A Florist Accidentally Unearths $3,000 Worth of Gold and Diamonds.

it is Recognized as the Raflin Jewelry* Stolen Eight months Ago.

From the 8t. Louis Post-Dispatch. A romatic case, illustrative of the fatality which follows crime, and the almost absolute certainty of time thwarting the best laid plans of the most ingenious criminals, comes to-day through the regular channels of police information. -i

2834

Olive street, was entered bv some sneak thief while the family were engaged at supper, and jewelry valued in the aggregate at

stolen from a bureau.

Such a thief is called in police circles a '•super sneak." This was the biggest job of the kind that had been done in St. Louis for years, and the police were greatly exercised over it. The Casey-Neville-Maguire gang were suspected and Casey was arrested, but easily satisfied the police that t|p had no hand in it A servant in the house.

WAS SUSPECTED,

and was for a long time under police surveillance, but she was not defisitely connected with the affair. Then came the New Harmony robbery and the flight of the perpetrators, among whom were Kidd, Carr and Daniel Flanigan, who were caught at Memphis in an attempt to burglarize a house. While irf custody there Flanigan gave information about the theft of a

clock from the resi

dence of Joseph Garneau. This led the police of St. Louis to suspect Carr and Flanigan of the Laflin robbery. Chief of Police Athey, of Memphis, .worked upon the prisoners until they finally confessed to having done the work, but they went to the Tennessee penitentiary for five years each for the Memphis job, positively refusing to give any information that would lead to the recovery of the valuables. And now for the sequel.

On last Saturday Mr. C. Connor, the florist, at No.

2740

Olive street, was en

gaged in setting out some plants in the rear yard of Mrs. Miller, at

2729

Chest

nut street, when his spade turned oyer a bundle wrapped up in an old rag, which, upon examination, proved to be a very rich find.

THE JEWELRY.

Upon opening the package it was found to contain three gold neck chains, one silver neck chain, three gold earrings, one gold breastpin, three gold lockets, one gold seal and ring, two gold sleeve buttons, one large gold seal ring, two gold 6hirt studs, a small gold cross set with pearls, a gold ring with a sevenstone diamond cluster, a gold ring with a diamond cluster of eight stones, a gold breastpin with a diamond cluster of seven stones, and several keys and articles of no value.

The surprised florist turned the property over to Officer Joseph R. Speed, who reported the matter to headquarters, where it was at once identified as the Laflin jewelry, and by the Chief of Police this morning turned over to its owner. Beyond any question the jewelry had been planted in Mrs. Miller's yard on the night of the commission of the crime, where, but for its accidental discovery, it might have lain for years and been found again by the burglars when they should have discharged their duty to the State of Tennessee.

rgV? INFANTS' FOOD. J|fy|i It seems a very simple thing to feed a baby, when mothers are unable, and few mothers can believe that their own milk is often deficient in nourishment at)d too frequently injurious, and many a fond mother will wear herself out and destroy her child by persisting in nursing under such circumstances. But the annual records of infant mortality by starvation points to the terrible fact that many thousands of infants are annually starved or stuffed into disease and death when properly nutritious food might have saved them. It is a subject of congratulation therefore that science has at last been able to compound a substitute for mother's milk in the "German Infant Meal," or "Paedotrophine." MISTAKES AND PREJUDICE,

OF RELIGIOUS AND JOURNALS.

Some good Religious and Temperance journals are making he mistake of declaring to advertise a most valuable anti-intoxicating medicine, simply because it called "Bitters," while the same journals are making a greater mistake by advertising some drunken whisky stuff, or nostrum, because it has some f» fancy deceptive name, ending with "eine "tine," printed on its lable, when the bottle is filled with destruction, drunkenness and death. If these good journals would take the trouble to ascertain how many overworked clergymen haye had their lost never-force, brain-waste and flagging energies restored by the use of Hop Bitters, enabling them to preform their arduous pastoral duties and .preach the good sermons that they would have been totally unable to do but for is valuable medicine, and did these journals but know to the host of good Christian Temperance women who rely on them for their family medicine, and how many invalid homes they .could make happy and what glad tidings they would send to every neighborhood by publishing the merits of Hop Bitters, they would advertise them without money and without price. And did these journals but know how many have been, and may be saved from forming intemperate habits by doctors prescribing Hop Bitters, instead of beer, where the use of hops are needed, (there being more actual hop strength in one bottle of Hop Bitters than in a barrel of beer, without any of the intoxicating or evil effects of beer,) they would lay aside their fear and prejudice against the word "bitters."

A few of the many witnesses from religious and temperance sources are given below, who.use, recommend and advertise Hop Bittere.

The President and Manager of Hop Bitters Mfg. Co. is a veteren Temper ance advocate and worker of forty-eigh years' service every man in the Company is Jan active Temperance worker, and the Company spends thousands of dollars annually in Temperance and Christian work.
