The Government of the Dominican reiublic are evidently satisfied that the ones discovered in 1877 in the Cathedral of San Domingo are really those of Christopher Columbus, for the sum of $ 0,000 has been voted toward the erection of a suitable monument, beneath which the rehes will be deposited.
Mr. Esdaile, the son-in-law of Shelley (he married the poet's daughter, Ianthe, in 1887, and she died in 1876), died the other day at Cothelstone House, his place in West Somerset. A MS. volume of poems by Shelley, which has been preserved at Cothelstone, it is said, will probably be published before long.

The Territory has of late increased very rapidly in Ameri can population, and the extension of the great railroad system is opening up for industrious work large tracts hitherto inaccessible or very difficult to roach.
There has been some surprise that nothing was left in her will by George Eliot to her husband, Mr. Cross, but that all the monev went to the family of her first husband. This was, however, an arrangement entered into previous to her second marriage, by the express desire of Mr. Cross, who is himself very well off.

The late Attorney-General Akerman has left a widow and five young sons living quietly in their pretty little home near Cartersville, Ga. Mrs. Akerman is, unaided, preparing her boys for college. She has taught them all they know, and one is reading Caesar and another Virgil.
Superintendent Smart, of Indiana, has been studying the public schools in the South, and has found a surprising growth of the system, especially in Georgia and Tennessee. The colored people take great interest in the cdiication of their children, and the new generation can, as a rule, read and write. \V
The famine in Russia, it is predicted, will assume proportions altogether beyond previous estimates, and no Steps are taken to meet it. The Russian peasant cannot afford at the best of times to eat wheat, and this grain has been sold long ahead to the Jews and other middle, men. Arrests of Land Leaguers—One ProtestiM) in the Name of the American Republic.
*"*4 New York Herald Special. A number of prominent Land Leaguers were arrested in County Kerry thia morning, and are now on their way to Dublin. The Kilmainham jail, where they will be lodged, will be guarded by a strong force of police and military. Further arrests are announced as having been made in West Cork and County Clare. So far upward of twenty persons have been arrested in the country districts. No arrests in city have been made
News is received here that the Ural arrest under the Coercion act has been that of Joseph B. Walsh of Castlebar, a merchant with large business. He has been prominently indentified with the Land league movement. Mr. Walsh is a cousin of Michael Davitt. He left Castlebar at 2 p. M. for Dublin, and was followed to the train by a large crowd of people, who were cheering him and groaning at the police. Great excite mcnt prevails at Castlebar.
Cornelius Keogh of Carricklish, County Linerick, was arrested to-day at his residence on the charge of intimidation, and brought to Dublin. Michael P. Boyton, a League organizer and one of the tratraversers, was arrested in Kildare on charge of inciting to murder and other acts of violence. When taken into custody, he protested against the act in the name of the American republic. Walsh, Keogh, and Boyton are„now lodged in Kilmainham prison.
Boyton, on being arrested, declared he was an American citizen, and claimed the protection of the United States. It is understood that Hartington and Power of Tralee haye also been arrested. Each prisioaer ^.to-day was presented with a copy of the warrant specifying the charge on which he was arrested! Keogh is an extensive farmer. Walsh's warrant charges him with intimidation in the County Mayo.

The curtains of a box in a Hartford variety theatre are drawn close together at the beginning of the performance each evening. Laughter and other noises are heard, and at length the manager, stepping to the footlights, warns the occupants that they must be quiet or quit. After an interval of silence the sounds of scuffling precede a pistol shot a woman shrieks, and the form of a man is thrown out on the stage but it is only a man of straw, as the excited audience discovers.
