, where Sara Bernhardt recently performed, tcok fire at 7 o'clock to-night, just before the beginning of the opera, "Les Contes De Hoffman." The fire was caused by the fall of a lamp on the stage. The house was tolerably full and loss of life is great. Up to the present time seventy bodies have been recovered. Many persons were injured. Sixty were saved by means oi ladders and by jumping into clothes held below. The Freatest efforts were made to save life. The scene was terrible, the flames shooting up through the roof and eventually gutting the entire building.

TRAMPLED TO DEATII.

LONDON, Dec. 8.—A Vienna dispatch says: It is estimated the audience in the thea'.re numbered 2,000. Many persons were trampled to death in the panic which ensued. As soon as the fire was seen there was an explosion of gas, and the audience were plunged in darkness.' 11 p. M.—One hundred and forty-five bodies have been brought out of the Theatre dead. Many bodies were consumed in the galleries and other elevated parts of the building. The chief cause of the catastrophe was that in the confusion he iron portion separating the stage from he auditorium was not lowered. Thousands of people assembled in the neighboring streets where they could hear the cries of agony of the people at the windows of the Theatre praying to be saved The rapidity of the flames prevented the people from taking advantage of the ordinary exists. Only a small portion of the audience saved themselves by leaping from the windows, three stories high, into clotns held below.

THREE HUNDRED PERISH.

At midnight the taking out of bodies from the Theatre continued. It is estimated that 300 persons perished. Some bodies arc fearfully disfigured Several persons were injured in springing from the windows of the Theatre. Among the missing are Herr Fife, Court Musical Director, and Herr Helmersperger. Most of the bodies indentified up to the present time are those of tradesmen and minor officials. On the spreading of the news of the disaster the performances at other Theaters stopped.

THE LATEST NEWS THE WORST. LONDON, Dec. 9.—A later telegram from Vienna, dated this morning, says: Two hundred and seventy bodies have been recovered from the ruins of the Ring theatre. The fourth gallery has not yet been explored. It is believed that not a single person escaped from that gallery and thai very few escaped from the third gallery. The corpses last recovered are little more than charred fragments. Gross neglect is charged against the management of the theatre. The law prescribes the use of oil lamps in corridors of theatres, so that scats shall be discernible in the event of the failure of gas, but this precaution was utterly neglected. The person in charge of the iron curtain between the stage and auditorium appears to have fled at the first alarm.

A GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION.

VIENNA, December 9.—The Vienna Allegemein Zeitung, whose offices are ex* actly opposite the ill-fated Ring Theater, gives a graphic account of the catastrophe, of which the following is an extract: "We write with death in oar hearts, unable to find words to describe the pain which we feel. A terrible calamity has befallen our city. The Ring Theater, formerly known the Opera Comique, is in ashes, and hundreds of huoaRm beings are victims of the catastrophe. Nothing like thin horror has ever occurred before in this city. At 10 minutes before*7 o'clock the fire broke out. The theater was pretty well filled, but happily not. entirely crowded. A considerable number of people were still in the foyer and dressing rooms, and a dense mass of carriages occupied the Schalten Ring. It had just commenced to snow, and in the auditorium ot the theatre there was the usual bustle before the commencement of the performance. People were walking up and down, looking for their places, and the noise of the turning down of seats was heard on all hides. The boxes were still empty, but the balcony and galleries were well filled. On the stage everything was in a state of activity and bustle—workingtnen removing the scenery, etc. Offenbach's oouiic opera, "Les Contes de Hoffmann," was to be performed for the second time. 8ome of the lingers and actors were in their places the stage in costume a large number of them, however, were stall in the dressing rooms in the hands of the coetumers and hair dressers. The overture bad not yet begun.

The Fire Caused by a Lamp falling on the Stage—Many of the Dead Identified.

VTXNNA,

THE TERRE HAUTE WEEKLY GAZETTE.

version the scenery was ignited by a park from the electric machinery accoiding to another, a woikman with an alcohol lamp caused the disaster. The former is the moat likely one. Director Helmes Berger, who stood upon the stage, was the first one to notice the fire. In a moment after, the flies were wrapped in flames, snd the net work of wood, ropes and canvass was burned like tinder. The people on the stage were 8TUPEFIED WITH fear as first, and they speedily took to flight in most terrible ^confusion, towards the ladies'dressing rooms, on the left of the stage, wbere a small staircase led to Hohenstanflog Strasse. In a moment the curtain flew up and the draft blew it hither and thither, until, like a fiery tongue, it darted back and forth from the auditorinm to the stage. The fire became master of the Ring Theater.

FIRE! FIRE!

