THE SPEAKERSHIP. Washington Special.

Washington, Nov.1.—In conversation with your correspondent a leading Western Republican was asked about the Speakership. "Ijt will be a scrub." he answered. "What's that?" "Every fellow for himself, and Satan gets the hindmost." v•' '•Who do you think is ahead "No telling." "Is Keifer strong?" "Less so than his friends think." "Less so than he thinlcs "Yes, for Keifer thinks he's goibg to be elected, but I doubt it." "How about Burrows?" st, "What Burrows?" "Why, the great orator from Michigan. Did you not know he is candidate "Since you mentioned it, I believe I do." "What of his chances?" '5, "He hasn't any." "You seem to dismiss them all?" "Yes, it's a scrub race, and no telling anything about it." "WilHthe fact that Keifer is an Ohio man hurt him "Not now. The charge that Ojiio has more than her share is of less force than formerly. She is out of the White House and out of the Cabinet." "New York is atthe head now, and will not that hurt Hiscock t" "1 think so. New York has the President, two members of the Cabinet, and a Justice ol the Supreme Court. This will hurt Hiscock, for Western members especially will say that New York lias her share." "Has Kasson a showing?" "He's about as strong "as Keifer—no stronger. I tell you it's a scrub race and will be interesting. That's about all we know of it now. j'i «h Supreme Court Decision

Newtomb, Com.—Suit on notes given for the lease and furniture of a hotel. The answer was that the defendants had been induced to make (the purchase by the fraudulent devices and ^presentations of tho plainti fid, at a price^reatly in excess of the value of the property received. The plaintiffs offered to show that a few months after the Sale the| defendants had said, in a conversation, that the hotel was doing well, and clearing a sum which was larger than the plaintiffs had represented their own profits to be. It appeared that before this conversation defendants had made considerable additions to the equipment of the hotel. The circumstances having been thus changed, the offered testimony was not competent for the purpose of showing that if the

{eged,

ilaintiffs made the representations althey were not false. There was no error in refusing to submit to the jury one ot the interrogatories propounded by the plaintiffs, for the reason that if it had been answered in the affirmative the answer would not have controlled the gener al verdict. Judgment affirmed.

Chicago, Nov. 1.—Louis P. Scoville son of George Scoville, whose father has the misfortune to be brother-in-law and counsel to Guiteau, received to-day a letter urging him to go thither and assist in the defense. Scoville, jr., said to a questioning reporter: "I don't want to be mixed up in this matter at all. Circumstances have compelled father, through familv connections, to take charge of the defense. He didn't go from any desire of his own, I can assure you. I protested strongly against his going, but he was pushed into it. The press, and particularly the Chicago press, do not seem to appreciate this fact. He makes nothing by it, is under heavy expense in Washington, and has lost considerable practice here through his absence, but he can do what he likes for my part, I will have nothing whatever to, do with it."
