THE xEHKE ^AUTis WEEKLY GAZETTE,
PQETRY^O HORTICULTURE.
Paper by Mrs. J. O. J«. £V 4l at tlic Last Meeting oi tho ticultural Society at the
Residence ot cafct. Potter.
The following is the paper which has been so much complimented: It has been remarked that poetry in a horticultural society was out of place. I do not think so. We discourse monthly of fruits and flowers, of birds and bee?, and insect life, of winds and storms, of heat and cold, and changes cf the sea sons all of these are poetic subjects, and we could not eliminate poetry Irom our society if we would.
The world is full of poetry we hear it in the breeze that wafts the 6picy breath of the soft south wind till it kisses our northern hills, and in tbe brooks and streams that babbling run and tell their laughing tales to the dry sands or lave the stony faces "of the sunken rocks till they, too, fain would strile., We find it in 'he woods, the deep, somberous woods, where scarce a shadow falls, so dense the gloom yet, there, a thousand voices, in low, rythmic strains, rehearse fhir nature's poetry We read it in the going down, and in the rising of the sun and shall we, then, have none of it? It may not be expressed in rhyme, but to eliminate all the poetry from our society, and from horticultural pursuits, me thinks, would be to cast a shade of desolation over it and one might write thereon, for epitaph: a sodden mass of inharmonious life.
One treats of wind?, and storms, and atmospheric phenomena. How grand the theme
The rustling of the winds are but the whispered words of an Almighty mind, directing change in atmospheric waves, that purifies and fits for mortal use the air we breathe, and speaks of changeful seasons as they come and go, and tells fu !1 many a low poetic tale, of hill, and ale, and wood, and sea, and land, from whence they come.
Another treats of landscape gardening, and surely, there is fdod ior poetry. In fashioning out a landscape, planning the grounds, planting shrubs and trees, arranging avenues, constructing waterfalls and rivulets, and placing the buildings so that they all may form a beautious whole, and have, no deep, poet'c thofight imbued, would be, to crect a canopy over all, and, thereby, shut the sun from smiling in. As well 6hut out the life-giving rays of the bright luminary, from casting shadows and gleams, and so vivifying nature into life, that every bud would shout for joy, and burst the tiny bands that hold it back from the sweet revels of spring, as
Before you make a friend, eat a bushel Iset naught the unwritten poetry of salt with him. expressed, through nature, everywhere. We cultivate and treat of flowers, and
It is a terrible affar to be obliged to h0 can look upon their delicate forms, love by contract. |painted and fashioned with such dainty care, and redolent of sweet perfume, turning with reverent faces to. the sun, or drinking in the nectar of the dews clinging for scanty sustenance, sometimes, to shelving rocks, or pushing up their terdheads from .out the moss and weeds that line the woods and hills who can jjlook on such, as these, or give them Cure, nor listen to the poetry, i.--written though it be, that floats forever round their beds, and springs in songs and couplets to the mind, whenever their glowing faces meet the eye?
A woman who laughs at her husband laves him no more.
The follies of youth are food for re pentance in old age.
We give much time and thought to the studying of fruits and plants and, does frhe cultivator prune his trees, set his grafts, train his vines, and watch the unfolding of the buds, and floating cut o( germinating life and note the propagation of his fruits, and gather them all in, nor read the lessons that they teach, or study once the line poetic pages spread before his eyes? We pity such, and fain would bring before his mind the truth that God cpeaks always through his works and poetry is but the expression of some sublime and glowing page, whereon fair nature paints a vivid truth.
To dig the earth and stir the mould may seem but pro6y toil, but look beyond the yielding, crumbling sod and note the germinating of the seed, the springing into life anew of myriads of tiny heads, all emerald crowned, and hands, all reaching upward with what might they may, all intent on offering to their God the matin 60ng of spring. And see. anon, the golden sheaves already for the harvest crowned the gathered fruits in luscious plenteousness, and garners filled with crowding grains, all hustling up as though in eagerness to join the army marching on to give some needed sustenance to hungry, famished hosts and then the coffers plethoric and running o'er with gold. Dost see the end? Ah! sad would be the toil were it not for hopes of brightened homes and hearts made glad—were it not for hopes that brighten more the more we toil. And dost not hear the low poetic song, reverberating, even now, throughout the land, whose burden runs: Strike! deeper strike the spade, and deeper run the plough, and mellow up the earth, and whet the scythe, and prune, and dig, and toil till earth yields up her store of wealth to thee. Earth is not niggardly in store or gifts, she only asks for toil, then scatters blessings with a lavish hand. So come and join the workers, every one, Amdhelp to swell the chorus just begun.
