JUDGE WALTER S. COX. PRE8IDIITG AT THE OUITEA.O TRIAL.
The trial in progress direct! attention in a special manner to the learned gentleman who presides thereat. Judge Cox is now and henceforward a historic personage therefore a few notes about him have special interest at the present time.
Judge Walter S. Cox is about forty-five years of age. He was born in the District of Columbia. His prominence as a lawyer dales from the year 1863, and was earned in the courts under the shadow of the Capitol His promotion by President Hayes to a Judgeship in the District Court was a general surprise, the custom having previously been to appoint the incumbents of this honorable position from outside the District of Columbia. Let it be remembered that all President Hayes' prominent apointments were not of Ohio men.
The Judge's family history includes that of an adventurous brother who was, prior to the War of the Rebellion, an officer in the United States Army. Upon the breaking out of ^the war, he deserted and tied to rebel headquarers where lie found responsible employment unner the redoubtable Lee. Another brother has served along time as clerk in the State Department at Washington. He is a gentleman veiy much respected, and physically among the fine-looking men of the Capital. There is no need of saying to persons who own the excellent picture of the Judge, which heads this article, that its subject is another handsome specimen of American ah hood. [The above sketch ot Judge Cox was written by the same parties who made the picture. Where it compliments him it is false. It ought to be said that Judge Cox is largely responsible for the indecent laughter, and the disgraceful confusion and hilarity which has made his court during the Guiteau trial a scoffing and a by-word. He deserves removal from office on the score of incompetency. He seems to be an imbecile, by the conduct he permits in hia court. He is a disgrace to the profession and the American people who are in no mood for joking over the trial of the most lepronsmiscreant in llie land. An inquiry into his sanity ought to be instituted. He may shoot some one and claim to be insane and proove it too better than Guiteau can in his own.case, by the records of his conduct in this trial.]—[ED GAZFTTE

V/. REPORTS CONTRADICTS! Washington Special. WASHINGTON, Nov. 26.—The Star siys: "We learn on the best authority that the report of Secretary Blaine assuming the presidency of the M., K. and T. Railroad Compahy is a mere invention, without a word of truth. Of the same apocryphal character is the rumor that the Secretary intends taking an extended tour in the South after retiring, next month, from the cabinet. Both reports are the crcation of the enterprising and imaginative report er.
THE GARFIELD MEMORIAL SERVICES. Washington Special.
WASHINGTON, November 25.—The programme tor the memorial and eulogistic services over the late President Garfleld has been nearly arranged, and will be exceedingly simple. It has been arrarigtd that eulogistic addresses shall be delivered in the two houses by two representatives and two senators. Senator Sherman will probably be one of the senators ,and Randolph Tucker one of the representatives. Mrs. Harrison Ulazicr, at present in the Interior Department, and frem Bedford, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, and a graduate of Hiram, is at present engaged in writing a poem to be read on that occasion in the House, by Hon. A. R. Pettibone, of the First Tennessee district, and a former Cuyahoga county man, and giaduate of Hiram. Approprate music will be interspersed, and an adjournment out of respect to the memory of the late President will be taken. The memorial exercises will take place as soon after the organization of the House as possible.
The Popular Street Crossing To the Editor of the Gazette: I think it the du'y of our city council and of the county commissioners to take some action in regard to the railroad crossing on Poplar street. Poplar street belongs to the public but th« railroad company uses it nearly constantly, tor switching purposes and are BOW making new Switches. Is Poplar street to be abandoned to accommodate the railroad company. Said street is the only outlet East from the city and South of Main street. The writer in counting his time for business, at ten hours per day loses one half hour each day. By comparing this with' my annual income the one half hour each day costs me at least sixty dollars per annum. I believe the traveling public loses fifty dollars per day by the railroad company's use of the street for switching purposes. The authoraties I think, should require the company to do their switching at some other place.

Which'Raisea the Cry of Fire, and a Genera] Panic Ensues,
In Which Many are Trampled Under Foot and Wounded
NEW ORK, NOV. 15/—'Tlie performnnce in the London Theatre last night was interrupted »by an alarm of fir*, caused by the escape of steam from a broken pipe. A panic ensued, and several persons were injured during the rush toward the avenues ot escape. The theatre, it being Thanksgiving night, was unusually crowded, 2,7o0 tickets being sold, and the gallery especially having been crowded almost to suffocation by the number ot men and boys. A variety actor was singing. At 8:30 an accident occured to the pipe under the gallery. It was caused by boys standing on the heaters to obfain better views of the stage. Their weight caused it to break, and immediately th«re rose a cry of fire and a panic ensued, even the actors fleeing from the stage and the musicians abandoned their instruments. A rush was made for the doors which were broken down, many of the seats were broken, and quite a number of persons severely hurt by falling and being tramped upon, of which the following is a partial list: Joseph F. McCabe, Richard McCarty, Robert Phillips, Edward JPeters, (engineer), B. N. Skinner, Morris Soring and Charles Parker. Skinner was hurt by an actor jumping upon him from the stage, and the engineer was knocked down while turning off the steam and severely crushed So far as known no one was hurt fatally.
After the confusion had prevailed for a time, the steam was turned off. quiet lestored and the performance was resumed.
