trflSTKRH PENNSYLVANIA I'ENITEJiTIARY AT ATXB6HKNY CITY DAMAGED. Special to the Cincinnati Commercial.

PITTHHUMI,

PA.,

November 25.—A con

flagration which for a time it was fearcdwould be attended with seriously results, occurred in the Western Penitentiary, Allegheny City, about noon to-day. At that nourflame» were seen issuing from one of the wings known as the East IJlock. An alarm waa quickly given and the prisoners from that portion, numbering one hundred, were removed to another part of the building, with an additional guard placcd over them. Meanwhile the tire was spreading with great rapidity, and thecntire roof was amass •of Humes. A general alarm was sounded which brought the fire department from all the districts. At the same time a dispatch was sent to Major Liddell, of this city, for a company of police as a precautionary measure in case the prisoners would attempt to escape, or the fire would necessitate their removal to other quarters

Fortunately, however, the flames were checked before they had reached the other wings. During the progress the greatest excitement prevailed among the inmates, though no attempt was made to esoapc, and had there been, it would not have been successful, as the guards were on the alert, armed to the teeth, and death would have resulted.

The fire originated under the roof, and is supposed to have been the work of some of the prisoners. The loss will probably reach $'5,000. Sixty-eight cells were damaged, and as the prison was already overcrowded, some live hundred persons being incarcerated, it will be diilicult to make a disposition of those who.«e cells were rendered useless by the tire.

A TRUE WIFE.

Harry Fleet, the blacksmith, had a cosy little house in Newburg, which he called his bird's nest. It, with ten good acres attached, had been in the Fleet family for three generations. The one son had always followed the occupation of his sire, as though they were born to the business. Harry had a pride in his work, and to those friends had a larger ambition for him, he was wont to say,"I was born a blacksmith I like it, and will remain one."

In his bird's nest nestled his wife, Margery, and his little son. They were the joy and light of his work-a-day life.

For a number of years Ilarry had leen a very happy man, but a cloud had gathered in the sky, and at last it moved along just over his cottage, and there it obstinately stood. H• stood as bail for an old friend who in danger of losing his liberty in consideration of certain liabilities. The friend had lurched him.

Margrey knew something had 'gone wrong. *He tried to keep the whole trouble to himself, but the shrewd little woman managed to ascertain his secret trouble.

You see, Margery, I don't mind, I can work for you and the boy well enough.but the homestead, there is no help for it that must go and it has been in the Fleet family evcrsinc^it was a wilderness."

Harry told her the responsibility. Said he: "Old 'Squire Mitchell lias paid it, and I have mortgaged the place. He has given me several months in which to redeem it but he might aa well take it now, Margery I shall be no better prepared to pay it then."

Do you mind looking after tli-- Vy awhile? I want to go out." A neighbor came in soon after and inquired for Mrs. Fleet.

She has gone out," he replied. "It must have been her I saw going into Lawyer Knowles' office a moment ago," said the neighbor.

Harry did not reply, but he did not like it. Young Knowles had once been a suitor of Margery's. A little wavering at first in his attentions, for he was a shrewd young fellow, acute in his profession, and in personal matters looking always to the main chance, and Margery had no fortune but her face though there was rumor about the time of Iter marriage that an uncle in a distant part of the country had left her property, more or less, and her relatives there had made it appear that she died in childhood, and had taken possession of it themselves. But Knowles had lost his heart to her so effectually, before this report, that he had been proposed, and had l-epn unhesitatingly rejected, greatly to the astonishing of himself and Harry Fleet

Margery was an orphan, and had been reared by Harry's kind parents, and from continued association with him had learned to read his big heart soj well that she knew who reigned queen in it long before he had courage to tell her. He really never could see why she had preferred a plain man like himself to one whom he considered so finished in worldly graces as young Knowles. So Harry did not like what transpired, and thought too sensible a man to get jealous of a trifle, he was not a little perplexed when his wife made no mention of her business out, on returning. As the weeks went by he came to know of her calling there at other times, and once, on coming home earlier than usual, he met Knowles at his gate coming out. At heart he had perfect faith in his wife, but fortune had begun to rack him on her wheel, and a matter that he would have thought little of a few weeks before, now had the power to torture him.

He was grieved to see that his wife's manner toward him was changed. It was not trouble she had spoken of their approaching loss, and he often found hei singing, merry as a lark there was no longer perfect confidence between them. There was something she was keeping hid, he thought And Margery did have a secret, and kept it—the old adage to the contrary notwithstanding.

Finally the day arrived on which the date of the mortgage expired. Harry's face had a set look. Always in the way, le thought, when around the {house, watching Margery wl)U*wdeftly cleaning

up thinga. Everything she touched yielded like magic. This morning she waa unusually cheerful, and not a trace of regret was there in that sparkling face of hers.

