Mr. Eeeoo will leave for England earl}' in April.
Lizzie 8. is a big favorite for the Kentucky Oaks, with Lucy May as second choice.
The entries for the five stakes of the spring meeting at Chester Park are the largest ever known hereabouts.
The WaTerly (N. J.) Driving Park Gab is now an incorporated bodv, and if ill hereafter be known as the Waverly Driving Association.
The English turlmen were outbid in their own country by a commissioner of Mr. P. Lorillard, at the sale of the Blink Bonny stud on March 3rd. The bay yearling colt, by i"ero
Gomez, out of the
Pearl, by Newminster, wa9 bought by Mr. Lorillard for 1,125 guineas or nearly $5,900.
The American turf never appeared ot be so prosperous. Saratoga, in particular, is a revelation. For twenty stakes more than 950 entries were received, an average of over 47. The Jerome Park and Monmouth Park entries, too, are unprecedentedly numerous. Before long there will be no pecuniary object in sending horses to England.
Certain improvements are contemplated at Jerome Park before the opening of the coming season. Among others is the moving of the judges' and timers' stands to a point some seventy or eighty feet -up the stretch. The space thus gained will be added to the betting inclosure, which will be a great convenience to the habitues ot the same. Moving the stand will compel the moving of all the quarter-posts, and will bring the half-mile post into lull view from the Press box.
Horse racing has been developed so much of late in Spain that in the year 1880 no fewer than eleven towns instituted races, of which the prizes were worth $45,000, besides cups and other valuable pieces ot plate. Sixty-two horses
:n
1880 won 150 races. In Madrid
races take place every year, in May and November, on a fine course, beautifully situated at the extremity of the Castellane drive, and the members of the Society to Encourage Racing, under the patronage of King Alfonso, include the elite of the aristocracy and military men. In southern Spain an effort is being made to form studs with Arab and English horses, and Andalusian racers.
The following American horses are entered in the English Handicaps: In the Lincolnshire Handicap are Wallenstein, Nereid, Mistake, Seminole and Brakespcare. In the Newmarket Handicap Meeting are Wallenstein, Mistake, Bookmaker and Brakespeare. In the Newmarket International Handicap are Wallenstein, Nereid, Mis" take and Brakespeare. At the Epsom Spring Meeting, tor the great Metropolitan Stakes, Wallenstein and Mistake are entered, The great Surrey Handicap has American Spendthrift, Wallenstein and Nereid, and in the City and Suburban Handicap are Undas, Nereid, Iroquoip Foxhall, Barrett and Seminole.
We learn that Mr. F. B. Harper, Midway Ky., has priced his splendid stallion. Ten Broeck, 9 years old, by imp. Phaeton, dam Fanny Holton, by Lexington, to a party for $75,000. Some of the English papers say tt at Mr. F. Grotton lias refused an offer of $100,000 for the bay horse Isonomy, 6 years old, by Sterling, dam, Isol a *le, by we would much prefer Ten Broeck to
Isonomy, as Ten Broeck is the finest and and grandest looking horse in the world, from the tip of *us nose to the end of his tail. He has done what no other horse ever did and retired from the turf without a flaw or blemish, and is to-day as sound as a dollar. He has the fastest mile, 1:89% the fastest two miles, 3:27^ the fastest three miles, 5:26^ and the fastest four miles, 7:15%—the latter seconds faster than any horse has ever run four miles.

Spring in the South has already appeared. The face of nature is seen to the best advantage. The fear Ot pestilence already comes to the mind of the prudent inhabitant of the Gulf States, and he is thankful for the wisdom displayed in the legislation which secured over a million of dollars for the maintenance of the world-known Charity Hospital at New Orleans, La., from the Louisana State Lottery, whose next drawing occurs on April 12th. and about which the full particulars will be given on an application to M. The Italian Opera Hous8 Boms Down During the Performance
Of Lucia Di Lammermoor—Nearly a Hundred Persons Perish in the Flames
Particulars of the Disaster
TIIE FIRST KEWS.
NICE,
March 23.—'The Italian Opera
House burned this evening: The fire broke out at the begining of the performancej The bodies of fourteen persons, who were suffocated, have been taken out and placed in the* Church opposite the Theater. It is feared a hundred men and women perished in the flames.
'V V-.V LATER. NICE, March
24, 3 A. M.—Up to this
hour 59 bodies have been removed from the ruins of the Italian Opera House, destroyed by Are last night. It is feared many more lost their lives.
THE FIRE COMMENCED
soon after the curtain had risen for the performance of Lucia Di Lammermoor. The subscribers for the orchestra stalls and boxes of the grand tier had mostly not arrived.
A MAJORITY OF THE VICTIMS
belong to the working class. Shortly after the fire began the gas exploded, and the house was plunged into complete darkness. A scene of terror and dismay ensued which beggars description.
A DETACHMENT OF SAILORS
from the squadron in the hardor arrived on the scene and displayed great gallantry resouing the people and combatting the fire which was subdued toward ten o'clock Strakosch, the impressario, was slightly hurt Signori BiancaDenadi, one of the leading artists, made her way from the stage to the street in safety..

A Blow at Conkling and Arthur. A Washington special- to the Courier Journal of the 24tli says:
When the list of nominations traS delivered this afternoon and opened by Vice-President Arthur, the first name which met his eye was that of State Sen ator Robertson to be Collector of the port of New York. Arthur looked at the uame with surprise, and quickly sent the news to Conkling, who immediately sought Piatt and held a whispered conference and after the Senate adjourned Conkling summoned his aids, Arthur and Piatt, and went into secret session, and they were enveloped in deep gloom. The question with them now is "to fight or not to fight the Administration."
The report of Judge Robertson's nomination spread rapidly, and it has been the chief subjcct et comment in political official circles throughout the city during the day and evening. Everybody outside of the* White House appears to* be surprised. "This is Blaine's work" is the remark one hears on every hand, and the general drift of discussion is that Robert, son is a slap in Conkling's face and that Conkling, Piatt and Arthur so regard it.
Your correspondent has accurate in fermation, and thfee can be no doubt that the nomination is directly attributable to Blaine's influence. The prominent support given to BLaine by Robertson at Chicago, andjhis open hostility to Grant'9 nomination make the nomination peculiary exasparating to Conkling, and there is lively speculation as to what he is going to do with it, especially as the nomination has been referred to the Commerce Committe, of which Conkling is Chairman, and a majority of which he can doubtless muster in opposition to confirmation if he so determines.
It is generally thought in poiitical circles that the relations between Conkling and the Administration have now reachcd a crisis, and the query on the lips of almost every one to-night is: "Will he fight, and can he afford to fight It was very shrewd in the President to send in a batch of nominations yesterday which were pleasing to Conking, and which were intended to break the force of the blow given to.day. It can be stated, on excellent authority, that neither Conkling, Piatt, nor Arthur was consulted by the President in regard to Robertson's nomination.
