As the reporter ditiered with the. fair lady he quickly changed the subject.— ft'tw York Slar.
A Mutinous Young Lady.
Tho inherent .spirit of mutiny which belongrt roine persons was curiously exemplified l/.y a recent Liverpool case, in which a young lady was fined *'ve bIii I ling.s for refusing to kcc]) to the right in defending one of the approaches to the Liverpool landing stage. Unlike the individual described by Goldsmith, wlio-e eon net was right with his argument wrong, the young, lady of Liverpool was neither right in her argument nor her conduct for shn would not go to the right. Had .she refused to to the left ii itild bo innte easy to understand hei «•'»T cllift, for al all times superstitions have existed which regard thing oceuring on the left hand as of evil omen. When the God of Love in 'attilliis' poem wihes to be auspicious to the pair of lovers he sneezes- obligingly on the right hand side, nnd the belief which was old at. the time'of the poet of Lcsbia still survives in a hundred superstitions. But it is to 1)* feared that no oilier reason impelled the obstinate young Liverpool lady to insi-st upon going to the left than because she was specially enjoined to go to the right. The mere fact of being toid to do one thing and forbidden to do another is in itself sufliciect incitement to some pe.sons to act in a contrary sense. What would the tjeroii.c of the Liverpool case do ifshe chanced to travel in sonicforeigii towns, were people are only allowed to go across bridges on one side and return on the other? Foreign police are often very strict, and it is really cireaftild to think of the number of lines she would have to pay to local exchequers if she did r.otconqucr her desire to go to the left when told to go to the right, and to the right when bidden to keep to the, left.
Women as Capitalists-
Of the $040,440,31)0 of four and four nnd a bail'per cent. National bonds held in this country by individuals, woman hold §72,072,850.-This by no means shows the interest oi the women in these bond-i, for, especially in the Eastern and Middle Slates, women own bank stock or are depositors in savings banks, to a very great extent If to this we add the fact tluit women in these days hold real estate in their own names, and at their, practically speaking absolute disposal, we shall see thai the woman ot this country have a large interest in it. And this is a conservative factor in our history. Whatever may be said as to the mailer*of universal suffrage ior woman, there is no question that those who have properly will seek to know something ot the reason for its taxation, the mode in which the money is speiit, and more or less of the fundamental principles and duties of government. Nor is there any more doubt that the intent of this class would be to obtain and maintain an honest and able and economical Government. The changes in our laws which ave given the women so much right in and liberty of disposition of her own, have been more equitable to her than they have been valuable in steadying the generul judgement. —Providence Journal.
Emma Abbott and her Kusbawd.
Eugene Wctherell, Miss Abbott's busband, is, in the true sense of the word, a business man. He and his wife have both grown from poverty into riches. Their combined property is estimated al $125,000. Wctherell insists that Abbott shall have her separate fortune Every week she sends the bulk of her salary to her bankers in New York to be deposited in her name. Wctherell has a warm heart under a covering of adamant. He is hard to becctnc acquainted with. Once pierce tho coat of adamant and his heart is as warm and responsive as a girl's. He is deeply in love with Abbott. They were married in I^ondon several years ago. Abbott thinks WcMicrcll thii handsomest man in the world. She loves to talk about him about his manly beauty and goodness to lie$.
Abbott is a very pious Voman. One of her missions on earth, she says, is to see her husband in the bosom of the church. Wctherell says she insists on kneeling down and saving her prayers every night before going to bed. "No matter bow severe the weather is and how much risk t-hc riin"of taking cold," he says, "she kneels down bv her bed and spends five ini..utes in her devotions. She says she ntivt yet took cold while saying* her prayers.
