Maine, is variously known in tiae Pice Tree State as Ad Interim and Old' jnan-not-afniiu-to-isaue proclamations.
JUorVG of Massachusetts, who became Governor of Masachusetls by a bare acratvh,,,receiving less than a majority of the whole number of votes, has telegraghed his congratulations to his minorityship Governor Davi6 of Maine.
OLD-MAN-#OT AFRAID TO ISSUEPROCLAMATION* CHAMBSRLAIN says Governor Davis #uuie a mistake in refusing permission to, and forcibly preventing the Fusion legislature from holding its sessions in the State Wouse.
BLAINE'S friends pretend thw* his boom will be helped by the events of past few months in Maine. It is just a little difficult to understand how they make this out. Maine has been for a quarter of a century a Republican State. It has been considered certain. Majorities there have been just about what the Republican leaders desired them to be. And Blaine has been the dictator. And yet at the last election, notwithstanding the fact.that Blaine devoted the whole of hi6 time to it, the Republicans were badly defeated at the last election. And it is currently reported and generally believed that to obtain the plurality of votes his party received, a number of desperate measures were adopted, and that intimidation of voters, principally Government peji6i.onei«s and factory employes, ftnd btlbefy Wel-e extensively indulged in. It is known that an enormous amcunt of money was expended there.
And then there has been all this confusion and disturbance in consequence of the organization of the two Legislatures and the election of two Governori-. If Mr. Blaine is unable to manage things better in his own little State where he'is supposed to be the idol of his party, what prospect is thereof his being able to do much in a national contest. Neither he nor his friends can come into the next national Republican convention and give the delegates astur ance that his* own State will cast its electoral vote for him should he become the candidate of the party for President
Indeed, with the odium attaching to the party in consequence of the attempts at briberymade by Wallace R. White, there is every reason lot believing that at the next election the Republicans will be over'.•whelmingly defeated in Maine, and
Blaine's presidential aspirations will be knocked into nothing, with his senatorial seat. Republican success in Maine is such a doubtful piece of business »hat ^Jjt much better adapted for starting a funeral than a presidential boom. Blniue &
