FROM the Rockport, Indiana. Banner. There is no medicine in the world which has gained such fame as St. Jacob's Oil this is, however, not in the least astonishing, when we consider its truly won' derl'til curative powers. Mr. F. Rodenber^of Grand view, called at our office last week and related the following cirjcainstance: I suffered with rheumatism lor over six years consulted many physicians and tried hundreds of remedies, but without avail. Having seen St. Jacobs Oil advertised in your paper, and iteard of some most astonishing cures, I sent to Rockport for a bottle of the Oil. and used it according to directions. The .^relief I felt was almost ^electric." I got ?better at once, and now there is not a trace of rheumatism left'in my body.

THE LEGEND OF ST. CHRISTOPHER—A FINE OLD PAINTING.
There is to be seen at Gagg'g, in McKeen's new block for a day or two a novelty in the way of a large old painting which the owner has left to be framed by Mr. G.
The picture i6 a good representation of one of the legends of St. Christopher. It was purchased by a gentleman of taste and culture in Europe, a year or two ago and presented to a friend in the city.
St. Christopher was, according to the legend, a colossal man and used'. a tree for a staff. He made himself useful at times by carrying travelers across swollen rivers. On one occasion he took a child upon his shoulder and in crossing he found himself sinking into the sand, by reason of the enormous weight he was carrying. On inquiring the cause, he was told he was bearing the infant Savior. When he reachcd the opposite shore he stuck his huge staff in the sand and the next morning it was laden with delicious fruits that had grown and matured in the night.
The picture represents the Giant, clothed in bright colors, in the midst of a rapid river, 'with the infant Savior on his shoulders and the tree in his hand. The scenery indicates from its desert-like appearance, one of the rivers of Idumea, crossed by the Holy family in the.. flight to Egypt.
It is a rare old treasure, and the owner may well be preud t-.
A LITTLE WAR IN* SIBLBY TOWN. Yesterday afternoon a quarrel resulting in blows was started in Michael Burn's saloon on Lafayette street between the railroads and was concluded on the sidewalk. One of the party induced a mob of his friends to come up and take a hand and then the fight became general. A part of the combatants are employees at the northern rolling mill—big brawny fellows who strike like little pile-drivers. One of these brought blood in quarts every time he hit any one. His arms were spotted to the elbows with the claret, Broken noses were as plenty as they could be,seeing that there is only one appendage of that sort to each man. Jno. Burns tried to separate the fighters but wa6 himself roughly handled

O N Saturday evening will occur the much talked about exhibition of "living wax figgers"' at Dowling Hall. The figgers" have been successfully remolded, and are in the best condition. Indeed the exhibition will be in much better condition than when shown before the crowned heads of Europe, even when exhibited before his celestial majesty, the emperor of China. Added to the above great and overwhelming attraction will b$ the chaste and elegant operetta of 111 Jacobi." Signor GuiJizlino del Tuorghana is already here, while Signora da Kelleriraa and. Tuelle Pellitier will arrive on Wednesday. Then the whole will conclude with the charming ballet entitled the "Frau Gaus Quadrille.'' This ballet is received everywhere with immense enthusiasm. It is not a "song and dance" affair, but the sweetest song win accompany the intoxicating undulations oi the Tcrphiscorean mazes. ,,

TKRRK HAUTE^DCC. 24tH, 1S79.. To the Editor of tbe GAUTTE It may not be known to you but there is in Terre Haute a Ladies' Literary Society or reading club as it is variously called which is destined to become memorable in the minds of the Prairie City. On a recent occasion I was, without any connivance, however, on m) part, an auditor of a small portion of the proceedings. The club has, it seems, been reading various prose works of history, philosphy and fiction. The range has been wide but the text always prose. Certain members of poetic and sentimental temperaments, begged for a short excursion into the realms of
oesy, to which all finally gave assent. should be remarked in passing that when the reader makes any mistake either of inflection, emphasis, pronuncia tion, or, in fact, any mistake whatever, the members call the attention of the President to the fact by the uplifted and agitated hand. On the occasion to which I refer the fair reader had, at the close of the second line of the beautiful poem she had selected, pronounced the words, bone," when a jeweled hand was raised. The President requested the reader to pause, and asked what was .the matter. The critic insisted that the reader had not laid sufficient stress on the article a which, though in ordinary instances an unimportant word, in the present case was the key t» the whole poem, and ought t« be emphasized accordingly. By its use, it was further contended, the author had, with one decisive stroke, shown the extfeme poverty of Old Mother Hubbard who would, but for her straiteneJ circumstances, have given her poor dog mere thsn "A bone out of that capboard, which proba bly kept her dog meat. The President decided that the objection was well taken, and the reading proceeded
Before the fair youtlg rpader of the second poerD had completed the first line of that tender and touching little poem beginning, "You'd scarce expect one of my age" a dozen hands were raised and there was a visible agitation in as many countenances. When the president finally succeeded in restoring partial order several voices, husky with emotion, called the attention of the presiding officer to article 1, section 1 of the constitution, which expressly forbids any allusion to age. The president decided the reader oiit of order, and a commiltee of three was appointed to make the selections for each subsequent meeting.
