THE JAILr.

The Contract Awarded to J. A. Park er & Co and Jas. Hook-

The Board of County Commissioners, this afternoon opened the bids for the construction of the new Vigo county jail It was intended to dispose of the matter this morning, but the illness of Commis sioner Wilson prevented. Three bids were received. They are as follows: antes Hook, everything but the iron work and steel jail cells bid, $9,800. Bondsmen, Terre Haute Stone Works and Samuel L. Fenner. The bid stated that other bondsmen would be added If re quired.

J. A.Parker & Co., iron work: bid $4,829.70. Bondsmen, John Wilkes and Robert Geddes.

The Terre Haute Stone works, stone work, cement etc. bid, $4,000. Mr. Hook's bid covered the offer of the Stone Works at a lower amount, and- the board, in the absence of any other bids awarded the contract to Parker & Co. & Hook. Both Messrs Hook and Parker were present when the bids were opened and were as much anaaed as anybody to find that not one figure or letter had been changed by that rascally "ring."

A Wall Street Court Scene.

Hannah Porter, of Happy Alley, entered the offioe of Justice Steinmehl this morning. She was accompanied by two or three small children. "Squire," blurted out Hannah "I've come to swear my life against a woman down in Happy Alley."

What did she do to you 5" asked the court. Threw brickbats in at my windows and nearly killed me would if I hadn't a dodged called me and my husband all kinds of names and said she'd waylay me when I went out after water." 'Better wait till she strikes you and then you can have her arrested for assault and battery" suggested a blear eyed bystander. 'Or fine her for provoke?" said another. "Or wait till she waylays you in an alley" exclaimed a professional juryman who spoke in dismal tones from a comfortable seat behind the stove. "This case is a serious one," said Prosecutor Leveque gravely" and you had better take it before the grand jury."

The woman departed, apparently satisfied with the interest taken in her case, but those in the court room winked at cach other and knowing smiles played around their lips for their isn't a Justice on Wall street who doesn't binver at the thought of trying to aujusta family quarrel from Happy Alley.

The Siock Exchange.

NEW YOBK, NOV. 2.--Considerable long stock was thrown overboard yesterday and the short interest materially increased The disbursements for interests and dividends yesterday are estimated at $10,000,000. A marked increase in the inquisitiveness of bank directors is noticenble. A strong investment demand exists for Northwest preferred. Baltimore & Ohio, and Buffalo, Pittsburg and western companies are making arrangements to build joint lines from Oil City to Chicago Junction, giving the Baltimore & Ohio a through line trom Chicago to Buffalo. Amsterdam and Fraukfort bought a considerable amount of stocks and bonds yesterday.

LATER.

Since noon there has been a heavy and excited buying of Krie and Western union. Erie common rose to 46J-a preferred to 90Va Western Union declined to 863^ and rose to 86%,

A Court Martial.

GALVESTON, NOV. 2.—The court martial for the trial of Lieut. Flipper (colored), of the Tenth cavalry, met yesterday at Fort Davis. Capt. Merritt Baker, of the Sixteenth infantry, appeared as counsel for the accused. Since the adjournment of the court martial last September Lieut. Col. James Van Voorst, of the Twelfth infantry, was detailed as an additional member of the court, and upon taking his seat was objected to by the accused. Tnc court sustained the challenge, not on the ground of illegality but because the accused was unwilling to submit the case to the court as constituted. Adjourned to the 3d iast.

He has a splendid line of rubber goods. As this is going to be a wet winter it will be an excellent idea both for health and comfort to invest. Boegeman treats an alike and he treats all niccly. Price low.