J'*

"The Ring Theatre is on fire!" was the cry that went from mouth to mouth on Ring Strasse. The flames were already bursting through the roof, snd cries sncb as Vienna never heard before, filled the air. They ceemed not like the cries of human beirv, bat such woefal accents as can be hea«l only in a death struggle.

15

THE SCETFE WAS INDESCRIBABLE. ||i|| Ail those inside the fated buifding were pushing their way toward the *treet, which was crowded at all points. The audience crushed each other in the peristyle and foyer.

CONFUSION RELGNEFR Stfr'REME. Suddenly cries were heard from the windows of the theatre leadiog to the Ring. The balcony over the entrance was soon emptied, and the cries of thrse at the wiudows and of those from within the theatre were awful, and swelled louder and louder. The mass of people in the streets was growing denser constantly.

All the Kyrniog papers published long, heartrenderfng accounts of the calamity. MoBt of them place

THE NUMBER OF DEAD

at 300, but with the persons who were on the fourth gallery, yet to hear from, the nun^er will be swelled to 500 at least. E^en the police seem reluctant to speak of the extent of the disaster in the upper gallery, and neither firemen nor soldiers have yet dared to penetrate to the dreadful scene. Firemen who bad assisted in

BRINGING our THE BODIES From the third gallery being asked "how many persons do you think are in the fourth gallerj?'' answered, "two hundred, and possibly 500 who can tell? They are there in thick masses. We shall not know how many are dead until the people of Vienna have sent in their list of missing to the police." The origin of the fire is not yet established to a certainty, but of

THE COWARDICE OF THE FIREMEN on the stage and the attendants who should have let down the iron screen, of the general want of provisions in the event of euch a catastrophe, there remains no doubt.

THE THEATRE ITSELF

"i

was a very handsome edific, as far as the interior was concerned, and was apparently constructed with a view to exaggerate FUcb a catastrophe as that of last night. The Btairs and passage ways were laid out in a strangely complicated manner, so that one needed good knowledge of the place to find his way in and out of the theater. These peculiarities were not^d oh

the day

of the opening of the theater, the 15th of January, 1874, when "11 Barbiere di Seviglia" was performed. These stairways and passage ways last night proved fatal to many who had already escaped the horrors of suffocation inside the auditorium.

1

THE FEELING IN VIENNA.

December 9.—The Lower

House of the Reichsrath adjourned today, at the suggestion of the President, after several sympathetic speeches. The hope was expressed that an ample fund would be raised for the Bofferers by the fire. Ten thousand florins were subscribed on the Bourse this morning, in aid of the families of victims of the theatre .fire, who are probably far more numerous than was at first believed. Business on the Bourse was suspended during the moraing.

WHAT COL. MAPLESON THJNK8. NEW YORK, December 9.—Col. Mapleson, tbe well known opera manager, •aid in connection with the Vienna fire: It is a wonder to me they do not have more euch fires than they do. Certainly five-sixths of the European Theatres are constructed on just such afashion—pocket traps in case of a panic. I have paid much attention all my life to protecting uiy theatres from fire, and whenever I hear of a theatre fire I study the fullest reports to get any hints I can for my own safety. I have each a personal horror of fire, that when I happen to think of fire in most of onr London theatres, it spoils the performance for me, and I usually go home. Some of our best London theatres have been built for the purpose of roasting people. Ground fronting on the street in the center of towh is so valuable that theaten are mostly built inside the block, with tall shops hemming them in on every side, and the only exits are few and through long passages, so that in case of fire in any of the shops lining the passages to the theater the danger to life is just as great as if the theater was on fire, for the panic-stricken audience is just as likely to run into the fire as to go in the opposite direction. When they open the windows or ventilators in those inside London theaters I can feel the bad air creeping in. The Princess, Globe, Opera Comique, Olympic, Criterion, Adelphi, Vaudeville, Royalty, are all such traps, with but two entrances at most, and tho«e through long passages. The Riog Theatre has always occupied a peculiar position among tbe numerous theatres in Vienna. So many managers failed there in succession that it got to be regarded as a sort of managerial tomb, all the more on account of ita furniture and decoration, which were of the moat sombre aodfr uninviting description. It waa accordingly uaed for most miscellaneous purposes, such as exhibitions of hypnotism by Hansen, etc. When Director Jounea, last year took charge, and had it redecorated, a new era of prosperity seemed to begin. Sara Bernhardt gave her recent performances there, which were attended by tbe Emperor and most of the people of

note ia ib» city. Offenbach's l**t opera, by ao ordinary troupe, naturally, did not attract such a select audience. It *eem*, however, that at lea*t one musician of note periahed, (be violinli't and composer. Hell me* Berger, although the telegraph doex nut Plate whether it was the elder or the younger.
