THURSDAY. DECEMBER II. 1879.
DURING Mr. Frank Mills' lameness Mr. Charles Mixer is carrying the fifth mail district.
IT would be well if nineteen J. M: Davises in town changed their middle initial, as twenty of them are the 6ame.
TRAVEL is very brisk now, and the register of the Terre Haute House shows every day a great number of arrivals.
"THERE may be sofne virtue in all of them" he said, "but fer actual worth and rapidity of effect, I know that nothing made can excel Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup."
AN excursion is to be run in January from this citv to New Orleans. The excursion will be by rail from here to Cairo, and from thai place the excursionists will go on one of the steamers of the Anchor line. The fare for the round trip will be $30, which will include meals while in New Orleans.

The Vigs Horticultural Society met at Sugar-Grove school house yesterday. The exercises consisted of essays, discussions, extempore speeches, select readings, social conversation, and an eating exercise.
The following named persons took an active part in the exercises: Rev. Martin, Mrs. J. O. Jones, Captain Potter, Mrs. Schultz. Rev. Abbey, Mr. H. D. Scotr, Mrs. Pence, Mrs. "Aydelotte and Mr. Woolsey Barbour.
Each exercise was full of interest, pointed and practical. After the members of the society had engaged in an almost thrilling contest in the discussion of Mr. Scott's essay, Mr. Baibourarose and "struck right and left." iii an extempore speech, which took the house by storm.
Roars of laughter and loud clapping of hands were heard several times during his remarks.
Although each exercise was a treat, the writer desiies to say that the papers of Messrs. Scott, Abbey and Potter were able and scientific essays—a credit to the writers., uj •,"1':
One beautiful feature of the society is that at all times the members are polite, courteous and sociable with each other. Each meeting opens with the warmest greetings, and closes with kind and heartwishes.
PROF. BRENNECKE'S CARNIVAL. From Saturday's Daily. Last night Armory Hall was nearly full of persons who went to see the much talked of carnival. The preparations for the successful presentation of the new dances had been expensively and carefullv made. The first exhibition ,was a flower dance of Vienna. It was beautifully done, but not entirely to the professor's satisfaction and it was, therefore, repeated later in he in
Miss May Crawford and Robert Johnson danced, what is called a Tyrolean medley, and won much applause thereby. "The nine muses" and the "Wooden Shoe Burlesque," were nicely given.
The Sailor's Hornpipe was danced in such manner as to call for continued applause. The children are wonderfully proficient in its execution and in the finale looked and acted with charming effect.
After the May Pole dance which was well done, the audience enjoyed seeing a military quadriile, anew thing here and one of the best entertainments given. The exhibition closed with the tableaux called the Artist's Dream. All the little girls taking part were beautifully dressed and looked very pretty.
The sailor suits became the boys. This afternoon Prof. Brennecke is repeating the exhibition at a matinee at the same place. ¥.*_"•• -i? A,

The young ladies of St. Stephen's are always busy in getting up some entertainment, which will both instruct and amuse the public. Next Thursday evening, we understand, they will give an entertainment, which will be unusually interesting. It will be held at Dowling Hall, and will be followed by a supper. Miss Blake has consented again to exhibit her far-famed collection of unparalleled wax works. Miss B.'s collection has been SG long absent that their arrival will be hailed with universal satisfaction. Unfortunately, on their journey from Australia, many of the most interesting "figgerB" have become so much injured that their accomplished exhibitor has been obliged to melt them over and recast them. In doing this Miss Blake has been busy for some time, and they will be presented as fresh and blooming as ever. In addition the old familiar "stand-bys" moral, new and interesting "statues" has been added. Among other new attractions, the Cardinal virtues will be represented by some of our
rominent citizens for example, Truth, will be represented by a "gallant colonel," well known by all.
Than there is to be a very brilliant operetta, which is said to be very amusing and elegant.
The whole programme will conclude by the famous "Mother Goose Quadrille," which has attracted so much attention in Eastern cities. 0
BASTARDY SUIT. From Friday's Dai ly.
Miss Belle Snediker yesterday appeared before Justice Deaehie and wished to in stitute suit against Ralph Conover for bastardy. The case was called yesterday afternoon. A. B. Felsenthal appeared for the plaintiff, ahd Richard Dunnigau for the defendant. Miss Snediker swore that she is now pregnant with a bastard child, and that the defendant, Ralph Conover, is the father of it. Upon the statement of Miss Snediker, the court held Conover to bail in the sum of $500 for his appearance to answer to the com plaint, in the'Vigo circuit court. Bond was furnished by Samuel Conner and A aron Conover.

The grand jury has returned an indictment against Carrie Jackson for blackmailing Patrick Hickey, in feloniously accusing him with an assault and battery upon her with an attempt at rape. The indictment states that Miss Jackson filed the affidavit with the intent of extorting money from Mr. Hickey who was wholly innocent of the accusation. The jury further presents that Alonzo Roberts and Nathan \v eather did, before the felony was committeed, maliciously incite and abett Miss Jackson to commit the felonv.

From Thursday's Dally. r%
Last evening, at the lesidenittfe of the bride, on north Twelfth street, Col. Grafton F. Cookerly was united in marriage to Mrs. Martha A. Snider. Rev. S. M. Slimson performed the ceremony. A large number of invited gue6ts were wit esses of the ceremony, and partook of the lavish hospitality of the genial host and his gracious bride. A bounteous repast was served shortly after the marriage ceremony was greatly enjoyed. Many others, friends of the Colonel, for no man in Terre Haute is better known or has more friends, called during the evening to pay their respects and all were made welcome. It was one of the most agreeable and jollieet wedding receptions ever held in Terre Haute. The newly wedded will not take a tour, but remain quietly at home during and after the honeymoon.

*•'41 A CONCERT AT BRAZIL. The Brazil Mirror contains the following notice of a concert given at that place in which the Davis family took a prominent part. It says:
The concert given by the Brazil Silver Cornet Band, and the Davis family, of Terre Haute, on last Saturday night was well attended. The music by the band was most excellent, and the singing by the Davis family superb. Especially is Mr. Dan Davis worthy of special mention, as he possesses a voice of superb sweetness, and was unquestionably, the star of the evening. The family was frequently encored throughout the performance, and every one present went away feeling that it was one of the most pleasant and enjoyable occasions they had ever attended. We were pleased to see so large an audience in attendance, as it shows the appreciation our citizens have for the#Brazil Silver Cornet Band We hope at an early day they may favor us with another feast of enjoyment similar to this.
