Hon. Claude Matthews of ermillion County, is in the city, a delegate to the State Short Hum Convetion, which meets to-day. Professor Collett attended him in a brief call at our sanctum yesterday. The Professor says that Mr. Matthews' many friends are urging him for Lieutenant Governor. He has been a member of the 1 egislature—elected over his Republican competitor bv a large majority from the stalwa:t County of Vermillion.—[Indianapolis Sentinel.

THE HESS-BALL WEDDING. This morning Mr. Eugene Hes-s, of the Bartlett Bindery, was married to Mias Tillie Ball, at the residence of the bride's parents, on North Third street. The bridal party left for Chicago at 11 o'clock via Mattoon^and will return to this city to live. Boih are well known and highly esteemed.

JohnJames and Miss Lizzie Harrington were married this morning at St Anns Catholic Church, Rev. Father McCabe performing the ceremony. A number of friends of the parties were present and gave them the heartiest good wishes on their happy union and the GAZETTE adds its benedictions to the rest

On Saturday night the Democrats of the city met at the various wards in large numbers to select delegates to attend the county convention, which holds its session at the Court House, next Saturday, the 29th. The township meetings took place in the afternoon

FIRT WARD.

W. H. Scudder was made Chairman. The delegates are: Louis B. Martin, F. F. Keith, Geo. A. Schaal, Michael Kennedy and P. W. Stack. A. J. Kelly was made committeeman.

SECOND WARD.

There was a very large meeting indeed at the old Reese carpenter shop, corner Seventh and Walnut, long before the hour of meeting. Judge C.F. McNutt was called to the chair and Pearley Bell made secretary.

FOURTH WARD.

Patrick Osborne, chairman and James Fitzpatrick secretary. Delegates Michael Tierney, Wm. Cooper, Wm. Nicholson, John Kennedy and Timothy Conway Committeeman, Patrick Osborne.

The convention met according to appointment at the Township House. On motion Mr. Harry Donham was called to the chair and John D. Glenn elected secretary. A motion to not allow any one that had been chosen as delegates to the Judicial, Congressional, or State conventtons to act as delegates to the County convention on the 29th was tabled. The meeting then proceeded to elect tellers and Ed. St. George Rogers and E. A. Roberts were chosen. Delegates were selected us follows:

SUGAR CREEK.

The Democratic convention 01 Sugar Creek Township met at Maxville School House. The meeting was called to order by the Township committeeman.

Mr. Reuben Butz was elected chairman and Hugh D. Roquet secretary. A motion to nominate a number of members from whom to choose delegates resulted in the following nominations Messrs. Butz, Bayless. Curley, Crews, Cassady, Clearwater, Dermoddy, Meisner, Roach, Thorp, Gosnell and Grace, and after balloting the result was Messrs. Reuben Butz, F. M. Curley, Alex Crews, Geo Meisner and M. K. Cassady were elected as delegates to the county convention.

Mr. R. Butz was unanimously elected a Democratic committeeman from the Township.

On motion of Mr. Hy. Robinson it was resolved to present a copy of the proceedings of the meeting to the Democratic papers of Tefre Haute for publication.

The meeting was largely attended^ by the voter# of the Township and quite a number of nominees for county offices were present.

PHILADELPHIA, May 24.—A bill, in equity was filed to day in the clerk's office of the circuit court of the U. S., for the eastern district of Pennsylvania against the Philadelphia & Reading Ry., Co., and the Chicago & Reading Coal Co. The plaintiff is Moses Taylor, of N. Y.. who sets forth that he is the holder of $100,000 income mortgage bond of the Philadelphia & Reading R. R. Co., executed December ist, 1876, to Edwin M. Lewir, and that the bond is secured'by assignment by the railroad Co. of a bond to the coal and iron Co. in the sum of $20,000,000 .conditioned for the payment of $10,000,000 iru 20 years from the date that- the said bond as secured by certain mortgages executed by the coal and iron Co. to Geo. DeiKeim. The bill then sets forth, ihat the Railroad and Coal and Iron companies are both insolvent and have been compelled to suspend payment that the companys employ the services of 2,500 men, that both companies are really operated under the same managemet, and that improvement in coal and iron«business is all that is necessary to restore the companies to the condition of prosperity. The bill concludes by praying that in the meantime a receiver or receivers of said railroad and coal company be appointed with such power and authority in regard to preservation and use of the same a* to the court shall seem best adapted to protect and preserve the interests of all persons having any interest therein.