Harry was wofulfy cast down. His clouded face seemed a reproach to her. He bad not raised the money and could not, he said. The

?Squire

offered him an

extension of time he. would not have it. It is of no use," said he, and we may as well be over with it at once. The little place is not worth more than the money you loaned me. I will make you deed of it, and you may write that the mortgage is satisfied."

He produced pen and ink, looking all the time like a man about to sign his own death-warrant. Then baby was hustled unceremoniously back into his cradle, and Margery unlocked a little drawer in hor husband's desl^, producing a package, and placing it before the 'Squire, asked him to count its contents. It was found to cover the whole amount for which her husband had given the mortgage.

It was left by uncle Heth," cxplainMM,..cry. Lawyer Knowles was in ll Hi* -hrewduess to straighten i:«- ...ater out, but I paid him a round sum for his services.''

Harry called himself a slow man, and it did take hiui some time to get the better of his amazement. He had barely succeeded in comprehending the whole, as his wife turned from the door whence the 'Squire had made his exit. Then, for the first time, the little woman broke down. She threw herself into the strong arms that were ready to receive her. "Oh. Harry! how cotiId you—how could you be so jealous of me?"

He ansv ered not at all. but held her as in OTIC of his own iron vises. Presently he fell to kissing her, forehead, cheeks, ips and. looking up, she saw what she had never seen It-fore—on the cheeks of her Vulcan were two round, big tears.

Ilarry did not go to the shop that day, and baby got sadly neglected. It was several years ago that this event tccurred, and Harry's bird's nest is now called "The Dove-cot" by the observing neighbors.

Harry went to work, and Margery to ruminating. She had always been able to adapt means to ends, and supply the means too, if necessary for a wise thinking cap she was in possession of. But this time she was sorely puzzled. She spent the afternoon in eudeavoring to plana method of relief, but it crept dil not intend to reflect on the rwi *\,n fnH roA «nrl at the hotel, but wanted "cash"

away, and she felt tired and defeated It was supper time. She heard her husband's foot strike the graveled walk, at the same time she was struck with an idea. She put his supper on the table without a word, and, instead of sitting down with him as usual, said:

The Itluntlers of the Telegraph. [The Hour.] Not long since a message came to the principal of a business house in this city from his traveling agent, who had reached Philadelphia—"Am at Continental hotel. Send some ha.«h bv mail." The

sent by mail. Affectionate uncle waa informed by telegraph—"Mary is to be buried on Wednesday. Come, sure." Mary, who lived in Chicago, was his favorite neice and, as he had not heard of her illness, the sad intelligence gave him a severe 'shock. He dressed himself in deep mourning and made a hurried journey to the west to find a jovial party assembled at Mary's wedding. The wires had arranged for her to be "buried" instead of "married."

Probably the worst blunder ever made was one that occurred in the case of a St. Louis merchant who, while in New York, received a telegram informing him that his wife was ill. He sent a message to his family doctor, asking the nature of the sickness and if there was any danger, and received promptly the answer: "No danger. Your wife has had a child. If we can keep her from having another to-night she will do well." The mystification of the agitated husband was not removed until a second inquiry revealed the fact that his indisposed lady had "chill."

Timely Words on an TmportHiit Question. [Philadelphia Ledger.)

Since the stability and permanancv of a republican form of government depend entirely on the intelligence, honesty and judgement of the people tho good sense and application of the following must be admitted:

Teach your child that he must become a valuable citizen. Teach him to despise fraud and chicanery in any party. Teach him to scorn shams of every kind, to despise the rank or the prize won by deceit, to bear cheerfully his own share of the burden of government and society, and to perform loyally his own share of labor to preserve and perpetuate the liberties we enjoy.

The young man or woman just entering life needs more than all things this thoroughness of principle. It ia not sufficient that he has brilliant talents, splendid opportunities and ambitious friends. It will avail him but little to lay down a code of laws which he intends vigorously to obey, to be shrewd in his knowledge of people, keen in his bargains, wise in his decisions, indefatigable his efforts. All these are superstructures that will totter and fall without the simple and solid foundations of sincerity and honesty.

Let him pause at the threshold and resolve that, whatever else may escape his grasp, he will hold fast to the rock of principle, and that, though he may not always be able to trace how honesty is the best policy, he will yet* cling to it with unswerving loyalty and faith.

TIMI Power Bchiad tho Throne. [Galveston News.}

A gentleman met his little boy on the street and asked him how they were all coming on at home. "First rate. Mamma has made you a whole new shirt." "Tell mamma when I come home I'll give her a nickel." "Better give it to me." "You didn't make the shirt." "If I hadn't kept my eye on her she would have been leaning over the fence talking about the fashions instead of working. I ought to be encouraged aome anyhow."
