THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1880.

A BRAVE ENGINEER. When the collision occurred at Cameron Point, on the Pennsylvania Railroad, last week, Engineer Chris. Dean was caught in the wreck of his locomotive, with one foot caught fast agains the boiler head. While he was in this position, says the Oil City Derrick, his foot being literally burnt off by the hot boiler head, he managed to reach his tool-chest, and when the rescuing party came along they found him endeavoring to extricate, not himself, but his fireman, who was in even a worse predicament than himself. His first words were: "Help poor Jimmy never mind me." The fireman was extricated, but it was too late, as he was so badly injured that he died soon after being rescued. When Mr. Dean was taken out of his perilous position it was found that his foot was so badly burned and crushed that it would be necessary tc amputate the limb above the ankle. He took the proposal very coolly, remarking to the doctor: "Cut off as little as possible: I need it all."

The salaries of Misses Lizzie Ensey, Kate Krout, Emma A. Ward, Cora Stoner, Anna Hartung, Fannie M. Beach and Clara McFarland, who have been teaching a ear, were, on motion, increased according to the regular schedule of salaries, such new salary to continue to the end of the school year in the summer of 1S81.

The following resolution was then adopted: Resolved, That the salaries of teachers who take positions before the first of February be increased according to schedule at the beginning of the school year next fallowing, and that all the salaries of such teachers as take positions after the first of February be increased accordihg to schedule at tiie beginning of the second school year following.

The following communication, which is a little obscure, was received through the mails from New York, on a po&tal card signed F. D. and and directed to the School Commissioners of Terre Haute, and it was read, and referred to the waste backet. It reads: "Derserving people must not want shelter. Church property must be fitted comfortably to shelter "until better arrangements can be made for »herr. It is a duty of the government to see this enforced."

A CURIOUS FREAK.

TWO LAMBS WITH ONE HEAD, OR ONE LAMB WITH TWO BODIES. A freak of nature occurred recently on on the farm of Joshua Moore, a prominent farmer living in the northeast corner of Lost Creek township. A lamb was born, or would have been born, had not the'mother died in travail, which had two bodies. There was a single head, with three ears, the one in the center being larger than the others and probably formed from a union of the two. There were two necks but formed together. This union continued half way down the bodies when they became separated entirely, dividing at a small angle. There were eight distinct legs, though the two inner fore legs were very close together. This curious monstrosity was ta: ken from the dead body .of the mother and was itself dead when discovered. Mr. Moore has saved the pelts and will probably have them stuffed and preserved, as they certainly ought to be.

THE owners of the Union Depot Zoological Garden will this year test thoroughly the ground hog theory and also establish the date. There is a ground hog concealed near the garden whose appearance is expected. It didn't come out on the third of February, 60 all advocates of that day may go to grass. The next date popularly believed in is the 14th. It will be watched.

THE first premium was awarded the Davis S. C. Hams at the Centennial Exposition the Cincinnati Exposition and the Louisiana State Fair. They are the only first class S. C. Hams offered in this market for sale at all the grocers. Ask for them.
