McCOSKY V*. WALKER.
A Question of Veracity Between them,
Which in the Light of Walker^ Conflicting klatmeuti 1« not Hard to icoid.e.
From Friday's D-iily.
Mr. McCoskey, who wa6 in Washington giving testimony before the Exodus Committee, returned yesterday and was sought out and interviewed with reference to the card from Mail Agent Walker, pablished in the Express of Wednesday, with the following result:
Reporter—Mr. McCoskey, have yon seen Mr. Walker's card in reference to your testimony before the Exodus committee?
Mr. McCoskey—I have read it. R.—Do you intend to reply? Mr. M.—No I shull take no notice of it. I have givenf my testimony under oath before a committee of Congress, ai.d I do not think 1 can add to its weight by a newspaper card andbn the other hand after the showing-up you have given him in your paper, I don't think any number ot cards from him can detract anything from it.
R.—When was it Walker made the statement ycu refer to in your testimony? Mr. M.—I do not remember the dale but 'twas only a day or two after his returned from the Nashville convention.
R.—Where were you. Mr. M.—On the corner ot Sixth and Main 6treet, by McKeen's bank. hailed me from across the street, and waiting till he came up, I said, "Hello Walker, back are you!" or words to that, effect.
R.—Did you question him? Mr. M.—Asked him about the convention, as a matter ot courts#, as I knew he had just come from there. He said it was a good thing and that he had made arrangements to turn the exodus toward Indiana instead of Kansas and thought he would get enough to carry the State for the Republicans. He said (he larger number of them would be distributed in the southern counties, some hereabout, and mentioned one other placc where a few would be sent, but I have forgotten wheie it was. He said his arrangements were for 10,000.
R.—Was Walker sober at the time? Mr. M.—He might have had a drink, but he was not drunk.
R. He says he barely knows vou when he sees you how about that? Mr. M. I will add the full weight of my testimony to his that I am not intimate with him, but when he says he barely knows me by siaht, he lies. I had had frequent conversations with him before the one mentioned and alter gave him money once to buy me a railroad ticket to Indianapolis and return, and I wouldn't be likely to trust a stranger with money—at least not a strange nigger. The last conversation I had with him was the morning after his family row, reported not long since in the papers
R. Is there any truth in the report that you sought to be subpoenaed to Washington?
Mr. M.—None whatever. The first knew of it was when Judge Carlton erved me with the writ. No one had ever even spoken to me about going.
R.—So you shall not reply to his card? Mr. M.—No, by no means, further than what is embodied in what I have said to you. His denial illustrates the old adage, that one crime suggests another. Having published himself to the world as a common liar, by holding out false inducements to his race to emigrate to this state, as though laborers were wanted, "The harvest is great and the laborers are few lip now see*s to screen himself by slandering our very effecient School Board, by saying, "I knew of no reason why McCoskey should swear to such a clear-cut falsehood as this testimony of his is, except the fact that he is employed by the School Board, which is Democratic,to do the carpenter work about the school buildings and the Democratic managers have required him to swear to this miser* able and barefaced falsehood under threat of cutting off his mechanical head/' Now, if "the harvest is great and the laborers few,:' why should a man swear to a lie to get a little work to support his family or have his mechanical head cut off? This negro, having been clothed with a little brief authority and having undertaken to do the dirty work for a few unscrupulous men. seems to think that mecnanical heads'' can be pressed into the service to deceive the unfortunate poor people of the South that such scoundrels as he nay hold office and by such infamous conduct cast a, stigma upon the only political organization which I have ever supported, the Republican party. The scoundrels are laboring under the impression that it is required by then to insult, slander and degrade the laborers of the pountry and honest men who employ them are to be accused of requiring them to perjure

themselves in consideration of having the privilege to do hard work. What a magnificent harvest is here presented by this black beast of Hayes' civil service reform. 1 am in favor of protecting the poor unfortunate negro net only in the North but in the South, and 1 am in favor of hanging any scoundrel who would make their condition worse than it i?, regardless of any party that he may affiliate with. And when a partv has the rower to protect them and don't do it, it will be represented by such men as our colored Mail Agent, who I believe would swear to a lie, cut a throat or scuttle a ship for an office if he wasn't 6uch a coward.
R.—That's strong, but I guess it's O. K. Much obliged to you good day. Mr. M.—Hold on a minute. I desire it understood that what 1 6ay applies only to Walker and not to the Republi can party nor to ar.y idividual except him.