Miss Abbott is not a very great eater. The afternoon that she left here she took supper with Mr. Witlicrell, Brignol', Castle and several others at a wrll-known oyster place. The bill of fare was elegant, including fish chowder, broiled mackerel, duck, tenderloin, &c., with accompanying wines. Abbott drank half a gla^s of claret she "Will not taste any other kind of liquor, unless for medicinal purposes. As Abbott earno out from her supper she noticed a bar in the front of the place. "Oh, dear me," she said,"I'm afraid this Isn't a nice place but Brig told me it

Exfavaaanc of French Actresses
The stranger who comes to Parik and does more than merely see the ordltiary sights can not fail to have been a|ruck by the ituport ant part that actresses and demi monduiiua—often synonymous terms —play in the life of the great city. They set the fashions they are received Ui the salons of the haute finance theyj are to be seen every-where—at the racist, at the theater, always in the best places many of them live in very elegant tylc, and are apparently never in want of money. In short, their influence is-verv great.* But bow much of their elegant-c is great. But how much of their elegance is "vvliit'! elephant?" With the exception of Patti aiul Nilsson. both foreigners, and Judic, who earns some 200,COO francs a year in France and in Prussia, there arc* but few millionaires amoii tho actresses of Paris. Grizettc is rich through her marriage, and lives uncomfortable opulence, and is, moreover, an excellent mother. Bat the othcr.iV Suae of these women, will, perhaps, manage their affairs better some day, for they have plenty of talent, and are handsomely paid, and the approach of age will doubtless remind them nt length that they can not bt: eternally stars of the first magnitude. First on the list of the improvident and spendthrifts must be Sa ah Bernhardt, always ln ad over ears in debt, and Jeanne Granier, whft cams 00.000 francs a year at the Renaissance and u0,000 francs in her holiday tours Marie Heilbron, who has had millions and spent them. But the rest are constantly sustaining an almost helpless struggle against old debts. You see them in Bois in fine carriages, and dressed by tlie first milliners and tailors. But the bills are not paid. Almost all the charming young ladies of the Palais Royal, the Boull'es. the Renaissance, the Gymnase, (he Vaudeville, are in a chronic state of indebtedness. After all, it mu.it be remembered that tho earnings of most of these ladies on the stage itself are modest, and that even in Paris the the list of nobobs is limited.—Paris rc.ixm(h!)ice Newark Aihaiticr.

IN THE JAWS OF A BEAR
An Idaho Hunter's Despera'o Encounler .With a Grizzly
The BIhekfoot Idaho) Reginter tell the following story of the narrow- escape of a prospector from a grizzly bears "Alout teu days ago Mr. Talbjt, who Lost river, seventy miles from Blaekfoot, started out with his dog (at shepherd) alter games. He traveled a mile or two, when be saw a fawn and shot and wondcd it, not, however, so but that it could run, which it did. Mr. Talbot and the dog followed until they came to a small ticket, into which he had seen the fawn disappear. Pushing the brush aside, he was alK»ut to plunge through, when in a moment, he was confronlrd by a huge grzzly bejr, which struck him a severe blow on the sholder before he hardly knew what it was. JIc immediately tried to bring his gun to bear on him, but in so d.»ingdischarged it. The bear then got tlic man's head partly in his mouth, cutting the forehead terribly, but no breaking the skull. In a moment's forethought lie pushed his hand into the qear's mouth, and allowed hitu to chew it, thinking lie would thus get an opportunity to relbab the'gun with his other hand. In Ihe meantime the dog had been attackep his bcarship in the rear, and did such good work that be finally let Mr. Talbot go, and mace for the dog, following it through the brush. Exhausted and baelv wounded, with blood streaming from bis l'ore head, both knee joints nearly broken and one hand like a dishrasr, Talbot -crawled out, and was soon joined1'"by faithful dog. Tying bis haudkerchiCf around the dog's neck, be sent him back to camp, and in a short time bis partner and their cook, who bad followed the dog, were on the ground and assisted him to camp, where he is now lying, but is getting along first rate, and in a shdrttime will have fully recovered. He owes his life to his companion, the doe.
