From the St. Louis t\«t-ll«patch. Perhaps the most degrading and •wretched piece of alleged "sport" yet chronicled in St. Lcuis was a Vast night between well known light-weight boxer and a Siberan bloodhound., the property of a gentjeman who has for years been in conrm-and of one. ol' the best boats on the upper river. The pre Uminaries of the contest were arranged in a sporting saloon on iixtU street, where in f^ct the idea originated, partly in banter and partly in earnest, A PostDispetch reporter was told by the genman who gave away the information

the fight had its origin in a remark of Patsy Brennan's to the fffect that he never saw a dog of which toe was afraiii Capt. at once replied that he had a dog of which most tpcople were inclined t.) steer clear, a statement which was at once met by an coffer to fight the dog without weapons '-for $250. Atter much difceussiorx th-c'bet was taker and the preliminaries arranged by the $er8on6 who knovr just how such fight should be arranged. Everybody that 4tnow6 old StLouis recollects the number of cock and dog fights that used to take place in the neighborhood of the Harlem House Brulgfe, and the recent disuse of that locality made it all the more tecure fora contest like this, at which it vvas thr. in tention to have very few spectators. 'In a little pic-nic of this kind the persons most avoided after the police lire the gentlemen of tiic press, but a reporter of the Post-Dispatch** as able to elude the vigilance of :he Cerberu?, who admitted the party in to the Sixth street saloon, whence hacks were taken !o

THE SCENE OF BATTLE.

The repovttr was given a beta in th hack which was carrying tl»i: bloodhound, his master and trainer, ai for a whiie a nervous seat it was. The dog was? of the very kitgett breed, resembling more a calf in size than a dag, and its muscles were as hard as iron., 41 seemed to be nothing bul muscle, its head and face were the naost repulsive "that ever were carried by a dog. The Uenu, pendulous ears, wrinkling and almost bare, formed a sort of frama for the most villainous countenance. The «ye6 were small, black and'beady, and the lip«i hung down far over the teeth. .They were drawn np, however, constancy during the carriage riJe, and a sudden rasping snarl was sounded each time &he shaking of the carriagejarred him «ne way or the other. His owner sat at his head, holding the spiked collar «vith both hands, and keeping the dogjcalm with voice and hand. The hack took its way rapidly out Fifth'to Broad way, and then out,the Bellefontaine road, posing the Harlem House And turning to the left 011 the dirt road, passed Holy Trinity cemetery, and camc to stop just ttois side of Florrissant avenue. A litttle group of men were standing beside an stable, evidently waiting fbr his Siberian majesty, and as soon as ihe hack discharged its load the whole party moved into the building, which was soon lit up^ after a manner, with some five or six lanterns which were hun# from the ratters. Among those in attendance the»reporter noticed an ex-Police Commissioner and an ex-Jadge, three members of the House of Delegates, a vc^prominent physician and several business men. The l.alance df the party were sporting characters pure and simple.'

In a few moments the straw was swept clear from the middle of the barn, And the two combatants were got ready for.battle. Brennan was dressed an heavy corduroy panu, thick soled boots and a heavy felt «hirt which buttoned closely around his threat and came up well under Wisxhin he had eavy buckskin gloves on, and the only.exposed part of his body a-oc his face and shortly-cropped hair. There was in immediate kick by the backers of dog *yhen they saw how Brennan had dresfcod himself.

'GIVE SIBERIA A CHANCE."

laid fudge "The fight will not go on tilltihe man strips/' At thi6 there was a general and hot discussion among the backers of caninje and bruiser, and the matter was only settled by the referee, Mr. ——, a (junior partner a Main street grocery house, who said that the agreement was plain that Brennan was to fight without weapons, meaning either of offence or defence, and consequently he was obliged to strip, which he did in a corner of the room amid thejeera of those who were backing the blood-hound. He soon came forward, naked to the waist, but with a little hesitation, which was keenly noted by those who were betting on his canine opponent. The dog was being carefully groomed by Capt. and the trainer, two members of the St. Louis Kennel Club being most interested in the process, and as soon as these preliminaries were concluded the betting began fiercely, the odds being all in favor of the dog, "A hundred even that the dog takes first blood," ''Twenty to fifteen on Tiger," "Take you," and similar cries, diverted the attention from the combatants for a moment while they were being placed. Capt. had much difficulty in holding the Siberian until time was called, and then with a vicious "sick him, Tige," the bloodhound was releasad and leaped straight for the throat of the prize fighter, who.6prang to one side and caught the

