THE reason why medical practitioners do not hesitate to prescribe Dr. F. Wilhoft's Anti-Periodic or Fever and Ague Tonic, is as follows: Messrs. Wheelock, Finlay & Co., of New Orleans, its proprietors, have published its composition, and physicians have approved it because it contains no dangerous drug, and because it invariably proves successful. It is for sale by all druggists.

CAN PREACH GOOD. No man can do a good job of work preach a good sermon, try a law suit well, doctor a patient, or wrote a good article when he feels miserable and dull, with sluggish brain and unsteady nerves, and none should make the attempt in such a condition when it can be so easily and cheaply removed by a little Hop Bitters. THE TERRE HAUTE WEEKLY

MEMPHIS.

Its Present Condition—Business Booming but Yellow Fever not Dead.,

Letter From a Gazette «pondent.

MEMPHIS, TENN., Nov.

29,1870.

To the Editor of the GAZKTTK: Your correspondent reached Memphis last night, fifteen days behind time, and not any too late for yellow fever, a.s there are still plenty of cases lingering around the edges. To-day we have spent visiting old friends, and find many who but recently returned home from the North.

To have been a respectable citizen in Memphis this season was no security from a visit of the yellow fever agencies, as a large portion of the deaths were of the most respectable class, and called with all other classes, to hand in their checks, for a final, future settlement be yond the grave. To deny the present existence of yellow fever in Memphis is a wrong and an outrage upon the people who come here by invitations, as well as assurances by the' press of the city, that it is safe and there need be no fears of the fever in Memphis. We visited this city in

1873,

remained here a week, during

the ravages of the cholera were here when the death rate by that terrible scourge numbered its victims from forty to sixty per day and again we returned, the same season, at what was called the close of the yellow fever, and again, by special invitation, we came here Nov.

A. M.,

had reported to us, by a gentleman of standing in business circles, and a man of honor and integrity, that on yesterday, the

28th,

occurred in Memphis. Can the press of this city expect gentlemen to come here, through their influence, and find how the matter stands, and not send eut a note of warning ta distant friends who contem plate coming here at an early date? No warmer friend of the interests of Memphis have they in their city than the writer of this article, but the truth must out, pinch where it will, ana we repeat that the press of Memphis should bear these misrepresentations. And further, we can, from our own knowledge, furnish the Memphis press with the following tacts: That some of the recently returned Memjhians are sojourning with their friends in this city, fearing to go to their own homes on account of the present existence of yellow fever in their immediate vicinity. These reports grate hard upon the nerves of sensitive men from the North. Better, vea. tar better, give us the truth.

The business nouses are condensing their circle. Many blocks are almost deserted, save a few saloons or peanut venders, and yet with all these drawbacks there is not a more generous hearted people to be found any where. That trade in Memphis is booming at present, is beyond a doubt, and that Memphis is one of our very best business points in the South 16 beyond a question of doubt, but unfortunately either the location of the city is an unfortunate one, or, perhaps, it may be attributed to the unfortunate surroundings of the city and not to the city at all, or to both. The reader can make the application to suit himself. ?«•',"

THE EXODUS TO INDIANA. The Southern people seem to be full of the recent exodus to Indiana, especially the recent settlement at Green Castle, and seem to attribute these movements to the Republican party, in order to carry the state in the next Presidential election Though a Republican, the writer has, time and again, opposed the exodus movement. It is a dangerous movement, and woe to the party if they attempt to colonize negro votes by the exodus movement. The mechanic and the laboring man will never consent to this uncalled for competion against the white laborer. There is no class of mechanical labor in the North but what is represented among the exodus emigration. If the negro see6 fit to come into the tate of Indiana by his free will and choice, then we say It is his right, but if through political influences, then we predict the largest majority for the party opposing the Republican party that the 6tate has ever given. Yours, respectfully,

Stone,

This may certify that I have been a subject of that terrible disease. Catarrh ef the head and throat, for some 52 years, caused by taking cold In the month of Jure, 1825. The attack at that time waa so severe that tne doctor and my friends thought 1 must die. For years and years 1 hav« been so sick that life has becu a burden to myself and friends It ia naeleaa for me to say how many doctors 1 have tried, hew much mcdicine 1 have taken, during all tuese years of endless suffering, but those who suffer as I have suffered will know that 1 never oeased to look for relief, and to try every remedy that promised it.

In September, 1871, I began the ase of Sandtord's Radical Core for Catarrh. Mo sooner did I begin to use It than my symptoms changed. It cleaved nry threat, It cleared my head, it cleared my mind. It operated on my system in a Way that nothlnc ever before given me bt doctors had done.
