GENERAL AND PERSONAL. Mr. James Russell Lowell's house at Cambridge, Mass., has'been the winter by Mr. Ole Bull.
The manners of. mundane greatness are not always stately. It is related that Governor-elect Foster, of Ohio, called upon Governor Bishop the other day, and was greeted with a familiar "Why, hello, Charley!" Mr. Bishop showed exceeding pleasure, and straightway conducted Mr. Foster thrcugh the State Departments, telling him all he could think of about them. a,,
Curiously enough",' it happens that a preacher in Canandaigua is found to haye preached in June last the very sermon of Rev. Dr. Joseph Parker which Brother Lorimer, of Chicago, so liberally drew on a few Sundays ago. The Canandaigua preacher so greatly pleased his hearers that they asked a copy of the sermon for publication. Instead of telling them that it had been published before falling into his hands, he consented, and wrote. "I wish it was more deserving of the honor you confer upon it."
Mr. Sol. Smith Russell has severed his connection with the Berger family, and during the remainder of the season will be associated with Mr. William T. Adams ("Oliver Optic") in a novel entertainment, in which Mr. Adams will read some of his short original stories of domestic life, and Mr. Russell will give his delineations of eccentric character.

UTTER ABSENCE OF STRENGTH.
"A Washington City local paper has interviewed a few statesmen who are in town on the subject of the Grant movement. Hon. H. G. Davip, Senator from West Virginia, says that all this talk of Grant being able to crcate any enthusiasm in the South is the work of stalwarts, who hope In that way to create sentiment in his favor. Hon. Poindexter Dunn, of Arkansas, says it is a mere breeze in the tree tops nothing more. It i6 about on a par with Hayes' attempt to revive the Whig party in the South. Hon. C. B. Simonton says that the Grant movement in the South is confined to the state of Georgia. Senator Garland, of Arkansas, 6ays he doe6 not know anything of it. Congressman L. Davis, of Miasour says he knows nothing of it in his state. He says there may be a little of it in Georgia. Congressman JE. Ellis, of Louisiana, says the Southern Grant boom is a barren ideality. J. C. S. Bladkburn says it is a sublimely inspired, insane statement of a tew jackasses. Hon. Alexander H. iStephens had nothing to say about it. Judge Bright, of Tennessee, says he does not believe in it. He says that anything of the sort is simply experimental with a few people who are desperate and despairing of successes. General Eppa Huntoon, ol Virginia, says there is nothing in it. Congressman Manning, of Mississippi, says the idea of Grant carrying any of the Southern states, in case he is a candidate, which seems very probable, is mere bosh. Congressman Slemmons, of-'Arkansas, when asked What he" knew of the Grant movement in the' South, said "•There is none that I know ot, except the idle vaporingg of a few' fools and rascals." Congressman Mills of Texas, says "The Sotfth is not troubling itself about such silly Matters, and if there itji Grant movgfflfetit I kniw nothing a it." J. —.,7 .ar'«!»