dog a terrible body blow as he went by, turning him completely over ta the air and making Tige corns doim heavily upon his back. The next second he was in his trainer's hands, and the betting became furious. One gentleman. a member of the House, within three minutes had put up over $700 ffn the dog, even, and odds either way were eagerly snatched up. The referee again called time, and this rournd Brennan lost his lack. Tiger, made more cautious by his first rude rebuff, Circled found and round his human antagonist, snarling horribly, and apparently gulping down his rage. He made several feints, but Brennan was watching him too closely to be thrown off his guard. AH this time the crowd in the barn were almost frantic with excitement, yelling at their, favosites and encouraging hound and man by every expedient they-could think of. At last the deg got within three feet of Patsy and made his spring. He was met by a terrible blow straight from the shoulder which made the blood fly from his nose and mouth, but he was too close to be evaded, and in the same instant HIS TEETH GROUND INTO THE SHCHFLDER of his human antagonisMind, borne backward by the weight, Brenan sank slowly to the floor, hi^ face drawn and white with pain, but with a scowl onhi6 brow that meant mischief. The blood gushed from his mangled shoulder, and almost as 5*on as he was fairly on theiground he got both his hand6 into Tiger's mouth and tugged at the closing jaws. He had to take a second grip, choosing the long lips of his enemy this time and tearing them badlv before the hound released his bofrd, and' both the fighters were taken fi(?m each other by their *friends. The Post-Dispatch reporter was standing just over Brennan as his sectonds attended to his wounds, and had a^ood chance to .gamine the fearful execution which a bloodhound's teeth can make in a veryfew seconds. The collarbone was already (bare and the laceration of the shoulder was simply horrible. The dog was comparatively as badly injured. One of his lips was so badly torn that it hung down several inches, and three of his teeth had been broken bv the 'blow he got in the face. He war. just as plucky as the man, however, and when he was loosed again came forward readily.

Brennan assumed the offensive this time, running in on the dog, who leaped half way to ttieet him, and, catching Tiger by -the throat, held him up and began kicking hirrr heavily in the belly with his strong «oled Shoes. There were immediate cries Foul" in the crowd, and a rorsrtv of the-dog's friends was made upon Brennan «at once, bearing him to ground, at "which moment his backers rescued him, and for a few seconds pa.ndemonhrm prevailed. There was a regu«lar riot, in vphtch a good many were badly (hurt? 'Tiger, not knowing his friend*, fastened upon one of themutnd bit hinn severely in the arm before the disturbnnce was quelled. Wheo $uiet was jieetored -the referee decided that there was no foul, as Brennan had a eight to use *hvHself any way he wished, but Brennan was not in very good fettle to renewthe fighi, as in the melee some one HAD (KICKKDHLIM HEAVILY IK THECJIBK and something had got in his eye, almost blinding him. He came up gamely, itow ever, more so "than Tiger, who appeared to have-almas' enough of him. and, cctch ing the dog as before, very soon onded the combat, for Tiger rapidly ibecame un conscious, ant! when Brennan threw him over he Say. perfectly limp aod motionless, «nd the, good offices of his ifriends were at once applied to hi6 restoration. The raferee again called •"Time" and Bremnen limped forward. Tiger aeuld not •be ^brought on. however, and after a vain •effort his trainer threw .up the' sponge, and the most exciting fight-ever seen in"St. liouis was ended.

As -toon as he was declared .victor Bretsnttn fainted from the pain in his shoHltier and side, which he had held down by hiswunconquerable pkack, and medtoal assistance was at once got for him.

The fight began a littte after 10 r,lock and atiiti the paity began to disperse. A few minjutes nfier that hour ^Tifiref turned over on his back, trembled a little and died, settling once for all the question of the superiority of human strength over canine. Quite a large amount of money changed Viands, after the engage meat the losers promptly paying up to avoid publicity and the police, although it was strqngly cla'med that Bi en nan won bv a fotiL A reporter called on Patsy Brennan, which, «f course, it is needless' to say, is-an assumed name, at noon today, arid faund him resting easily. The doctor in attendance thinks he will be out again 'before New Year's. His backers are trying to arrange another fight between SPatsv and an English mastiff, but he 6aye that he will not enter the lists again" onless -much more money is guaranteed than h£ made upon the first occasion.
